I don't think grass is that much a bad surface for Stosur... is it? Obviously not the best surface for her groundstokes, but then it's true for 3/4 players in the draw. It is. She moves terribly on it, and it negates her biggest weapon, the kick serve that short girls can't handle at all. Watching only highlights on youtube often give a distorted perspective of a player. Having said that, if Conchita can win Wimbledon...

Oops. Sorry for misrepresenting your views, Hurley. My reading skills may need a little work. So, not Hurley, then, but count me in on the Grassonkova bandwagon.

Grassonkova is real grass GOAT. Riske is not. She's your usual USian type that's big, takes the ball early and can't move. She likes fast surfaces, but she's only won at Birmingham because it has a large draw, and Oprandi's shoulder broke here. Oh, okay, thanks. I don't think I've ever seen her play. And I always overlook the fact that Birmingham over the ages has never produced the big champions. It's like a Hobart. Or maybe even like what was once the Bronx 100K.

Conchi's game was perfectly fine for grass back in the day. Her great BH that she could rip passes with, and slice very well. She didn't mind her FH low, and her massive topspin had its uses. Remember, in 94, she just had to beat elderly net rushers and a young fat Davenport.

Conchita was so light on her feet, too. I'd love to see a clip of her footwork next to that of these thudding, heavy-footed baseline basher types. Then we'd see why they keep falling down and she didn't.

I remember the BH passing shots against Navratilova. Otherwise I'm not sure her game was perfectly fine for grass, her serve certainly wasn't. Navratilova didn't do enough with the returns (often slicing it back on the court) and I assume McNeil didn't do much as well. Davenport 94 was useless on grass.

She nearly lost to Martina, too. Martina was 38!

Conchi definitely would have lost to Stefanie, but that would happen on all surfaces. She had absolutely zero belief against her. I watched their 95 RG SF a couple days ago where Conchi was probably in the best form of her life, and just flatout gave up against her like even worse than everyone against the Williams' in the 2000s.
Watching old matches makes me realize that things weren't always wonderful back in the day. Oh, I'm such an Old Hag.

Footwork and movement and staying low is just as, if not more, important to grass success than the shots you have. Davenport hated grass for years. Venus was useless on it at first. Keys will probably follow their path. And it makes sense that Pironkova only became Grassonkova after a few years of getting used to it (and she has a real shot against Aga, considering their Eastbourne match last year). This favours more experienced players, too.

But "she has no good wins on grass (NB: only Serena counts as a good win)" is not actually a counter-argument to "Pironkova is significantly better on grass than on other surfaces", which is what the - by now obvious - Grassonkova thing is about.

I mean, whatever stock you do or don't put into wins over Venus, Bartoli, Radwanska and many more top 30 players, Pironkova is not getting them anywhere else but grass.
