The problem isn't that people start thinking social media "is" the real world, but social media and the "real" world bleed into each other so that you can't ignore it. I agree, that is kind of what I meant, but I am just pounding out shit in 900 windows all day err day these days.

Perhaps it might sound paradoxical, but I think players like Marino are in a worse position when it comes to social media pressure than bona fide superstars. Say, Sharapova or Serena can easily filter all the information that comes to them from the outside and create a parallel universe where they're the greatest thing ever. On the other hand, a player ranked #59 is not that much different from any other person doing a regular everyday job, but yet she's somehow "known" to the world and accessible to all kinds of people all around. I guess there must be at least some kind of normal curiosity about what people think of you, but in combination with certain personality traits it can be quite dangerous.
I believe it will be a growing problem for the tour. And not just them.

That's totally true.
Plus, I imagine for Serena and Ma$ha, the adoring fan tweets massively outweigh the nasty ones. But the block button is your friend on Twitter.

When I read the NYTimes article, I knew Marino was dealing with far deeper issues than some random Tweets directed at her. It turned out she's battling depression for many years.
I don't want to minimize the problem, but when you're busy enough travelling the world on the pro tour, that kind of shit, as unpleasant as it might be at first when you read, isn't going to affect you unless you are already dealing with bigger problems.

Well, I think it would affect a sensitive young person, just not to this extent. In the medical world they use the term WNL = within normal limits. Some reaction, at least until you'd get used to it, would surely be normal, but Rebecca's reaction was not WNL.
You need solid people around you who will try to put this sort of thing in perspective for you. It's sad that the people around Rebecca either didn't notice or were unable to help her, because if she's overreacting to this, surely she was responding in an unhealthy way to other things in her world. Couldn't anyone see it?
But for all I know she was traveling alone, in which case it's easy to imagine that it could all get away from her. Or else she could have been putting on a false front of cheer that fooled everyone.

Blaz Kavcic's twitter might be worth following if you are into exhibitionist tennis players posting nude pics of themselves.

www.tennisalternative.com/ten...ce-rn2349.htmlTennisSpinster: Alize Lim puts Maria Sharapova in her place The pretty Frenchwoman Alize Lim, whose pictures got a lot of attention on TA during the Roland Garros qualifying, called on Maria Sharapova on Twitter. Sharapova tweeted: "I think I need to watch more #rolandgarros tennis. Yesterday, had no clue who Paire was, today Chardy?I need to step up my tennis knowledge!" That's actually a very strange thing to say, as these two are close in the ranking to her official now boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov. That's why many Twitter users didn't believe it could be for real. Then again, if someone lives in the world of most exclusive circle and doesn't look down, then why not? Alize Lim took it for real and delivered a screencap of the current ranking. @mariasharapova and yet looks like you should... The best part comes now - Alize used to date Benoit Paire (also Antoine Benneteau, Julien's brother), now she's seen with Jeremy Chardy. "My boyfriends are better than yours." WTA has just got even more interesting... Okay so SEWTA is not interesting but how has she never heard of Paire or Chardy?

Oh LOL we're talking about it here. My thoughts: Yesterday Maria tweeted that she didn't know who Paire and Chardy were and that she needs to "brush up" on her ATP. To me, it read as a joke/comment on their looks, but who knows. Anyway then Alize Lim (who dates Chardy) replied with an awesome jpg of the rankings which show Paire and Chardy both immediately directly ahead of (dun dun dun) Dimitrov. It was pretty LULZ. So today this person tweeted Kim asking if she knew who Paire and Chardy were (LOL) and she replied "of course...why?" She probably had no idea what was going on but it was still funny. I agree but (as Leena has said) Maria probably doesn't even do her own tweets anyway. I still think "she" knows who they are, was posting that as a "joke" about how good-looking they are, and will say as much in the press conference today when she is inevitably asked about it.

I agree it was a strange thing to say, but....what has this got to do with anything? I doubt a lot of the top players analyse the rankings of lesser peasants on their own tours. So whatevz. Funny though.

Most players don't even know who's in their own current top 5, as was proven.

The outcome I'm taking from this is that Alizé Lim is my new favourite player.
The big giveaway that Ma$ha doesn't do her own tweets is "her" immaculate spelling and grammar.

I like how Beyoncé's communiques to the world come primarily in the form of photos of handwritten Post-it notes.
