Barty/Burnett again Wonder if Barty can put things right this time. Will be interesting to see how well Burdette transfers to clay. Thunder to flop to Castano again, I expect.

Barty There is just NO ONE good coming up. We're stuck with Serena/Maria/Vika for at least 10 more years. Sesil survived Castano, but will get walloped by Min.

Barty/Burnett again Wonder if Barty can put things right this time. 1-6 1-6 LOL. Young Ash discovering that life outside the AUS 25Ks is slightly tougher. Rampre won a match 1-6 6-0 6-2 over Zhang. LOL @ Oudin/Jankovic. JaJa, you have to get a win over this girl at some point... Robson is so losing to Star Candle Head. I'm anticipating a Stephens/Keys 3R showdown - hopefully Keys takes that. Putintseva! Allezdavaicmon in Gorgeous' sulky face all match please! Weird seeing Stephens, CSN and Mona with 1R byes.

RAMPRE?!?!!?!!! That's a huge surprise, given her horrible form this year. Maybe she just hates challengers now that she's had that taste of the big time. I see that MLDB beat her bumpkinette, but fell today to the lower-seeded Pegula.

Even back at WTA level, Rampre does her usual thing of losing a tight three-setter - 36 64 46 to Burnett Min did indeed thrash Thunder. Both Pliskovas seem to be in full-on tank mode - Karolina already out to King, and right now it's pretty funny to see how quickly the scoreboard is moving for Kristyna against Garcia.

Ben Rothenberg @benrothenberg 1m Rodionova holds, gets the trainer out, yells at the trainer. Trainer gives spectacular eye-roll in response. No MTO awarded.

Background to that: leading 4-3*, adv BMS in the final set, A-Nasty started writhing in pain and went off court for a MTO. When she came back she still acted like she could barely move but BMS couldn't put her away and A-Nasty has just started going for her shots. BMS just saved a MP, it's 5-5...

LOLLLLL, the drama. A-Nasty furiously berating a linesman. "Call the freaking balls!" Holds for 6-5.

BMS takes the final set TB. The handshake is actually quite nice!
Elsewhere, I genuinely suspect the WTA of fixing draws for Eugenie Bouchard because she's pretty. No wins of note but plenty of WCs and easy draws in big-point events - her win over Burnett here takes her to the edge of the top 100.

Elsewhere, I genuinely suspect the WTA of fixing draws for Eugenie Bouchard because she's pretty. No wins of note but plenty of WCs and easy draws in big-point events - her win over Burnett here takes her to the edge of the top 100. Eh, she's only had two WCs so far this year, which I guess is still quite cushy for a relative unknown, but one was just for Auckland and the other led her straight to a Martha beatdown. She's been in qualifying for all of her other tournaments this year. At the same time, she's hot with potential for $$$ (after all, haven't Nike already started to pimp her out?) and this is the WTA, so they possibly are doing some things behind the scenes. I still think she's destined to be Harkleroad 2.0.

Three last year too...it was more noticing that she's racking up a lot of points from 1R Premier wins without having actually scored any impressive victory. It doesn't feel like she should be top 100 yet.
Watched the end of Soler Espinosa beating Fran in a third set TB. SSE is more aggressive and hard-hitting than your typical ESP, credit to her, but Fran was so lacklustre and even though the TB went 8-6 you never thought her heart was in it. She had a MP, and shanked a return that probably landed two states over.
Also watched Petkorazzi beating Townsend. Townsend's game is weird, she'd make for a good highlights reel - every so often she'd hit a winner or play a touch shot/volley that made you go WOW, but most of the time her groundstrokes just seemed wonky (when they regularly broke down before a rusty Petkovic's, that's not good), the backswing on her FH made me wince and she seemed to be clueless tactically even by a 16-yr-old's standards. She also still doesn't look fit, she's a surprisingly decent mover but she can barely stay in long rallies. Her touch is really, really natural though - chasing down one Petko dropshot, she responded while sliding into it with a perfect one in response, you can't teach that.

JaJa finally got over her period! That match was a hot mess, though. JJ was so bad, Oudin must feel really confident against her for some reason because she wasn't holding back at all. Honestly, all the great winners came from Oudin - tons of great dropshots - though also a fuckton of dumb errors too, as well as some hilarious choking. Surprised by Lucic! Hanturexia lost to Erakovic Pretty funny to see Giorgi smack everything as hard as she can against Serena, who almost certainly had no idea this would happen to her.

Even Errani doesn't care about this tournament. Not a good sign for the future of Charleston.
Hantuchova is just a not very good doubles specialist nowadays. She's a Katalin Marosi.

Bouchard won again today, 3 sets over Robson. So there you go - a notable win.
Lisicki L. Burdette (!).
Jankovic is all of a sudden winning stupid matches we had gotten used to her losing. Saved 2 MPs against Garcia today. She probably logged about 5 hours of court time to beat Oudin and Garcia ...
Puig got a set from Venus ...

Robson lost to Putintseva, Arvidsson and Cornet in her last three tournaments. It's not that notable, especially as Bouchard already beat her on green clay last year and there was BFF weirdness.
Burdette's a tough opponent, but if Lisicki can't even get it together in one of the few events she usually peaks at...
JaJa isn't doing much on court but retrieving, but she is playing calmly. Garcia remains a choker of the highest order.
I totally forgot Safarova is the defending finalist here.
