Just 16 and died of a heart condition I always struggle to understand these deaths among young sportsmen. Aren't they the people whose health is/should be regularly screened? When I was at high school, I used to play handball for our city's team and we had to undergo numerous medical tests twice a year. huh ... no canadian school doles out fitness exams. they trust you to know if you have a problem.

huh ... no canadian school doles out fitness exams. they trust you to know if you have a problem. Are you sure about that? It might be different in BC. For some reason I think that the "bigger" sports at our school required you to get physicals. Mind you, this kid could have had a physical regularly and still died of a heart condition. Maybe they knew about it but he went on in spite of it.

In Memory of Okechi Womeodu. On Wednesday, November 10th, junior tennis player Okechi Womeodu died suddenly at his high school in Memphis, Tennessee. The sixteen year old was playing an indoor soccer event when he passed out, apparently from a heart condition. omg! How awful.

(Maytin was the 14u Orange Bowl champ last year -- this from an article at that time:)
Maytin, a Venezuelan who has been living in Miami for a year while training with Patricio Apey, earned the biggest junior title of his young career.
''He has electric legs and a big heart,'' said Apey, who has coached Gabriela Sabatini, Fernando Gonzalez and Guillermo Coria, to name a few.
Apey compared Maytin's court speed to a young Nicolas Massu. As a member of the Chilean national team, Massu was coached by Apey.
''Maytin moves better than Massu did at 14, and Massu has one of the best set of legs on the ATP Tour,'' said Apey.

I'm sure about BC ... assumed the rest. As I said on MSN, I believe you are correct, now that I think about it. I rowed and they never gave me a damn physical. If they don't give them to rowers then I would doubt that other sports g et them. They did weigh us every 5 minutes though!

He would be ok if he got a hair cut.
That said, I guess I'll stick with the other TEENS for now.
