And people wonder why no one cares about Fed Cup? What's next; countries will be mining 10K land and the under-12s to fill out teams?

Finally Eraydin does something above 10K level! Albeit via a Panova ret. Good to see Sasnovich beat Minella in Poitiers Shocking from FSG as top seed though. Surprise SFist in the Bendigo "50K": long-forgotten Lertcheewakarn

Good for Lurch! Glad to see it's not just Falconi benefitting from this silly Aussie "50Ks" There's another one coming up next week for the opportunists to feast on.

Lewrtcheewakarn has fallen so low that she's now a surprise semifinalist of an Aussie challenger. And we know that basically anyone with a ranking can reach a SF down there, lol.

I know. I looked at next week's entry list and saw that even the original bagel girl Brie Whitehead, at her highest ranking, would have had DE into the MD! It reaches into the 600s. What a shock for these players when they go from SF at an Aussie 50K to not getting out of qualies at a good 25K.

What's funny is that Lertcheewakarn emerged from the quarter headed by...Olivia Rogowska, R1 loser in even an AUS 50K Both TURs lost their Herzlia SFs

Yes, Herzlia has let us down. Meanwhile, in the Florence, SC, USA 25K, 2 surprise SFists will face off against 2 Hidden World veterans. Please let's not have an AT vs MB final: Asia Muhammad (USA) d. (Q)Kateryna Yergina (UKR) 75 63 (4)Anna Tatishvili (GEO) d. (6)Catalina Castano (COL) 62 60 (3)Madison Brengle (USA) d. (Q)Christina Makarova (USA) 62 Ret. Adriana Perez (VEN) d. LMAO, MLDB can't stop flopping in these US ITFs. Great run from young Sasnovich and much-needed points for Watson and Arvidsson, it's weird seeing them so far out of the top 100 and fighting to make the AO MD. Saguenay 50K QFs(1)Timea Babos (HUN) d. Jessica Pegula (USA) 75 63 (7)Ons Jabeur (TUN) d. Marta Domachowska (POL) 76(4) 26 63 (3)Melanie Oudin (USA) d. (wc)Francoise Abanda (CAN) 76(5) 60 (2)Coco Vandeweghe (USA) d. (6)Alize Lim (FRA) 64 63 Ugh, that second SF, worst thing ever. Hamamatsu 25K SFs(7)Shuko Aoyama (JPN) d. (1)Zarina Diyas (KAZ) 46 64 60 (2)Eri Hozumi (JPN) d. (4)Belinda Bencic (SUI) 64 64 I have a feeling Bencic aimed to come out from these weak 25Ks with at least a title Lertcheewakarn is in the AUS 50K FINAL She'll probably lose to Dellacqua though.

Very happy for Nok! A little happy for Casey, too.
Hoping for Ons-Oudin final in CAN.
Aww, Zarina's run out of steam. And to be fair, Bencic has done pretty well over there for a 16-year-old in this era of 18-year-olds unashamedly playing juniors. If she'd taken the easy route and gone to Australia like Falconi did, she'd have snagged some titles for sure.

In the big challenger event in France, Arvidsson faces Sasnovich in the final.
I watched most of Sasnovich vs Cadantu as I got bored with Serena's antics, and was very impressed with Sasnovich. Considering her results aren't that impressive, I was surprised at her ball-striking ability, she was hitting winners for fun at times (probably helped by playing on a reasonably quick court that was indoors), but she actually reminded me of Barthel, particularly her BH. She's got a lot to work on, for example, she's a tall girl and her serve isn't that big and her movement looked rather ungainly, but she's got potential if she works hard.

Thanks for the Sasnovich report! More Barthels would be a great thing, but only if they were better fighters than she is, of course. It's not nice to feel glee at another's misfortune, but I had to laugh at this Lagos final: Gioia Barbieri (ITA) d. (2)Nina Bratchikova (RUS) 36 63 30 Ret. Other news: *Dellacqua won Bendigo. *Shuko Aoyama beat Hozumi to win Hamamatsu. *Ons will face Coco in the Saguenay final. Onward, Ons! *The Florence SFs went the wrong way. *Taylor Townsend returns to action this week in a Texas 50K, entering the MD via Junior Exempt status. Hope she can at least win one match.

Sasnovich sounds promising. Looking at her results, she really does seem like a force on fast surfaces. Good draw to keep it going in next week's Nantes 50K if she's not tired:
(1)Monica Niculescu (ROU) v Nastassja Burnett (ITA) Amandine Hesse (FRA) v Q/LL Myrtille Georges (FRA) v Paula Cristina Goncalves (BRA) (5)Nadiya Kichenok (UKR) v Viktorija Golubic (SUI)
(4)Lara Arruabarrena (ESP) v Q/LL (wc)Michaella Krajicek (NED) v Q/LL Aliaksandra Sasnovich (BLR) v (wc)Leolia Jeanjean (FRA) (7)Sesil Karatantcheva (KAZ) v Lyudmyla Kichenok (UKR)
(8)Sofia Arvidsson (SWE) v Magda Linette (POL) Richel Hogenkamp (NED) v Daniela Seguel (CHI) Irina Ramialison (FRA) v Alexandra Dulgheru (ROU) (3)Yulia Putintseva (KAZ) v (wc)Kinnie Laisne (FRA)
(6)Claire Feuerstein (FRA) v Valeria Savinykh (RUS) Q/LL v Q/LL Pauline Parmentier (FRA) v Lucie Hradecka (CZE) (9)Stephanie Foretz Gacon (FRA) v (wc)Audrey Albie (FRA)
Some interesting names in the Taipei 50K, too, though why this is up against the 125K in Nanjing is anyone's guess.
(1)Kurumi Nara (JPN) v Yi-Jing Zhao (CHN) Mari Tanaka (JPN) v Valeria Solovyeva (RUS) (wc)Hao-Ching Chan (TPE) v Lesley Kerkhove (NED) (8)Zarina Diyas (KAZ) v (Q)Ho Ching Wu (HKG)
(4)Alison Van Uytvanck (BEL) v (Q)Kotomi Takahata (JPN) Erika Takao (JPN) v Ling Zhang (HKG) Pei-Chi Lee (TPE) v (wc)Hua-Chen Lee (TPE) (7)Ekaterina Bychkova (RUS) v (Q)Aki Yamasoto (JPN)
(5)An-Sophie Mestach (BEL) v Misa Eguchi (JPN) (wc)Ching-Wen Hsu (TPE) v Yung-Jan Chan (TPE) Zi Yang (CHN) v Ya-Hsuan Lee (TPE) (3)Luksika Kumkhum (THA) v Gioia Barbieri (ITA)
(6)Arantxa Rus (NED) v (Q)Katherine Ip (HKG) Ankita Raina (IND) v Wen-Hsin Hsu (TPE) Paula Kania (POL) v (wc)Ting-Fei Juan (TPE) (2)Dinah Pfizenmaier (GER) v Chin-Wei Chan (TPE)

Sasnovich is toying with Arvidsson. Very controlled agression, moving Arvidsson around and killing all the short balls. Arvidsson looks plain generic and I can't see how can she have so much better results indoors.

And Sasnovich won the title. Arvidsson's never been very good but she's still experienced, happy indoors and coming back into form - impressive run from Sasnovich in one of the strongest ITFs of the year.

Did anyone ever find out what Putintseva's injury was? She's already so limited physically, any impairment would be pretty fatal for her game.

Did anyone ever find out what Putintseva's injury was? She's already so limited physically, any impairment would be pretty fatal for her game. Her WTA profile says she withdrew from the US Open with a back injury. It did seem quite sudden how she disappeared and is now 0-4 since she came back, only winning one set in the process - will fall out of Top 100 next week as well.

Wow, there are so many big ITFs this week. Can't be bothered to c/p draws so notable players: Barnstaple 75K- Top two seeds are Beck and Riske slumming it, don't think they need to be here when they're in the top 60 - Watson (6) and Paszek (unseeded) continuing their comebacks - 17-year-old Katerina Siniakova has an easy opener vs South, and Dolonc in R2 is winnable too. Siniakova's AO qualy spot is almost secure... Taipei 50K- Luksika lost to last week's Lagos champ, Barbieri. Noooooooo - R1 wins for Diyas, Nara, Van Uytvanck and, attempting to rebuild her ranking (261), Latisha Chan Toronto 50K- Jabeur in the same Q as top seed Babos, who she beat last week - Pleasingly tough draw for Oudin: Domachowska in R1, potentially Abanda in R2 - Tough opener for Duval in Dabrowski, especially if she's not over her megachoke last week New Braunfels 50K- Ooh, hopefully MLDB's lamentable form continues in R1 against young Naomi Osaka - Crawford gets a tough draw in Marcela Zacarias on top of her inability to win matches lately - Townsend gets a WC, and Marand in R1 - winner probably gets Vandeweghe in R2. Would be amazing if TT came through, not holding out hope though Bendigo 50K- side-eye at the irrelevant scrubs here Istanbul 25K- With home girls Buyukakcay (top seed) and Ozgen (8th seed); the latter gets Smitkova, seeking to consolidate her LUX breakthrough, in R2 - Unfortunate draw for Eraydin in 2nd seed Pervak - Abduraimova is 7th seed but gets Jani in R1 - 17-year-old Elizaveta Kulichkova, whose already won a 25K and made a 50K final in Istanbul this year, qualifies and gets Dinu in R1

Good for both! Most excitingly, Naomi Osaka - just two weeks past her 16th birthday - beat MLDB 6-1 2-6 6-3 Her biggest win yet. Townsend, on the other hand, lost to Marand 6-4 2-6 3-6. She has just not transitioned to the seniors well at all, she has a record of 5-12 this year and although three of those wins came at big-point events, none are actually that impressive: Savinykh, Hradecka, Evtimova, Birnerova, Murray. Three of those spent 2013 in slumps of death and the other two are barely relevant even by ITF journeywomen standards. Townsend has a lot to prove...
