Why are the commentators assuming Serena will get #1 "eventually" if she wins here? Is there a stagger issue? I really don't think it's a guarantee.

I think it's a stagger issue, when Dinara's Tokyo SF points come off. But Dinara blew all of last autumn, so if Serena fails to show then she may well get it back.
I guess Slams are officially An Issue for Murray! Which still doesn't make Hurley's point last week correct.

I guess Slams are officially An Issue for Murray! Which still doesn't make Hurley's point last week correct. Use your noodle, Alex. Don't be bias! </dawnmaree> Well. It seems that the issue is that, for whatever reason, Murray performs below his level at Slams and loses to players that he doesn't ordinarily lose to, rather than there always being someone who can play better than him (if that was the case, wouldn't he have similar results in non-Slam events?) I mean, he may not win a Slam if he doesn't resolve whatever issue this is. But it's to do with him. He's shown he has enough game to handle everyone else's game.

Yes, there's one week stagger between Tokyo this year.
Then, Dinara is down like 100 points for one week, then there's the 2 Asian Tier I's, including a mandatory in Beijing. Guess who will do better in those?!

And to pre-empt the "we're only talking about Slam results" argument...ATP players don't turn up to Slams and turn into different players when it comes to their basic physical game. Masters results and the head-to-heads therein tend to be good predictors of Slam results.

Seriously. Yes, obviously there is a disparity there, so your argument should be "Murray will never win a Slam if he doesn't resolve whatever prevents him from playing in Slams like he does outside them," rather than "Murray will never win a Slam because others, at their best, are just better than him."

Oh my God. He can't beat seven guys. He just can't. Someone will get him. He has 1 or 2 less bullets to dodge in Masters Series events. Hell, he can pull off six in a row. He has on numerous occasions, even at the US Open. Unfortunately... END.

Pam can be irritating, but she's easily the most knowledgeable tennis mind at ESPN. Umm ... yeah, sure. For women's tennis, she is. She's been perceptive on many things. She was the only person alive that didn't think Hingis would win 100 career slams in '97. She loves Justine. She's the only one that's not on Maria's teat since her comeback. I'll concede that she's goofy concerning the Sistahz, though.
