Interesting stuff! Thanks, Boreas. It's hard to believe Fichman only just turned 21. Seems like I've been seeing her name forever.

Didn't Fichman's dad say a few years ago that if she didn't make the top 100 by 18, they'd move on from tennis? I guess they changed their minds.

Fichman's been in top 100 for more than a year as far as doubles concerned, so maybe that counted in her favor. Of course Marino is by far the best Canadian girl at the moment, I'd say she has more talent than Wozniak whom I never found particularly gifted, never did I even saw her play a good match, so that might be the reason. I expected to see a good player, so she wasn't too much of a revelation to me. Fichman on the other hand proved to be way above her current ranking at 230 or so. At her height she never will be a top player, but I can picture a "Llagostera Vives" kind of career. Establishing herself as a capable doubles player somewhere in the top 40 and, with some lapses of form, a player that could range between places 50 and 150 in singles. Her backhand is quite powerful and precise, with forehand she can't do more than spin or loop it back, but that can work in her favor when playing on clay. Her net game is not questionable and she doesn't make many unforced errors. The serve, even if not strong, is accurate and reliable. With that positive, feisty, never giving up attitude, I'm sure she can have a nice career. Losing to Tatishvili 1 and 1 in Dothan of course puts my theories under a questionmark.

You're welcome. I realize that everyone on this board probably knows more about the Canadians than I do, but hey, just giving my 2 cents about the girls I never, or barely, saw before. ;D

Kvitova battled past Kuz, so it's 2-1 in favor of Not-Russia ... come on, Lucie!

Good job CZE... Watching the Kvitty-Kuzzy match now. Wish Sweater could be good all the time.

But then she wouldn't be Sweater. She'd be some hypothetical good-all-the-time player. This also seems to highlight the huge gulf between and her compatriots. The Czechs have lots of players in the top 100, but only one of them is world class apparently.
