I tuned in at 0-2 in the third. It's always like that. You see someone play fantastic tennis and immediately think "ZOMG, why isn't she in top 20/in top 5/a Slam winner yet??!". Then you watch their next match and you know why. But Voegele is definitely not bad.

The thing to remember is, she was losing matches to nobodies like these for the last two years.

It's shocking consistency. Add Miami SF to that and it's unheard of for her since, what, 2010?

Too bad for Voegele. I like her, and she's got a nice flat game. But, she's little.

I'm so glad I didn't change the channel when I tuned in at 5-1 in the first set for Woz. It was truly spectacular shotmaking from Voegele. It wasn't really that Wozniacki was playing badly, but Voegele was crushing every single weaker or shorter shot from her. Great match. Wow! Shocker. I assumed it was just another case of wimp Woz, though she usually does well in these matches against scrubs. Maybe Voegele is emerging from scrubland? But I feel bad for Woz, the titlist here 2 years ago. Not saying I liked Woz at #1 or even #5, but sheesh, she should still be good enough to stay in the #8 - 12 range. This kind of loss, at this event where she prospered before, makes that idea seem kind of iffy. Does she actually belong at #25? Anyway, who cares, because excessively-sinking Woz is way more than made up for by the surprise JJ resurgence. May it continue all season! I think she's performing up to her ranking range now, Janie. Woz is winning just enough to be #10.

The thing to remember is, she was losing matches to nobodies like these for the last two years. Right. She's actually winning them right now, uglystyle or not. Serena never liked playing her before but I think she'll whip some ass tomorrow.

The Willies match was beyond awkward. Venus frequently hit the ball into the middle of the net. Serena dramatically ran for balls three feet away from her. They both looked pained. The entire thing was just odd.
To an above point, Jankovic was losing matches like this left and right for a long time. I'm of the opinion that she can actually play tennis and hope she can have a few more good seasons, so I'm pleased by recent events. I also probably couldn't name half of the players in the top ten at this point, so what do I know.

Too bad for Voegele. I like her, and she's got a nice flat game. But, she's little. Her strokes are a bit wonky for consistency. Smacking huge FHs won her the second set but it was no surprise when it broke down again. There's a touch of Petkovic to her. I like her too, though.

In that game, JaJa rubbed clay off her dress with a towel as if she was drying herself after a shower, and then chuckled openly when her defence made Serena net a smash and go into full-on crybaby mode

She really did. Serena was untouchable in the final set though, hitting winners from impossible positions like it was nothing.

Please share the drama. JaJa drama is almost always good. Serena was doing what she got pissed off at Azza for in Dubai this year and was not ready when Lady JaJa fired down a first serve. The serve hit the net anyway, but the umpire called a let and Serena said she wasn't ready. JaJa was like "what." and Serena was like "we play when I am ready". So I think JaJa was a bit rattled and was moaning to herself and the umpire. Only wins 2 further games. Shame, she was 40-15 up in the opening game of the second set too. Oh well, I don't think she'd have won in the end anyway. She looked a bit spent.
