But Kimmie HATES clay!!! Remember? Luckily for her, everyone hates clay, except Safina, who will lose to her 0-6 0-6 in the final. I was wondering who that was in your avatar. It's the second Becky from the Roseanne" TV show. The question is why? Justine won't come back if she doesn't have the desire to work as hard as she did before. I can't see her coming back and coasting in training and in matches like so many WTA players do.

Venus' career has been pretty sad actually since 2001. Well, sad on a very high level. Dominated by younger sis, playing like crap in 90% of her matches, winning nothing. Except that one sucky tourney.

I'm not surprised the crowd wasn't behind Venus today, she was apathetic.
Race does play a role in all this, obviously, but it's just one of many factors. I think the main factor is that tennis fans who attend tennis tournaments are generally not fan of Venus and Serena.
Obviously, they ARE popular, we've just discussed that their retirement might mean the death of women's tennis in the US, but it's a popularity with people who don't attend tennis tournaments.

This is a bit random, but funny nonetheless: globoesporte.globo.com/Esportes/Noticias/Tenis/0,,MUL1294191-15090,00-GATA+DO+DIA+MELANIE+OUDIN.html The title translates as "Hottie of the Day". Captions of the first two photos: "Oudin's pretty green eyes are making an impression" "The beautiful American after winning an important point on her duel against Sharapova"

If Venus keeps playing for a few more years, the US crowds will finally embrace her as they did with Nav. No one here (in the US, not in Tennis Cult!) rooted for Nav during her normal-aged tennis years, despite the fact that she became a US citizen.
I have no idea what it would take for everyone to embrace Serena. But if she plays till 40, it could happen.

They aren't nearly as likable as James Blake and Chanda Rubin. It's the same with white tennis fans and white tennis players. Chris Evert was much more likable than Billie Jean King, Jimmy Connors or John McEnroe because they had nasty attitudes as players and they cursed alot on court while Chrissie had a nice attitude and was not demonstrative in any way.

Evert was quite demonstrative between the sheets, it turned out.

She was crying and crushed after that terribly unlucky loss to Austin. Along with that being the time where Martina started getting serious about her conditioning and being the greatest. All it takes is showing the crowd that you're human, along with winning. But, the Williams purposely hide that.

I think Vera looks quite fit apart from the bandages. By which I mean, her tits look smaller.

But even players who show no emotions become popular if they stick around a long enough time; people enjoy watching old people still functioning. Even Lendl started to win over the fans at the very end of his career. There are some really good points in this Bepa match now that Flav woke up. Yeah, Bepa's scampering around just fine despite looking like a mummy out there.
