I don't care if it makes me ~RAYCIST~, but that vuvushit really needs BANNED. Not only it sound horrendous, which it does, who the hell thought it would be even remotely fun to make exactly the same sound over and over and over again for 90 minutes?

We have a soccer thread!! But I guess this event should have a different one. Kinda thought GRE would play better, but KOR looks strong. If ARG is sloppy, this group could get interesting. The only time USA will ever care about soccer starts in < 6 hours.

I watched some of the RSA/MEX game and was reminded why I hate soccer. No scoring. The crowd just blowing horns which got annoying after a second.
Goooo USA. Then, lose by a 100 to ALG and SLO.

NGA is possibly the most unfortunate country code ever.

I want to watch, but my mother is instead watching a horrible made-for-tv movie. There are lots of dead people in it, though, so it's not a total loss.
I'm rooting for S Korea and then whichever team I decide is the hottest. Spain is my default at the moment, but I imagine they're not hot anymore and will quickly find another.
I guess I could also root for the USA, seeing as Canada sucks too hard to have a team so this is the closest that we have (somewhere, 29 999 999 Canadians just screamed "omgwernotlikamurkians!!!lulz!!", while eating McD's, drinking Coke, and checking some American based websites).

Most everyone I know (including myself) cheered for the USA today. That's never happened before, in any sport.

ENG should have won this thing like 3-0. Unfortunate for y'all. Cornerstone Grill and Loft in College Park, MD is still reverberating.

The USians actually played about even with ENG. Which is concerning. They can't have any chance of winning. Hopefully they'll suck vs. SLO.

I would say that each team finished a goal away from where they should have finished that scoreline due to their respective keepers...albeit in opposite directions.

LOL. Another classic jpg.
Vuvuzelagate is...possibly ~RAYCIST~!!!1, or at least a sign that ethnocentrism is alive and well. Just turn on the Cameron Crazies and you'll see behavior which is just as constantly loud (and obnoxious) </Terpaholic>, but we are accustomed to those particular sounds. Since this is EEK DIFFERENT, it's off-putting.

The problem with vuvushit is that it takes away much of what makes football. Fans singing, crowd chanting, ooohs and aaahs after a good scoring opportunity, noise getting lowder as the tempo of the game increases, etc. It's just GONE and all you hear is a gigantic swarm of invisible bees buzzing. Not everything is ~RAYCISM~.

The difference with the college basketball crowds is that they're making noise to disturb their opponent. The South Africans play the horn every second, no matter who is playing or what's happening.

Those damn horns going every second are making not want to watch soccer again. And, I mean...this is the thing. Hate vuvzelas, fine, but as Edna said, this is atypical. Don't hate soccer because of it. However, is it? The problem with vuvushit is that it takes away much of what makes football. Fans singing, crowd chanting, ooohs and aaahs after a good scoring opportunity, noise getting lowder as the tempo of the game increases, etc. It's just GONE and all you hear is a gigantic swarm of invisible bees buzzing. Not everything is ~RAYCISM~. It's NOT atypical, I'm assuming, during African soccer games. Is it? So we Americans/Europeans are experiencing it hardcore for the first time. So, unless I'm wrong, and I could very well be, these ARE what soccer sounds are to Africans. So we shouldn't impose our structures onto that. That's ethnocentrism. And sometimes I agree with the ethnocentric perspective, depending upon what it is, but that doesn't make it, you know, not. And as you know, I'm not trying to start a fight, I just like positing the sociological devil's advocate's position because I'm not good at anything else. I think you all know that but lately I feel like I have to add disclaimers here.

This reminds of when the Chinese government thought that they had to teach their people to cheer properly prior to the Olympic Games. The horn shit here doesn't bother me, btw. Also, I haven't been able to watch any football yet. Possibly related points, there.

But, I only watch soccer every 4 years. You can't screw it up.
Yeah. As long as it's not bothering the players, it is what it is. It's like Maria Sharapova screaming like Sasha Grey. She can because the public tolerates it. That doesn't mean I can't call it stupid and refuse to watch because of it.
