Fan Arrested after Swinging at Sheffield at Fenway Park
(Boston-AP, April 14, 2005) _ — A fan has been arrested after getting into a scuffle with New York Yankee right-fielder Gary Sheffield as he was trying to field a ball down the right field line at Fenway Park in the eighth inning.
Sheffield was fielding Jason Varitek's two-run triple along the right-field fence in the eighth inning when a fan swung a short uppercut in his direction, appearing to graze the side of the slugger's face with his right arm.
After Sheffield picked up the ball, he shoved the fan before throwing the ball back into the infield. Then he whirled around with a cocked fist, but restrained himself and began shouting in the man's face.
Sheffield did not throw a punch at the fan, and a security official quickly jumped in to separate the two.
The Red Sox won the game 8-5.

How did I not know of this thread until now!
Jays have relinquished first place to the O's, but 8-6 is still a good record. Too bad the pitching sucks and Boston gets to beat us down in Fenway.
The Nationals are in first! 8-5! Whooo! Vinny Castilla!
And my fantasy team is in dead last thus far. A pathetic start.

Enjoy the Jays' run while it lasts! Although Halladay is hurling a fine contest at Fenway presently.

4-3 win! Go Roy!
See, it's like this. Everytime Halladay and Lilly start, the Jays must win. If they do, I'll take my chance sof winning 1 of the next three. If they don't, recipe for a losing streak.
On to New York to play the Pathetic Yankees.

A quote from Rockies Manager Clint Hurdle about his bullpen.
"Sometimes you watch with both eyes open, sometimes it's with one eye open and sometimes you ask somebody what happened,'' Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said.

Report: Lawsuit alleges Lenny Dykstra used steroids, gambled illegally April 24, 2005
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Lenny Dykstra's longtime friend and business partner has accused the former Philadelphia Phillies center fielder of using steroids and gambling illegally during his baseball career in a civil lawsuit, according to a newspaper report.
Lindsay Jones, Dykstra's former partner in a lucrative car wash business, alleges the ballplayer advised him to bet thousands of dollars with a bookmaker on selected Phillies games in 1993, Dykstra's best year in the majors, the Los Angeles Times reported in Sunday editions.
Jones, who is seeking to regain interest in the car wash business, said in a sworn statement that the baseball wagers were a form of payment to him, made ``on the basis that Lenny would cover all losses, and I would use the winnings to live on.''
The lawsuit, filed last year in Ventura County Superior Court, is in binding arbitration and a decision is expected this week.
The suit also includes a sworn statement from a Florida bodybuilder and convicted drug dealer who said Dykstra paid him $20,000 plus ``special perks'' during their eight-year association to ``bulk up'' the once-slight ballplayer.
Baseball did not ban steroids until 2002, though the substances became illegal in 1991 unless prescribed by a physician.
The bodybuilder, Jeff Scott, told the Times in an interview that he injected Dykstra with steroids ``more times than I can count,'' and that Dykstra stepped up his steroid use in spring training of 1993 because it was a contract year.
That year, Dykstra led the National League in hits, walks and runs, nearly doubled his previous high in home runs, finished second to Barry Bonds for most valuable player and led Philadelphia to the World Series.
After the season, he signed a multiyear contract worth almost $25 million, making him baseball's highest-paid leadoff batter.
Dykstra's lawyer, Daniel Petrocelli, told the Times the three-time All-Star ``absolutely denies'' the gambling allegation, calling it ``unsubstantiated'' and ``a fabricated story from a disgruntled partner.''
Petrocelli, citing Scott's criminal past, also said the steroid allegation was not ``reliable or credible,'' and called the former bodybuilder ``biased and aligned with Jones.'' In the past, Dykstra has denied using steroids.
/me hopes it is true, Dykstra was a little snot

PINIELLA UPSET WITH SOX ACE By the Associated Press TORONTO (AP) - A day after Boston pitcher Curt Schilling used the word "idiot" in criticizing Lou Piniella, the Tampa Bay manager held a team meeting and fired back. The Red Sox and Devil Rays tangled Sunday, with two-bench clearing scuffles and six ejections. The teams have had trouble in the past, too. "The problem is when you're playing a team with a manager who somehow forgot how the game is played, there's problems," Schilling said on a Boston radio station Tuesday. "This should have been over a little bit ago. Lou's trying to make his team be a bunch of tough guys, and the telling sign is when the players on that team are saying, 'This is why we lose 100 games a year, because this idiot makes us do stuff like this.' They (Rays players) said that on the field." /me wouldn't be surprised Piniella called a team meeting before Wednesday night's game at Toronto and issued a statement ripping Schilling. "Forget how the game is played? I have forgotten more baseball than this guy knows," Piniella said. "On the idiot subject, I'm appalled he would actually say something like that. I had a meeting with my team and to a man they denied it. He's questioning my character and integrity and that is wrong. He's never played for me, never really spoken to me, so he really doesn't know what I stand for. "If I were Curt, I would be really embarrassed at the cheap shot he took and get the story correct. I'll tell you I've always admired his pitching ability and competitiveness, but I can honestly tell you I've lost a lot of respect for him. I'm looking forward to talking to Curt myself and get this matter cleared up." Piniella later said he had Tampa Bay's traveling secretary call Boston's traveling secretary to try to get a hold of Schilling. Piniella said he had yet to hear from Schilling before the Devil Rays-Blue Jays game. "I was told Curt was going to call," Piniella said. "I'll bhe happy to pick up the phone if that's what it takes." Boston's game against Baltimore was rained out Wednesday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the Red Sox said Schilling will miss at least two weeks with a bone bruise on his surgically repaired right ankle. Schilling hurt himself while pitching Saturday at Tampa Bay on Saturday. Piniella and Devil Rays pitchers Lance Carter and Dewon Brazelton were ejected Sunday, as were Boston manager Terry Francona, starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo and outfielder Trot Nixon. The ejections in the seventh inning followed a sequence of inside pitches and the two scuffles. The teams have a history of games involving beanballs, including a fight between Pedro Martinez and Gerald Williams on Aug. 29, 2000. Tampa Bay starter Scott Kazmir and Piniella were ejected from a game last September after Kazmir hit Manny Ramirez and Kevin Millar in a span of four pitches. That came one inning after Arroyo hit two batters. Piniella disputed Schilling's claims in the statement. "He talks about making our players tough guys. Well, we do that quite well here but we don't do it by advocating fighting or throwing at opposing hitters. I don't know how many meetings I have had with my pitching coach on this subject," Piniella said. "The problem is, Curt has a short memory. He doesn't remember when he was a young pitcher. We have a lot of young pitchers here and they're trying to learn to pitch at the big league level. Our kids are learning to pitch inside and they have to do that to survive up here. Nobody here wants anyone hit, believe me," he said. After Tampa Bay's game against Toronto, Piniella went off on a TV reporter when he was asked about his dispute with Schilling. Asked if Tampa Bay's recent beanings are a reflection on him, Piniella said sternly: "Why is it going to reflect on me? I don't throw the balls. I don't throw them, I don't throw them and I don't order people getting hit, so it's not going to reflect on me."
