Federer can't stomach Kooyong but Open defence is on menu
ROGER FEDERER has withdrawn from this week's Kooyong Classic, the warm-up event for next week's Australian Open, because of a stomach virus.
In a statement, the Swiss said he had to miss the event in order to recover in time for the defence of his Open title at Melbourne Park.
"After arriving in Australia last Friday, I came down with a terrible stomach virus on Saturday and it continued to get worse over the weekend," Federer said.
"After trying to practise on Saturday afternoon, I went to see the doctors and they performed a series of tests. The doctors have advised me I should take a couple of days off and recuperate so that I am able to be 100 per cent for the start of the Australian Open."
(Haas Been had withdrawn earlier with a sore shoulder)

Murray crashes out as Baghdatis advances at Melbourne tennis MELBOURNE (AFP) — A tired and nauseous Andy Murray was beaten by Russia's Marat Safin at the Kooyong Classic on Wednesday, while Marcos Baghdatis started with a win at the Australian Open warm-up. Defending champion Andy Roddick thrashed Ivan Ljubicic while David Nalbandian, the form player of the end of last season, joined Roger Federer on the sidelines after suffering a back spasm in training. Britain's Murray, who began his season by winning the Qatar Open on Saturday, said he was close to vomiting during the 6-1, 6-4 loss to Marat Safin in the relegation-promotion eight-man event. "I had a run at the track this morning and our match was moved up," said the world number nine. " I felt like a couple of chicken sandwiches were ready to come up. "I'm glad there were not that many long rallies." Baghdatis, a late call-up after top-ranked Federer's stomach complaint, shrugged off his jet-lag to register a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Nikolay Davydenko. "I was a bit tired from the travel, I need to play better for the Open," said the 2006 Australian Open finalist, who lost his first match of the season in Chennai last week. "I felt a bit heavy on court, I was not fluid. I had a bit of a pain in the knee but it was because of the jet-lag." Roddick, winner of the last two editions, easily handled Ivan Ljubicic 6-3, 6-0. "This is an important event, I'm getting matches," said the American, who trained for the hot weather in Hawaii. "And traditionally, players who have done well here have also done well at the Aussie Open. "There's nothing wrong with playing matches against top-20 guys." Murray, now surrounded by a revolving team of coaches after parting company with the high-priced Brad Gilbert, was also focused on the Open. "I didn't feel too great on the court, but after a couple of days the jet-lag will be better. I want to arrive at the Australian Open in 100 percent condition," he said. Nalbandian now faces a battle to be fit for the season's first grand slam, which starts on Monday. "The doctor told me it was a distension of the muscle," ???said Nalbandian, who was to have faced Fernando Gonzalez in his Kooyong start. He was replaced by Australian Open junior champion Brydan Klein. "I need to rest, take treatment and we'll see how it goes," said Nalbandian, who ended last season with back-to-back Masters titles in Madrid and Paris.

MELBOURNE (AFP) - Andy Roddick continued his bid for a Kooyong Classic hat-trick on Thursday with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Marat Safin to reach his fourth consecutive final.
Roddick braved 41 degrees Celsius (106 Fahrenheit) temperatures for the quickfire win, which sets him up for Saturday's final against either Marcos Baghdatis or Fernando Gonzalez.
"It was hot and windy, we got both today," said the former world number one, who is seeking a title boost ahead of next week's Australian Open Grand Slam. "I concentrated well as you don't want to stay out there for so long."
Roddick was beaten in the 2005 final by Roger Federer but then won the 2006 edition against Tommy Haas before taking his revenge over the top-ranked Swiss last year.
Meanwhile Britain's Andy Murray said he had never been in better shape for a major as he bounced back from his opening Kooyong Classic defeat to beat Ivan Ljubicic 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-2. There was no recognition on his part that this is not saying a helluva lot.

"MELBOURNE (AFP) - Roger Federer plans to renew his rivalry with Pete Sampras in a match at Madison Sqaure Garden in New York after a successful series of exhibitions with the American legend in Asia."
Aha. Now that Sampras win in Asia makes sense!

Not that the Knicks deserve to play there anymore...

Sampras will have an exho vs a player who should be retired like he is, Safin, during the San Jose tournament. No doubt Pete will win and everyone will say this avenges his USO final defeat.

I'm going to Sampras/Fed. *ashamed* I bought the ticket. I love spectacle. I'm also going to see the Pope in Yonkers, NY in April even though I'm not religious in the slightest.

I'm also going to see the Pope in Yonkers, NY in April even though I'm not religious in the slightest. waiting for your report. I watched on TTC. I hate the whole idea. It's all pressure to Roger, to make Pete not look bad, but also to win. It's a stupid format for him to have become ensnared in. I believe Pete unconsciously intend to do him harm. It's been blisters after practicing and compromised play at IW, trailing into Miami...then the Asian-3 debacle leading to Mono...It's a loose wire in Federer needing this and doing it. He has stepped outside the lines, thus spake a big fan of Feds who wishes he had not, avothrustra...whoops in the het of it all forget where and who I am, thus spake Freudothrustra

"Sampras has said he doubted the climb from 12 Grand Slam titles to 15 will be problematic for the 26-year-old Federer, but isn’t it fascinating how Sampras, retired since 2002, restrung his rackets and recalibrated his serve just as Federer closed in? What was the restless competitor inside the Sampras subconscious trying to say? What, if anything, has he set out to do, or undo?"
/me suspects that Freudo is really Harvey Araton and writes for the NY Times.

The only thing worse than baseball writers are tennis writers.
We're just seeing Roger's turn into being more like the Williams, which he's hinted at a few times.

The Tennis Cult already established last year that Sampras was trying to jinx him -- all he's done now is to step the campaign up a notch.

Araton, not bad company...i should hang out here more often...so my ideas old hat, but I had it back last year while I tended to Roger's feet at IW and Dina, I said Roger's playing a loose wire here, too. He so used to being friends, and now the young guys don't want to be his friend, they want to beat him, so in part he's lonely and looking for older friends (I'm available) and, well, its not the money, he has too much for that to play, but the adulation, that's what I think, and the connect to history. He's always been sweet on being part of history, he gets teary when he feels it, like AO with Laver, his idol, and Wimby last year, where he felt himself passing out of the present into legend land. Oh well, he's not perfect, but sure has brought me a lot of pleasure. Hope he mostly stays between the lines and gets the work done.

Roger Federer winds down his tough season with Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe this week, playing a series of exhibitions despite the back injury that hampered his bid for a fifth ATP Masters Cup.
The Swiss star graces Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday and Macau on Thursday then will rest and recuperate over the Christmas break before his focus turns to the first Grand Slam of the season in Australia in January.
While Federer has signed up for this week, which also features James Blake, he has made it clear that these sort of events will not be on his schedule next year, despite the lure of a fat pay cheque.
Instead, his focus will be on beating Pete Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam singles' titles. He currently has 13, with the Australian Open his next target.

The part I like most is when one player tries too hard against the old/inferior player and then feels guilty about it. Blake beaned Borg at the net, and there was awkward silence. Blake serving aces and getting booed. Everyone realizing how stupid this is.
