How do you stop your sport for 3 1/2 years and come back and jump like that? Plus, the judges are too in awe to notice the lackluster footwork stuff. Am going to have to DVR this tonight, after missing the pairs last night. Jacobellis, yikes.

Cancelled for the day. So far, at least. I believe this is all Lindsey Vonn's doing. She must have made a deal with the devil to keep postponing races until her injury is healed. Ah! Just like Serena, fatally injured at Wimbledon, writhing on the ground -- and then right on cue, The Rains Came. Seems to be a USian specialty!

I might stay up just to see if Mary Carillo will do a Feature lauding Tim Horton's doughnuts.

That sucky blond Canadian is hot. And the next skater is Plushy, the...well, I was going to say he's the least attractive man in figure skating, but he has some fierce competition. Oh, Jacobellis. I had to look at the spoiler. Sheesh. You got Kwaned.

I'd give anything for some Timmy Ho's coffee right now.
Yeah, Plushenko is really good. I didn't know he took off 3.5 years. It's not right that a man is that flexible.

He's not as flexible as this guy! This guy looked great! What fun that was. Sorry about the spoiler, Hurley.

Sorry about the spoiler, Hurley. It really wasn't a spoiler...I could have avoided it, but I had to know. Oh Joubert. You got Browninged. Great wasted career.

Am going to have to DVR this tonight, after missing the pairs last night. Jacobellis, yikes. As I said prior to the competition - Plushy merely needs to show up and fart at the judges a few times and he wins. He flaps his arms a few times and shakes his mullet, and it passes as artistry. He can be artistic, as he's shown in exhibition, but he doesn't seem to bother in competiton. And well, why should he. He's technically the best, and the best competitor. Even though I don't like him and never have, it's clear that he's simply the best out there. 3.5 years off or not.

Janie, did you see Joubert? I hear he was terrible, but at least he has his looks to fall back on. To be honest, I expected bronze from him, at best. He hasn't been great since coming back from surgery, and Plushy existing seems to pysch him out.
Browning was a better skater than Joubert. Browning never winning an Olympic medal was far worse, IMO.

I got to see Lycsacek while I was at the bank. Good performance from him. I'm not sure it was always the case, but he's turned into a very good competitor. I expect a medal performance from him tomorrow or whenever the long program is.

No, I went to bed before his turn, but recorded it to watch today. I really want Plushenko not to win gold, but I do like watching him soar. Other than that, he's:P. My favorite skater was the guy who failed to do a triple axel and also messed up his double jump, but had GREAT, GREAT spins and footwork stuff, the stuff Plushenko the Arrogant can't be bothered with.

Where was the dude from? What did he look like? I like to see guys who can actually skate. I hate when they fall, but the stuff in between matters, too. I miss Buttle. His transitions, footwork, and and all that blah made up for the fact that he fell a lot.

I had to look it up, but it was this Swiss guy; I found these notes on some blog: Stephane Lambiel (Switzerland, Music: William Tell Overture): I'm excited for this - the crowd will surely get into it. Aw, so cute as the flag-bearer. hate those nagging groin injuries. This is an ambitious program. Double axel...nice but so easy. Loses point potential. Quad toe - oohh...he really stopped the fall, so I'm impressed, but then doubled the toe off of it. Augh. Finished his last triple fine though. Hopefully he rack up the points with the rest of this program. Great spins of course. ANd this footwork is so fun. Another perfect spin from Lambiel. 84.63. Still a very very good score...there's still a chance for him. That score is a little bit high for me.
The William Tell Overture made the fast parts of his skate extra exciting, and he was actually skating to the music, unlike most skaters. The crowd was jazzed.

Ah, yes. Lambiel. He's another one that retired and then came back for the Olympics. I wouldn't mind if he medaled. Yes, he can actually put in a performance. At his best, he had the jumps, too.

The point of that, is that of last year's World medalists, Evan is likely the only one who will stand on the podium again. Good for him. Chan is still in contention for bronze, technically, but I don't see it. I'll probably root for Weir over him, anyway.

Plushenko is obviously the best jumper. So, it's fine that the judges decide he should win? I guess I'm not elitist enough with figure skating to understand.

Joubert once said that Plushy is a huge dick in press conferences, but is actually decent off camera. Which is... backwards from what is expected, but whatever. I'm obviously paraphrasing anyway; it's something that I read ages ago, from a source I've long forgotten. Take it with a grain of salt.
Whatever. I dont care for Plush as a skater, never have. But he's technically the best, and that press conference was hilarious. So, win. I'm okay with it this time. Also, he's not entirely wrong. That so few of the men put in the effort to master the quad these days is dissapointing. It shouldn't necessarily be each skater's priority, but it shouldn't be ignored, either.

Coming back from such a long absence and immediately, casually, dominating, Plushenko reminds me of Serena. Supremely talented, puts in the least possible effort to still win. But he's funnier. True, we haven't seen him in a PC after a loss, but somehow I don't think he'd be anything like our surly "lucky shots" queen. Still hope he falls down, though. On his head.

Janie, did you see Joubert? I hear he was terrible, but at least he has his looks to fall back on. Just saw him, and it was sad, terrible. "Disastrous", "painful to watch", said the commentators. He messed up the jumps and then he just gave up, skating slowly, totally out of rhythm with the jaunty music, just a mess. To my eye, he did pick it up toward the end and finally looked okay, but what a shame.

We get to see that on NBC later tonight. NBC wouldn't want to endanger the health of our obese, sedentary USian selves by allowing us to see an exciting sport LIVE. Bring me a big platter of Canadian bacon, poutine, and Tim Horton doughnuts so I can get in the Canadian spirit, then let me watch my pre-digested ski races!
