This crazy tournament is crazy. USA sucks at every sport now, and I blame George W. Bush.

Korea needs to put the mercy rule on the US.
And what sport will the US be so desperate to put in a world competition?
World Football Classic? Nah, Samoa might win that...
World Nascar Classic? Nah, Brazil has all the good drivers...
Running out of options!

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Team USA will be cheering for South Korea to beat Japan on Wednesday night. American hopes of winning the inaugural World Baseball Classic could disappear if the Japanese prevail. Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed one hit in five shutout innings, and Japan beat Mexico 6-1 Tuesday in the second round of the WBC, putting the United States in danger of being eliminated before its next game. South Korea (2-0) can earn a berth in the semifinals by beating Japan (1-1). If that happens, the United States (1-1) would also make it by beating Mexico (0-2) on Thursday. But if Japan beats South Korea, the Americans could be eliminated from contention even before playing Mexico. That would happen if Japan wins in a nine-inning game and scores seven runs or less because of the complicated tiebreaker system being employed. That kind of outcome is a distinct possibility, since Japan has allowed only 13 runs in five WBC games while South Korea has given up just seven.

The US is likely gone. Yay. And the tiebreaker system is not complicated!

The US is likely gone. Yay. And the tiebreaker system is not complicated! It's just lowest ERA, right? Ooooohhh, the two best salsa countries are playing for a spot in the semis.

No. Least runs given up every 9 innings.

No. Least runs given up every 9 innings. Ah, that's even simpler. Thank you.

My tv has a baseball game on it; I must have put it on unconsciously! Maybe this will be the year I return to the baseball-fan roots of my childhood. But the Phillies are sort of like the Sixers as a team -- never can quite get there. I like their red shoes, though! And "we" do have Jimmy Rollins. My childhood team was the Indians. But I'm pretty sure the same players aren't still on the team any more ... where are you Jimmy Piersall?

The Twins own Towers! Bam! Everybody owns Towers! That game sucked. They were up 4-0. Actually, a lot of 4-0, 5-0 leads went by the wayside that day. Chacin is starting to get tired, but the Jays lead 6-2 in the 7th! Whooo! Take the series, babee.

Towers totally blows. The rotation is reaaaaally kinda sucky with the injuries. Luckily the offense has been excellent so far. Hopefully Burnett debuts with a good start tomorrow. I'm wondering whether last year's curse of losing to the bad teams while playing the good teams to a standstill shall repeat itself ... it has so far ... Roy, come baaaaaaaack!

SAN DIEGO - The New York Mets must have known what they were doing when they signed Julio Franco to a two-year contract. Franco, 47, became the oldest player in major league history to hit a home run when he connected for a two-run, pinch-hit shot in the eighth inning Thursday night to help the New York Mets rally for a 7-2 win over the San Diego Padres. And he wants more. "That won't be the last home run I hit, and I hope I hit one when I'm 50," said Franco, who has four career pinch-hit homers. Geezers!

Maddux and Schilling are off to great starts too as they contend with being 40. YEAR OF GEEZERS. The Jays have to ditch Towers. And horribly enough, it looks like Burnett is gonna be a VERY expensive bust. He's ALREADY whining, and Ricciardi has already cast some criticism his way about the need to get him pitching. God, 11 million a year to that guy. Didn't they see how he melted down last year in Florida? Didn't they see how he reacted to that? I wanted Kevin Millwood, myself ... I don't think he'll be a big winner this year for Texas and I don't think he would have been for Toronto, but he's a quality pitcher who is durable. He would have won 12-15 games for them. Towers ... he has NOTHING. No stuff, nothing at all. He's really, really bad. What concerns me about the Jays is that they cannot score 7 runs every game. They just can't. No team can. So when the offence hits the inevitable cold spell, the pitching will be shown to be as thin as it really is. Having Roy back to full strength will help, but it needs more than that. If I'm Ricciardi, I am looking outside the organization for pitching help. Scott Downs won't cut it, and there's not really anybody below him ready to help. Casey Janssen starts today in place of Burnett, but I doubt if he's ready. Another thing: Ted Lilly. He pitched like crap yesterday but still got the W. But how long can that go on? He was good against Boston, but that's about it. He can't finish guys off. He gets ahead, and then nibbles and gets cute and winds up throwing 100 pitches in five innings. Ideally, he's a fourth starter on a good team. He's not really better than that. He can pitch well, but his mediocre outings are such that he can't be relied upon to be quality time and again. However, 11-8 after facing Minnesota, TB, Boston twice, NYY, Baltimore and Chicago is pretty impressive. If they can sweep the O's today, I will be thrilled. And Alex Rios! Holy Moses. Vernon Wells! Maybe Vernon is the top tier player we thought he might be. And fuckin' Troy Glaus. He's gonna turn the SkyDone into the homerdome. A dinger from him is always a possibility.
