Elbo/Timea will play Tax/Pitu for the Marseille doubles final. Elbo will have a doubles ranking next week. Sticking with the "French clay" theme, she's the top seed in the Montpelier 25K next week, and in fact is the only top-200 player in the field. Not that that ensures she'll win a match or anything.

Playing a 25K over Wimbledon qualies says a lot.
Seriously, doubles specialist.

Well...the Montpelier draw is out, and Elbo isn't in it. So either she's seen sense and is playing Wimbledon, or she's injured again.

How can she be injured? She played the whole doubles final, which ended in one of those super-tb things, and she looks fine in all the pics from Marseille. And Eggy said she didn't even enter Wimbledon qualies, so that can't be it. Who knows what's going on with her. It was obviously a really late withdrawal, judging by the fact that they stuck a 9-seed in her spot. Oh, well. Anyway, lots of new pics here; it's been a while. www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=4434&page=198#post15869227

Elena's upcoming 2R match against Mladenovic in this week's Belgian 25K should be of interest to Leena.

The other board has nothing on this match.
Meh, looking up Bovina scores. Memories. 2003 Scottsdale, where I literally cried and could not believe she lost so badly to Trannie. 2003 Wimbledon, OMG. Andrew and Jordan would laugh at my pain when following her horrible matches. Fuckers. Ah, when I was young, and stupid, and completely insane. The good ol' days. Lena makes me feel old and sad. She's like the old decrepit dog I had since I was born. You know we'd be better off shooting her off in the field. But, you can't. Nobody can replace her. Nothing will replicate August 2000. As much as we try.
But, things don't change. The other board gives me nothing but "YAY ANNASOPHIA :50 FACES:" and I get nothing useful. Tennis sucks. Just lose to Kiki and die. Thank you.

I think the other board had nothing because the match was played today. Elena BOVINA (RUS) (8) defeated Kristina MLADENOVIC (FRA) 6-2 7-6(4) I admit I'm following her this year strictly from old hablt. And I thought I wouldn't even look up this match, but habits that are so old don't die easily. At least she won! Leena, speaking of your young EB-fan days, do you remember sending me a PM on the other board asking me to please not give up on Giant Barbie? I think I replied that I was indeed giving up on her despite your plea -- and look at me all these years later, still posting her scores like an uncontrollable robot.

Fail. I wanted her to flail about in NH qualies again this year. Oh well.
Graf, Williams, Capriati, Davenport, Henin... Kuznetsova..... Wonziacki......... Bovina.

Hrmph, she'd be better off losing. Yes, I recall that, Janie. There was that period around 04-05 where Elena became the forgotten Russina. It was for good reason.

She should never be forgotten by fans of the Russians because she's the one who finally broke the lengthy Russian title drought back in 2002. Before that win in Warsaw, all the Russians were playing out of Pornikova's neurotic "can't win a title" playbook, but after that, the floodgates opened. So she earned her footnote in tennis history, even if hardly anyone's aware of it now that Russian titles are a dime a dozen. Sadly, for me, being a fan of the hapless Russians was a lot more fun back in the days of the No-Titles Curse. I even loved young Nadya back then!

EB in Westende, cont: QF: Elena BOVINA (RUS) (8) defeated Yera CAMPOS-MOLINA (ESP) 6-1 6-0 SF: Eleni DANIILIDOU (GRE) defeated Elena BOVINA (RUS) (8) 6-4 6-2 (Daniilidou went on to lose the final to qualifier Estelle Guisard, 16 26 ) Elbo isn't defending her Bronx title, which she won last year as a qualifier. So I think it's pretty clear that she's not real serious about this any more, which is probably for the best.

Would she have been ranked high enough for Bronx? She ranked back to around 300 now, so that's probably it.

Post by janie on Aug 23, 2009 16:22:49 GMT -5
Wow, I had no idea her ranking had dropped that much already, pre-Bronx.
But she still would've made the cut; she's ranked 278 now, and it looks like the last DE was Julia Cohen, who's rank at the time of entry was 354.

And when Bronx comes off next week, she'll drop below 350.
The Portoroz QF would have still been on her ranking for US Open list, so I'm sure she could have got into qualies. Apparently, she doesn't even bother with slams anymore... just retire then.
