Post by lexpretend on Aug 31, 2011 15:12:02 GMT -5
Well, Venus won't play for the rest of the year now...let's face it, she hasn't played much earlier in the year either. I wouldn't be surprised if This Is It. Hold out to the Olympics or not? Or with her ranking out of the top 100 and her being unable to stay healthy for more than a match at a time, does she get a choice about that.

WHAT??? Oh no! Poor Vee! I wonder what's wrong with her? Nobody knows, but a few of the bloggers on Twitter were hinting that she had no chance this USO. And are now thinking retirement is imminent. Must be bad, whatever it is. She looked fine against Donuts, though.

Venus will get into the Olympics if she wants to play the Olympics. That's not even a question. Sleep with one eye open, Vania.

Karlovic/Moser (huh?) took the first set off the Bryans. That would be Franky Moser, out of Baden-Baden, who I'm amazed to see is 34yo.

This is really upsetting. I'm genuinely disappointed that Venus had to withdraw. I hope she gets her health back for one last deep run at Wimbledon and the Olympics.

Q. Was it a cold kind of illness? And energy sucking illness?
VENUS WILLIAMS: Yeah, it was just energy sucking and I just couldn't play pro tennis. It was disappointing, because I had huge plans for this summer, of course, to improve my ranking. To miss out on all those points was definitely devastating. Just to miss so much time off tour was just disheartening. But I'm just really excited to be back.
Q. Was there an official diagnosis or a name for it?
VENUS WILLIAMS: Yeah, there was.
Q. Which is?
VENUS WILLIAMS: It's outside of the press room, that name. But it's good to be here.
Q. If this were any other tournament but a major would you be here?
VENUS WILLIAMS: At this point I'd be at the 50,000 challenger where I live at. I'd be at any tournament that I could play. I just want to play tennis. It doesn't matter what the tournament is, I just want to play. Obviously the Open is huge, but I just want to play.

Hearing people going "Coco, Coco" at Vandeweghe's match and wondering why on earth would anyone change such a pretty name as Colleen into something weird and stupid like "CoCo".
The service motion of "CoCo" is glorious, too bad about everything else. I like her nonetheless, also because nobody else seems to.

I guess in Anglo countries, Colleen signifies kinda old-fashioned/rural/square. It's a very Irish name. Coco is "young" and "hott" and "fun" and whatever. I agree it's stupid.

I enjoy this part, watching the scrubs battling, seeing if someone new might come through or some wily veteran might make an amazing last run. But my MO is always to watch the whole event without ever setting eyes on either Screechbot or Baby Sister W.

Jack Sock looks like he has a decent all-court game. Impressing me more than Harrison did.
