Natalie Grandin has a very good chance of qualifying for the MD, heh.

One of the qualifiers gets to play Al Nabhani in the MD. As if the Q draw itself wasn't a gift enough.

One of the qualifiers gets to play Al Nabhani in the MD. As if the Q draw itself wasn't a gift enough. LOL. I hope it's the winner of the Kapshay-N. Kichenok match. I vaguely remember a player by the name of Agnes Szatmari coming through qualies and winning a round at one of these events. She was overranked by hundreds of spots for a full year.

LOL @ that qualy draw. Your lottery winners include Tadeja Majeric (who's at least been rampant in the ITFs - this is her first WTA MD), Nadiya Kichenok (beating her thus-far-superior twin to a WTA MD debut), La Bych and even Future No 1 Caroline Garcia (who got the Al Nabhani jackpot). As if that wasn't enough, Jugic-Salkic and Gavrilova get in as LLs.

Actually, Majeric has played 2 WTA main draws before. Both time at the fifth Slam Portoroz. The first time in 2006 coming from qualies and losing in round 1 and the second time as a WC, losing to Dinara Safina.

As I was typing that I did wonder whether I'd forgotten about Portoroz! Majeric is an odd case, she seems to have been around for years as a classic case of a globe-trotting ITF journeywoman who goes to India and Nigeria to pick up the easiest points she can. Then she won her first 25K in India at the end of last year and somehow carried that over to the US 25Ks and here she is in the top 200 and moving upwards fast.

Oh my god, Putintseva's "COME AWWWWWWWWWN"s are out of control.

Post by lexpretend on Feb 11, 2013 8:50:28 GMT -5
Being real, Putintseva is just a very average and limited player. She has outsize self-belief, a willingness to try any shot, and pumping herself up could work in her favour à la Bartoli, but in terms of shots she doesn't have anything she can reliably control points with. Barthel has been quite careless today and she's still cruising.
It was quite funny when the laid-back Mona finally got pissed off with Yulia and did a "C'MAWWWWWWN" of her own.

Insofar as one can tell from half a set against Serena in bored mode, Gavrilova is nothing special at all.

Lots of girls seem to have miraculously risen from their deathbeds this week. Sloane too.
Great stuff from Mona. Looks like Angie won't be holding on to her top 10 spot this year though.

Zakopalova d. Stephens 46 76(5) 76(5). Stephens had a MP in the second set and served for the match in both second and third sets. Hype train goes CRASH into a tree.
Not that much of a surprise, I put money on it. Zak is a minor upset artist and you could have predicted a let-down for Sloane, especially in a tournament like this.

Player with no forehand bagels player with all the forehands in Romania. Gooo Mona, put another smile on our faces. Disconcertingly, Mona somehow hasn't managed to win a single set against Woz so far.

I tuned into Woz/Barthel match at 5*-4 with Woz serving for the set. I was ready to curse Barthel right there, but thankfully she broke. Then I saw her serving. She has no excuse for such a poor serve with her height. It's ridiculously slow, even Woz was ready to hit winners from it.
Is she working on it?

Barthel also somehow allows Woz to dominate points for some reason. Finally great return, but followed by another error.

Woz 3-0 in a tie-break after 3 horrible errors from Barthel, I can't with her.
3-3 Woz made 2 horrible errors of her own, lol

Thanks to Woz's errors, Mona made it 5-3 (from 0-3), so she decided an error was in order. 5-5 What a horrible match!
