Do they usually do this? For some reason I thought Wimbledon was the dumb-ass Slam that got everyone on the same page and then all of a sudden started staggering both draws again. But I could be thinking of AO.
Anyway HERE ARE MY PREDICTIONS: Li, Flipkens, Lisicki, Bartoli
And if I look deep into my heart, HERE ARE MY DESIRES: Li, Kvitova, Kanepi, Stephens
I don't know why Stephens. For the lulz I guess.
Frankly Kanepi and Kvitova both making it this far is a massive success for me. Because I made them.

Alternate between ladies' days and gentlemen's days for the remainder of the event.

Yes, it's like this every year since I started watching tennis. You have MANIC MONDAY and then, as you wrote, terrible Tuesday, especially on Court 1.

You know, I'm not sure if Sugar/Vika/Serena being all out is so amazing afterall. Kvitova/Flipkens/Stephens or Bartoli having Slam final (or winner!) points for 52 weeks? If it's Kvitova and she ends up not entirely sucking for the next year (unlikely), fine, otherwise, meh.

Wimbly has done this schedule as far as I can remember. Or, plans to which often went awry for QF Tuesday.
Gogo Flipper. If not her, then Agatha. If not her, then whoever but CAKE.

It's funny, I usually do a "wishlist" draw before every Grand Slam, because I'm a nerd, but I was too busy to care this time. Anyway they are usually Kvitova vs. Kanepi finals with ridiculous players like Cake making it far and they're basically comedy by the third day of the event. Figures.

It's easy to forget, but a bookmaker favourite != favourite. The reason Lisicki appears to be the favourite in term of odds is because after her impressive victory over Serena, people will bet on her like crazy, so bookmakers adjust odds accordingly. Why would you offer 8 if people are willing to bet on her at 3 or 4?

Post by DBBN on Jul 1, 2013 21:13:55 GMT -5
I understand. I just thought people would bet on a name they'd heard of who's proven she can actually win a major. I thought that would be Li. But I guess not.

And -- oddly -- if I was forced to put $1000 to pick a winner...looking at the draw, I would pick Lisicki.

I'd take LeeNa, but I'd rather keep the $1000 instead of this crap shoot.

The problem is Li has a rough time with Lisicki.
I believe Kvitova would beat Lisicki, but I don't think she makes that final. And Lisicki owns CAKE. The draw favors her even though if you said "pick from the eight players left," you probably would go a different route.
Which is why everyone is wrong to pick her and I also pick her.

Hum, I think the main issue with punters is that they put too much importance on the latest result.
Just because Lisicki beat the GOAT and didn't choke against the GOAT doesn't mean she is a new person. She still has 3 matches to play (read: 3 opportunities to choke). She might be the favourite on paper against most players left in the draw, but this is irrelevant. It's such a unique opportunity for all 8 players that it's going to be about who will handle her nerves the best. And I don't think Lisicki is a favourite in that aspect.

I also agree with that. She is mentally unstable, so that's against her. But which of these players are more stable? Probably only the winner of Li-ARad, and maybe Sloane, although she would likely be overwhelmed by a final.

Post by R. Black on Jul 1, 2013 22:47:17 GMT -5
Yeah, well, it's 100% sure she will face a more stable opponent in the semi-final (though it's weird to say that since we're talking about LeeNa). So I would say that it's enough to conclude she's not the favourite to win it all.
Also, in a span of 24 hours, she jumped from 'entirely irrelevant' to 'favourite to win according to Betfair and William Hill'. It's going to put a crazy amount of pressure on her. I wouldn't even bet on her to win tomorrow.

H2H's mean nothing with Lisicki, she can easily win or lose against any of these players. Especially when it's 2-1.
I'm not surprised punters have Lisicki as the favorite. It's not just that she beat Serena, but nobody else has a quality win and none came into Wimbly in good form.
I'll put a small bet on Kanepi, because that match is 50/50 for me. There will be bug serving, no rhythm and ugly tennis.

Nobody knows who will win. I'd like to be surprised, but I'd bet Lisicki drops to Kanepi.
Aga-Li is the match I'm watching intently. I like Na, but she's already got her Slam. I want Radwanska to do it, I think she deserves it. Li hammered her last year on hardcourts, but they are 1-1 this year.

I can understand why people would think the level of tennis Lisicki showed yesterday is enough to win the tournament (and the odds thing R. Black mentioned is the reason), but it's still a bit dumb. The girl has never even been ranked in the top 10. She played GOAT to beat Ma$ha last year and then choked against Angie. She's not some new kid breaking through, this has been her pattern for years and years. And all the other giant-killers this tournament have taught us about the usual letdown after beating a big name.
That said, if you wanted to bet on a proven name, it's not like betting on Li or Kvitova is ever, ever safe. I might be more confident for Aga if she didn't face a bad match-up in Li next (and Li is obviously rounding into form - a bagel in her last three matches).
Lisicki/Kanepi...this will be so nervy. Kaia has been so in and out all tournament, alternating between clutch and collapse completely randomly, and her poker face demeanour makes the randomness worse somehow. And this was against, like (WC) Tara Moore (GBR).
Flipper has a 2-1 H2H lead over Shitra, lulz. She'll probably make it 3-1.
Haha, CAKE is the only QFist who has not yet dropped a set. She should really beat Stephens, who was getting bossed around by Puig and whose game is less...whelming than ever. If Kanepi/Lisicki will be ugly and error-strewn this will probably be ugly and grindy.
Head: Lisicki, Li, Bartoli, Flipkens Heart: Kanepi, Radwanska, Bartoli, Kvitova

Ali, let's face it: we're the sort of tennis fans whose hearts only very, very rarely dare to expect the player they prefer to win any match whatsoever. We want those four to win; therefore, they will all break our hearts and lose.
