That was worth catching. In Portugal and everything.

Elena plays Kudrayevtseva in the 1st round. Winnable.

Winnable and won, 61 63. It's a new dawn for Giant Barbie!

Lisicki next. The run ends.

It was a good run, though.
It's so frustratingly unpredictable, though. It was ever thus, I guess, but still...last summer's Portoroz QF and Bronx 50K win, then barely another match win for the rest of the year. Opens 2009 with four straight losses (to Camerin! And...who is Ana Jovanovic?), then the 25K victory out of qualies. Builds on that with losses to Jugic-Salkic (!), Zahlavova (!!) and Scheepers (!!!), setting her nicely up for this good run. Makes no sense at all.

Yeah, Camerin is terrible. And she just won a 100K, so she's back in the Top 100 AGAIN. She's like herpes, or Rossana de los Rios.

Remember that time Nastya lost to Camerin in her career year.

Elena is actually getting a bit predictable...
When she's playing lots of matches, she seems to perform much better. Of course, this rarely happens since she's 1) Fine China Barbie, and 2) tries qualifying for events like this, and you won't often play crap like Sexy Lexy in the opening match.

She's outmatched, of course, so she's losing, but it's a respectable loss. She's kept Lisicki out there for almost an hour and a half already, it's 46 13, and EB is fighting hard on SL's serve right now. Wish her own service games were going better.
46 14, SL finally wins one of those game points. Ah, well, it was a nice run.

What happened?? Lena now serving at 46 56 ...

Post by janie on May 6, 2009 7:19:27 GMT -5
Oh, well, 46 57, 2 hours 3 minutes. Not a bad effort. But what bad serve stats! Either Lisicki has a phenomenal ROS or Lena's serve was awfully weak today.

Elena's serve has been poor for a long time. The shoulder injury she had must have been very serious.

Tough draw for EB in Saint-Gaudens: she plays 2nd seed Petra Cetkovska in r1. She didn't have to play qualies.
Oh, well, this will be a good test, blah blah blah

She almost beat Cetkovska last year. So, meh.

Not this year. From Eggy: Cetkovska d. Bovina 62 61 And so ends the week where EB got to skip qualies.

Ack. Reports of Elena's match vs. Lisicki were good. Improving tennis. Then, this.

I know it's dumb to ever post about events that Elbo enters, but since she pulled out of Birmingham I thought it might be worth mentioning that she's on the qualy list for a 100K in Marseille that week. On clay.
By the way, for some reason, Marseille's English-language name is "Marseilles". Yes, a silent s is added at the end to make it English. Who thought that up?

Saw an Eggy post over at the world which said that EB didn't enter Wimby qualies -- glad to know this in advance. It also explains why she'd be opting to play on clay a week from now instead of on grass in Nottingham this coming week.

I know Elbo hates grass, but you have to play slams when you can. Pff.

Elbo's 1R loss in the Galatina 25K this week to Catalina fucking Castano has gone oddly unnoticed here.

Yeah, I just found out about that myself and was coming to post it. Didn't even know she was playing this week.
Catalina Castano (COL) d. (2/wc)Elena Bovina (RUS) 64 26 62
Hope she can get it together in Marseille. She's moved up into the MD there, which is probably a bad thing right now.

Just discovered in her wtaworld fan thread that Elbo won the dubs in Galatina. In fact, she and Kulikova didn't lose a set in their march to the title. There we were, all caught up in Roger's silly old RG, and we missed the bigger story! Here's how it happened: 1st Round: BOVINA (RUS) / KULIKOVA (RUS) defeated DENTONI (ITA) / GIOVINE (ITA) 6-1 6-1 Quarterfinal: BOVINA (RUS) / KULIKOVA (RUS) defeated CANDLE-HEAD (ESP) / LEPORE (ARG) 6-4 6-4 Semifinal: BOVINA (RUS) / KULIKOVA (RUS) defeated CRAVERO (ARG) / PIEDADE (POR) (1) 7-5 6-4 Final: BOVINA (RUS) / KULIKOVA (RUS) defeated GARCIA-VIDAGANY (ESP) / SALERNI (ARG) 6-2 6-1

Well when you go and put it that way, it does sound crummy. And there I was, all happy and everything that Elbo won a 25K dubs title, because as a Hidden World fan, I've lost all perspective. Anyway, she and Timea got in the Marseille draw as a WC team, and today they took out the 4th seeds, that would be MEP + Chin-Wei Chan, in r1. Fine China plays her first singles match tomorrow; the qualifier she drew is Hidden World dirtballer Silvia Soler-Espinosa of ESP.

It's especially crummy when one has eternal injury problems, and decides to play MORE for no good reason.
Maybe Elena should swallow her pride and become a doubles specialist. Definitely easier on the body.

Given her singles result today, I have to agree: Soler Espinosa def. Fine China Barbie 64 60
