There is immense Twitter tragedy unfolding here: It started out as a joke to pass the time, but Serena Williams says she’s planning to force Andy Murray to sing karaoke at Wimbledon. During a day of incessant rain in England on Sunday at the Queen’s club tournament, Murray asked his Twitter followers what the players could do to entertain the fans, suggesting “Karaoke would be great!!?” Serena, who was being kept off the practice court at Eastbourne, revealed she had a portable karaoke machine with her. She encouraged Murray to join her in a singing session. “omg I LOVE karaoke!!! Let’s do it on rain delays! What’s your go to song?? I’m in!!!!!! Let’s go! ” she tweeted. And after winning her opening match at Eastbourne on Tuesday, Williams was still keen, promising: “We’ll do it at Wimbledon. I’ll bring it and I’ll force him to sing.” Murray said his song of choice would be REM’s “Losing My Religion.” Williams went for “Straight Outta Compton” by NWA.

Actually, it's hard to know what to bold there. It's all so great.

I thought the Bartoli account was outed as fake quite early on.

I mean, before the cake-eating and sharting chat, it at least was...regular.

I've never followed it - I think one of the first tweets was something quite boastful about money, which was a bit of a warning sign. Think some of the tennis journalists confirmed it was fake during Wim.

I need to stop following Serena. Every time I see a tweet from her, I just want to smack her face in. What an intolerable, sophomoric twit.

Then stop! That would drive me nuts. I see enough teenage mentality on TF without having it dished out to me from the permanently-17-year-old Serena.

Think I'm gonna have to stop following her. I do not need every article they post about gay rights / guns RTd. Thanks.

Yeah, I stopped following her a long time ago. She was going on and on about the horror of some missed line call or something at the time. I even tweeted back: enough already, Martina, we get it. I have absolute zero tolerance on Twitter for annoying tweets because, why let them enter my world? So I regularly drop folks even if they're 80% fun to follow. I could care less that I'm missing a lot of good stuff. Speaking of Twitter, I think Rebecca Marino will find that if she closes her Twitter account, within one day she won't even think about the harrassing posts any more. I hope she has closed it by now and I am impressed that Robson was able to do it, since it's probably not easy for someone that age to just bow out.

She had done it for days before her retirement announcement, and had been off Twitter during the entirety of her hiatus. So she can't stop thinking about them, and in all likelihood never would be able to.
But social media is rapidly becoming the "real world" for people that age, or at least a chunk of it. Like any new society, there is going to be chaos before rules and morals are established.

Robson was back on within 24 hours of deleting hers.
The problem isn't that people start thinking social media "is" the real world, but social media and the "real" world bleed into each other so that you can't ignore it.
To follow on from the other thread (WHY are we having this discussion over two threads at the same time, aargh): for most celebrities, your agent is just going to tell you to get on Twitter and build your brand. It's de rigueur these days.
