"That was before Oudin, whose coach still has her lay sod and tend to the landscaping at her tennis club in Marietta, Ga., harvested the seeds of upset planted on the court by Hewitt."
Ha, Nick B. should make the kids at his academy do this sort of thing. It might help them become almost human-like.

They showed a bit of Williamsx2 and stadium looked empty. Where are people? Were people with night session tickets allowed to enter the court? If so, why was it so empty?

When it comes to US TV contracts, Maria doesn't mean a thing. It's 100% thanks to the Williamz. They're an incredible story that can never be replicated. When they're done, it's going to be interesting to see how the ladies fight to keep equal money and such.
There was a discussion about this on TTC... USO is the only slam where Women's Tennis is even close to the same popularity as the Men's (AO was an anomaly this year with "their" Dokic). With the Williamz gone, it will return to the level of everywhere else. Then, consider that tennis is much, much less popular in the US these days. Dark days ahead.
And you mentioned the WNBA. It's a failure because it's too far below the quality of the men. People want to see dunks and athleticism. Looks can only carry you so far. It's not enough to get the average idiot to watch consistently for 2+ hours. I doubt Women's Tennis will get that bad... quality is difficult to compare, and DRAWMUH~ is another factor... but, how long can these weak-willed ninnies keep sucking, DFing 20 times a match, and looking to their boxes like children.
This is where Women's Tennis is in a tough spot.
We bitch that it's all Williamz, all the time. But, it should be. They always win.
They have to plant something for the day when Ree just up and quits.
And it worked that way with Ivanovic. She got more popular, treated like a top player, AFTER her short #1 reign ended, and started blowing.
So, I don't really have a point on this one. Women's Tennis is screwed for the time being.
No, I mean it. De Screamo is really good. What other young player has the groundies that she has? And she has all the confidence and people backing her that one needs.
As for hating her... her scream is much worse than anyone else's. And she's been a rotten brat, so far. And I generally dislike any player that's overhyped.
Tennis Channel will be around for a long time. They're doing very well now. There's lots of room for niche sports on 500 channel setups.
And, really, it wouldn't break my heart if ESPN never showed tennis again. As long as I can find it somewhere.
Also, Oudin played 100x better vs. Demented. But, she knocked out Maria, so we cool.
Ok, I'm done.

And you mentioned the WNBA. It's a failure because it's too far below the quality of the men. [...] I doubt Women's Tennis will get that bad... All I can say is...if you compare the two right now, the choice is astoundingly clear. I think there is as much of a schism in quality as there is in basketball. The WTA players are just a right mess currently. This is very true, but if the WTA goes in the shitter, it gets harder to justify and fund the channel. I actually don't think the WTA will die -- as long as bitchez want to win Wimbledon, there will be women's tennis. But the amount of tournaments, coverage, popularity will be drastically reduced unless something changes. I don't want this to turn into golf, where no one cares about the girls.

Boy, Isner is making Roddick look sad here...not only a better serve but more aggressive in the rallies as well. I'm sad for Andy. Isner was more bold and it paid off in the end. The me this was kind of like the Johansson/Roddick U.S. Open match a few years ago. That was another loss Andy should have won. Roddick is missing chances to take leads in matches. Andy had a routine passing shot at break point in the first set and didn't make it just the set point he had against Federer in the second set of their 2009 Wimbledon final. Andy butchered a routine volley on set point. he would have had a 2 set to none lead on Federer. Andy missed the volley and the rest is history.
