Did I really walk to Walmart, to buy yoga pants, sports bras, and pick up some photos I'd ordered, in just 40 minutes? SO GOOD AT LIFE.

I'm kind of shocked that I'm planning to watch at least part of Azza-Dani. Azza's game hasn't impressed at all yet, and Dani's one of those players whose rituals I find so irritating. But even without that issue, I can hardly bear to look at her since she lost to the crippled Serena that year in Wimbledon. That was so horrifying to watch that I never got over it.

The most shocking thing... after Federer losing in straight sets to Robredo. The hilarity of him following it up by beating Nadal would be so great that I almost want it to happen. It... won't. I mean, as bad as I've been at calling matches all tournament, it really, really won't happen. Still. Imagine the funny.

Oh, well, so few pro athletes are likeable, I never expect to actually like any of them -- at least not once they're out of the Hidden World, where some still manage to stay fairly human-like. At least Azza played better than she did in her previous match. Let's just draw a veil over the terrible game ending with an ugly DF when she served for the match. I do like those drop shots she's been throwing in.

I want to talk about Hantuchova. She lost tonight so I guess it's somewhat appropriate to give a career retrospective given her advanced standing. I'm probably the only one here who thinks that she's underachieved. Her groundies can be beautiful, she has a sense of the court, and the serve shouldn't be a problem. Her movement was a clear weakness, but for years the obvious letdown has been the mental game. I really feel like she might be one of the most under appreciated of her generation. She was a top five player in 2002, with a lot of promise. There was always a lot going on there - the dramatic weight loss the following year was never explained; the continual up and downs. But she did make comebacks. I don't know, I just always thought she was due her grand tournament, and I guess it never came unless we count Indian Wells. Maybe I just like that game, but I feel like she could have achieved more.

Hantuchova is like a lesser Davenport to me, so it makes sense that you like her. I've never really cared for her because she's a "pretty" girl with insane fans and attracts creepy pedos.
I think she has to go down as an underachiever as well, since she was remarkably consistent in 2002 following her IW win, and SEWTA has only gotten easier since then. Then the weight loss and drama queen stuff. It seemed like she quickly recovered from that (I haven't heard any personal stuff from her in forever, at least) but she always has some niggling injury. She's a case of your usual Eastern Euro overplayer, and with her frail figure, not surprising her body broke down often.
Now that you mention it, I suppose it's nice she had a run like this late in her career. Until I just thought of Elbo. Now I'm sad.

I don't know, the drama the year after her breakthrough obviously set her back but after she got over it she spent like a decade at a consistent level, with no major injury breaks - I think she just got figured out. Being a mental weakling was always the big knock against her but she could be so dumb strategically as well, and she had so little fight. I think she settled into a nice life where she got a lot of glamorous perks and she was happy with that.
Also, remember how she was praised for her finesse at the start? LMAO. I think she did possess it, her doubles success attests to that, but she never found a way of incorporating it successfully into her singles game (mostly because she was so damn slow).
In retrospect, her two IW titles seem more like over-achieving IMO.

She was always overrated because of that first Indian Wells win, in which her toughest opposition came from Henin, who was struggling with her game at the time; and Hingis, who was on her way out. It's not as if the rest of her 2002 was that spectacular either, she just had consistent results in the Slams that combined to inflate her ranking. I think she was a better player when she had that purple patch in late 2007/early 2008.

Dani can still look great for a few games at a time but everything inevitably falls apart. Like in that Australian Open semi-final in 08. The consistency and fight she displayed in 2002 just never came back after her crazy weightloss year. All her strokes are technically sound but break down at the slightest hint of pressure (especially that serve). I think her post-03 inability to construct a point hindered her much more than her poor movement. The opponent can't take advantage of your slowness if you keep going for dtl winners straight from the first ball.
