TJ retires Swedish tennis player and former Grand Slam champion Thomas Johansson announced his retirement from the sport on Friday. "After a lot of thinking, I have now decided to step off the train and end my professional tennis career," he said in a statement. "During the fall I had to go through yet another operation after a foot injury and a month ago I became a dad for the second time." ~~~~~~ clink ~~~~~~

Agustin Calleri has (almost) retired. From MTF: www.clarin.com/diario/2009/06...m-01944147.htm"That's it, it's over, my body said enough and tennis has retired me", Calleri said. He won't play for the rest of the year and is planning to play Buenos Aires and Acapulco next year as a farewell. Augie

I like Augie as you know, but I'm glad to see he responded to my numerous TTR notations next to his name in recent months.

I liked Augie too, but he's been brutal the last couple times I've seen him play.
Acapulco as a farewell?

"I will stop at the end of the season. It's not really my decision, it's my body that's forced me to make it."
- S. Grosjean
He will play doubles at RG, partnering Gasquet, but says he did not seek a singles WC. He has not ruled out a singles appearance at Wimby, where he was twice a semifinalist.

Taylor Dent announced his retirement today. I can see why. He had a losing record this year (in spite of winning a match at each Grand Slam) and was frequently brutalized by the top players.
But it was a massive achievement just to be back on the court playing on the ATP after his injuries. And did you know he is married to former pro Jennifer Hopkins? I had no idea!

Yeah, bizarrely, I did know that. At least, at some point in the past I knew it. Probably I knew it from the old Tennis Week magazine. I knew EVERY tennis thing back then. I liked Dent. He looked like a happy but goofy farmer boy out there and he loved to rush the net. Yeah, it's great he got to come back for a spell.

I knew EVERY tennis thing back then. I miss when I knew every tennis thing too! Martin Damm retired as well. There's nowhere else to put this, so here goes: I met a Finnish girl here and asked her if she knew who Jarrko Nieminen was and she said ofcourse, he is our only tennis player!

I can't recall when and where, but I do remember following this on livescore when it occurred. And ofcourse when she got handed two breadsticks by Tina at the Aussie Open.

I saw Emma Laine live. She's a rare case of a crappy player looking even worse in person. No idea how she got to top 100 level.

Carlos Moya announced his retirement. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ clink ~~~~~~~~~~~~ I liked Carlosh. Mainly because of his brilliant movement for a fairly tall guy. I think if he had more of a killer mentality (and a backhand), he could have been more dominant. I'll never forget the way he would get all super kamikaze serve-volley sometimes on fast surfaces.

Pretty good career. #1 for twice as long as Rafter with half the accomplishments, though. Other than the Slam he won, how come Carlos never got anywhere near another GS title? Did he even reach another GS semi?

Didn't he reach the USO semi one year, losing to Poo? That was one of the kamikaze serve-volley matches.
/me looks it up.
Ja, that was the only other semi. That was 1998, the year of the RG title.
Quite surprised to see that his highest year-end ranking was no higher than #5 (1998, 2002 and 2004)

BRATISLAVA — Slovakia's former French Open semi-finalist Dominik Hrbaty announced his retirement from the sport on Monday citing the reason as being his wife was due to give birth in December.
The 32-year-old - who reached the 1999 French Open semi-finals and also reached three Grand Slam quarter-finals - made the announcement at an exhibition tournament he played in along with the already retired former world number one Thomas Muster of Austria and Russian former glamour girl Anna Kournikova.
"I'm looking forward to a new chapter. I want to spend more time with my family, we're expecting a baby late December," Hrbaty told journalists.
Hrbaty, nicknamed 'Domino' and who reached a best ever world ranking of 12 in October 2004, won six ATP singles tournaments and was a member of the Slovakian team that reached the 2005 Davis Cup final.
Hrbaty, Slovakian sportsman of the year in 2005, also won the Hopman Cup twice, in 2005 (with Daniela Hantuchova) and 2009 (with Dominika Cibulkova).
