I was waiting for this thread! Talk about waiting until the last minute. I didn't realize that Italy drew Australia ... that's a tough first round for the defending champs. Stosur/Groth can win that. I think it isn't entirely crazy that Mattek Sands can beat Wickmayer to start off. And she did also take Clijsters to the wall in Canada on hard court last year. But there's no chance of that upset, is there? It would be very funny if Russia loses to France.

I think the lower levels have already played but I haven't found a page that just lists results. But I think UZB beat China!

Bitchmayer beat Mattek-Socks 6-1 7-6. BMS had set point at 5-4 and was up 5-2 in the TB.

And La Razz routined Sharapova, France leads 2-0 Franny rebounded from the loss to Grothosova to edge Stosur, who lost both singles rubbers Maggie Maleeva has been playing doubles for Bulgaria and is 3-0 so far! Sadly, two of the wins came with BUL already eliminated.

Maleeva is back in doubles!?!
The Russian results are so awesome. They still might win the tie, though. Cornet turned her ankle late in her win over Sveta. Will she come back out tomorrow?
Serbia-Canada is 1-1. Marino got Canada's point but she just barely edged Krunic (who?) in 3.
Italy has put out Australia 3-1. Pennetta avenged Schiavone's defeat against Groth by routining her 3 and 2. Gee, this Italian team might just do it again.

A-Pav won and Kuz is on her way to beating Razz, so it looks like the doubles will decide it.

And the doubles did decide it. For Russia, unfortunately. A-Pav and Safina winning 7-6 6-0 over Coin and Parmentier (why these two?). France came one set short. The magic ran out just shy of the finish line.
The USA is being whitewashed by Belgium but let's give Mattek-Sands some credit for winning the first set against Clijsters in an epic 12-10 tiebreak! Too bad that only made Kim mad and she won the last two sets 6-2 6-1.
Canada v. Serbia will be decided by the doubles.

Canada v. Serbia will be decided by the doubles. And it was a crazy entertaining match. Aleksandra Krunic was fantastic and she's such a cute little thing. Awww!

There's something so distasteful about US-dwelling Sharapova's über- "faux patriotic" remarks: "We are going to go out and fight. We never give up and that's not what our country is known for, and we are going to go out there and battle for what is ours," said Sharapova. Too bad she got left out of the crucial final matches! But at least "we" won, right, Mashka?

The Fed Cup PC was annoying. Masha (and I don't blame her) giggled her way through it only like someone who's used to always being the centre of attention can. She got 4 microphones to herself and the other 3 girls and Tarpishev got like 2 among all of them. Dinara was drawing quietly at the side and Sveta had to be ordered to give an answer. No pretence at all of the other girls being anything more than the Latoya and Latavia Jacksons of this girl group.

Well done Ma. jose for the heroic performance vs EST. How about that BoJo, winning all 3 points in the squeaker over Canada (7-6(5) 6-4 in the doubles) K-Bond turned the same trick to lead UKR over

Zones, Group 1: EuropeAdvancing to the WG playoffs out of Europe: Belarus (Azarenka & Govortsova) def. Poland 2-0. The key there was Azza beating A-Rad 5 & 5. Switzerland (Schnyder & Baczinszky) def. Netherlands 2-1. Timea was actually the heroine since she beat Kraj whils Batty was routined by Rus. They won the deciding doubles, 5 & 2. Denmark was relegated as Wozniacki couldn't make up for the lack of talented teammates. Latvia was the other nation relegated. AmericasArgies were promoted (Dulko, Molinero, Irigoyen) Mexico and Chile relegated. BOL avoided relegation, well done MFAT and the Deheza twins! AsiaJapan is promoted with a 3-0 win over UZB. Relegated: India. "Sania Mirza, who won two of her three singles matches despite a hamstring problem, did not take field on Saturday and both Ashvarya Srivastava and Poojashree Venkatesha lost their singles matches"

That's sad, though. How long can they go on relying on Yayuk to bail them out? They need to support their young players better.

Masha should have been made to stand in the corner with a dunce cap on since she almost ruined it for "her country".

At least Masha had the good sense not to dress like she was attending a funeral. She actually doesn't look terrible there, which is amazing.
Anyway, if I can get tickets, I might actually go to a day of Fed Cup. I really have absolutely nothing better to do.
