I have a sinking feeling that I'll only remember Hrbaty for that bizarre shirt with the cut-outs on the back.

Didn't he reach the USO semi one year, losing to Poo? That was one of the kamikaze serve-volley matches. /me looks it up. Ja, that was the only other semi. That was 1998, the year of the RG title. Quite surprised to see that his highest year-end ranking was no higher than #5 (1998, 2002 and 2004) God, Phillippoussis made two Grand Slam finals. Abhorrent! I'm surprised that he spent so much time in the top ten after 1998 yet couldn't get to the last four even once at a major after.

BRATISLAVA — Slovakia's former French Open semi-finalist Dominik Hrbaty announced his retirement from the sport on Monday citing the reason as being his wife was due to give birth in December. The 32-year-old - who reached the 1999 French Open semi-finals and also reached three Grand Slam quarter-finals - made the announcement at an exhibition tournament he played in along with the already retired former world number one Thomas Muster of Austria and Russian former glamour girl Anna Kournikova. "I'm looking forward to a new chapter. I want to spend more time with my family, we're expecting a baby late December," Hrbaty told journalists. Hrbaty, nicknamed 'Domino' and who reached a best ever world ranking of 12 in October 2004, won six ATP singles tournaments and was a member of the Slovakian team that reached the 2005 Davis Cup final. Hrbaty, Slovakian sportsman of the year in 2005, also won the Hopman Cup twice, in 2005 (with Daniela Hantuchova) and 2009 (with Dominika Cibulkova). I initially read that as " beating his wife" ...

Hrbaty! I used to root for him. Janie, don't forget that he also used to have awesome hats.

I am relieved to say I've forgotten the hats. On another note, Tommy Haas announced that he is NOT retiring.

I hear Nicolas Lapentti retired. Is that OLD NEWS?
Anyway, remember when he was Top Ten? That was a weird time.

Scud and Krud were too, right? Now their balls are old and saggy.

Wow, I've forgotten the New Balls! I did see the Lapentti retirement news on TTC's annoying crawl, but quickly forgot it. But he will always live on in my memory, thanks to his classic post-match war of words with Dick in Toronto, which we have discussed here before. Which reminds me, we no longer ever see Roddick flailing around the court with the wildly over-dramatized cramping that so irked Nico (and everyone). I guess he finally got more fit. Anyway, a toast to you, Nico! Come be a commentator on TTC!

Or he became less of a douchebag. Mind you, it is Roddick, so you're probably right. He probably just became more fit.

They didn't do too badly with that original eight. They picked 4 Slam champs including the best of all time, plus the solid Haas. Zabaleta and Lapentti were ok. Gambill? Well, 7 out of 8 isn't bad.

Safin was an early addition to the original cast, as were Poo and Norman. Gambill was removed fairly early on, and was replaced by Roddick.

Zabaleta was as useless as Gambill! Well, both of them had respectable journeyman careers, I guess. And yeah, that's a good hit rate the ATP got.

Kuerten was already a slam winner when they picked him, so they don't get credit for that one!

Kuerten was already a slam winner when they picked him, so they don't get credit for that one! Well, maybe, but in 1999 it wasn't looking that good for more Slams, right? Isn't that how it went? It's a shame that Norman was only good for one year. Was it just injuries that got to him?
