I want to believe Shitra has a chance, but... 0-5 record for Errani against Stosur, so naturally she'll probably win. I was going to ask about final H2Hs but I'll wait until noon tomorrow, I guess.

No, Errani won't win. Samantha will play like a man and that will work!
Maria winning this is too horrible. That means it shall be Shitra who wins tomorrow.

I was going to ask about final H2Hs but I'll wait until noon tomorrow, I guess. Jumping ahead, the Sharapova-Stosur H2H is famously 10 to 1. Better than 11 to 0, though, right?

I was going to ask about final H2Hs but I'll wait until noon tomorrow, I guess. Sharapova leads Stosur 10-1 Sharapova vs. Errani 0-0 Kvitova leads Stosur 3-0 Kvitova leads Errani 2-0 Everything is aligned for Maria, basically. But I put more stock into Stosur's last loss to her - in Stüttgart; the score was 6-7 7-6 7-5 so Stosur had a real chance - than in her sole win, at last year's RR just before Maria w/d.

Day 12.

Post by Grarliner on Jun 6, 2012 16:08:41 GMT -5
I'm more inclined to remember the final of Rome 2011. Maria won 4 and 1 or something and it was a straight up beatdown. Stosur was nowhere close on her best surface and Maria's worst.
Yes, I know about the Stuttgart match but even that has its drawbacks. Sam had matchpoint, didn't she? She failed to close that and if she had it would have supplied actual hope that she might be turning it around against Maria.
I think it comes down to a bad match of styles for Sam. Maria is tall and loves the high ball. She batters those shots. That's all Sam has! Plus, Maria hits so flat she can get the ball to Stosur's backhand and then ...

I didn't see it, but Stüttgart showed us that Stosur might have come out of the "obvious beatdown" stage of the rivalry. And she did shock us all in the USO final - I think against Sharapova she'll play with no pressure and be able to just hit the damn BH. And Sharapova in Slam finals recently has hardly been nails. Still...the match-up issues are huge, as they would be vs. Kvitova as well.
The last two Kvitova/Sharapova matches, Kvitova dominated the crucial set (winning her service games with ease while always threatening Maria's), only to somehow lose it. If she can change that she has a chance...

Tomorrow is an only check scoreboard and hope a surprise happens day. Ugh. I have an awful feeling Maria will crush Petra, too. This match is for the Career Slam, Wimbly revenge, #1, etc... FIGHTING WARRIOR MASHA like we've never seen, if needed.

While I'd make Queen Masha a 60/40 favourite against Kvitty, it's by no means a foregone conclusion. In Australia, it was 6-4 final set and Stuttgart was indoors so different conditions. Most importantly though, if GOATra shows up then Maria doesn't stand a chance. That's the problem for Petra though, GOATra comes for a couple of games a set and Masha's experienced enough to weather the storm.
As long as Stosur doesn't win I'm happy with either Errani, Masha or Kvitova as champion.

I think after all of this, we're going to get the appropriate champion. Three Slam winners, and if Errani does somehow get the title, she'll have to have gone through two of them. The winner will be correct.

And for all the "ZOMG!!11~ DRAWS FALLIN APART!11", Petra and Masha have lived up to their seedings for the semifinal: #4 vs #2.

If we get a Stosur/Sharapova final I'll probably end up supporting Sam. Stosur, Double Slam Champ and Sharapova, Career Slam are equally awful prospects, but at least Stosur and her fans wouldn't be insufferable about it. Personality-wise I'm fine with Sam.

I see they got some tennis in on the pink clay (Navratilova/Novotna vs Testud/Tauziat).

Dang, I was hoping I'd get to see Sam-Sara. I'll be leaving in a couple hours for a couple of days and won't have internet access.
So Mashabot becomes #1 with a win today? Didn't know that. I doubt she actually wants all the extra demands the WTA places on the player in that position, so I'm sure that's not driving her at all.

So! Cold, wet clay: who does it favor?

I don't think it necessarily helps either Masha or Petra - the court will play slowly and the balls will be heavier. Neither of them plays in those conditions terribly well.

With how this is turning out, I'd say Janie has scheduled her trip very wisely.
Of all this tournament's matches they could have shown, ITV4 are replaying...Nadal/Almagro. Thanks that's great.

LOL. In her first service game, Errani wins 100% of her first serve points, 0% of her second serve ones, all of which Stosur just runs around and crushes a FH return. This is a sad match-up.

Well, really good tennis to break back. Once they're in the rally it's obvious who's better, it's just that rallies will comprise about 10% of the points.

5-5. Impressive. Once Stosur wins the first set though, she doesn't lose the match (in a GS).
