Oh yeah I forgot about that. RR sucks. End. It doesn't. Hi. Hi. It does. Bye. We can point out in this tournament only why it sucks horribly: 1) Justine can decide who will qualify between Mauresmo and Hingis. Stupid. 2) A player can qualify to the 1/2F after LOSING 2 TIMES. If you lose 2 times, then you should be out of the tournament. 3) It shouldn't matter the number of games and sets you win. Just because you win in 3 sets doesn't mean you're less good than someone who won in 2 sets. I miss the YEC in New York City. Same number of matches with more variety of players. And what about that pathetic double draw?

"I feel that after these three days I'm playing my best tennis again. I haven't played like this all season and these matches are the reasons why I came back... I've shown that I am capable of playing with the best and my aim is to continue like this at the start of next season. If I play more matches like this I can only get better." -- M. Hingis

"There are some things going on in my team which are a bit frustrating. I had thought that I had the right people around me but now they are not really fitting together and they are having some arguments. I changed three or four coaches and went through a difficult time during the summer and things are not very good at the moment. I want to put everything right and step into 2007 in a positive way." -- N. Petrova

She can. But she won't.
"2) A player can qualify to the 1/2F after LOSING 2 TIMES. If you lose 2 times, then you should be out of the tournament."
Who says that? Is it a law or something? Four players, the best two advance. Simple as that.
"3) It shouldn't matter the number of games and sets you win. Just because you win in 3 sets doesn't mean you're less good than someone who won in 2 sets."
It does. In this tournament. And all the competitors are aware of it. So try to win in 2 sets. Thanks.
"I miss the YEC in New York City. Same number of matches with more variety of players."
Me too, but only because of best of 5 finals and because Dominique played there sometimes.
"And what about that pathetic double draw?"
It is pathetic. But it's because of the scheduling, more matches wouldn't really fit in. And let's face it: it's women's doubles, where competition is horrible. It would be hard to find 8 deserving teams.

Petrova is quickly catching up on Kuznetsova as the player who makes up the most ludicrous excuses for her losses.

I'm beginning to see the uselessness of RR meself.
As far as I know, JHH has never tanked a tourny with so many ranking points, not even Fed Cup. The girl knows nothing of tanking. I know of more than a few she should have tanked, but if she ain't injured (and scared of being seriously injured) she'll fight till the fat lady gets slim.

JHH didn't try against sugiyama in 03 because she already made SF

She was tired, right (If I'm not mistaken she lost in the semis to Momo)? And Ai didn't beat her the last time they played.

I think it would be downright silly of her to go nuts today. She'll try to win, and she'll try to play well, but...come on. If it's 1-6 1-5 0-40, please. What's important to remember is that she is already guaranteed to play a much more important match tomorrow. Sacrificing a good future performance just to save a little face would be insane. And you all know Justine won't do that

Nevertheless, she leads 5-3*

And...she probably won't have to fight today, actually, because Amelie has to win to stay alive, and we all know she puts on her Chokomomo cape at times like these.

So, it's Hingis in the SF if Momo loses, no matter what?

Apparently the set math favors Hingis whether Momo loses in 2 or 3. I haven't looked, but that's the prevailing wisdom.

First set JHH. It means she wants to win the match. So she will fight till the end. So that means Hingis is in the 1/2F. And it means I still care about this tournament.

If Mauresmo, Hingis, and Petrova all have 1-2 records after today, we go to set percentage.
Hingis is 4-5 in sets (.444) and Petrova is 3-4 (.428) so Petrova is definitely out.
If Mauresmo loses in 3 she will be 3-5 (.375) so...yeah, she'll finish last in the group, right? No matter what?

It also means JHH and Mauresmo ARE ENNEMIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So if Hingis had not won that second set TB vs. JHH, it would probably be Petrova in the SF. Things like these do make RR seem odd, but eh, I can't think of a better solution. Aside from GUILLOTINE

bah Justine looks to be losing the 2nd set now despite being up a break twice. I don't expect her to win this. It's the same old story, Justine has the hardest time consolidating breaks against Amelie thanks to that wonky no-pace bunt of a return that the other top players just destroy.

She did have at least one BP in the 4-4 game too. But I think she'll be okay (famous last words).

yeah but she had points to go up 5-3 too and these grinding/slowly bleeding to death games have to favour Amelie.

Amelie was really on fire the little bit I saw; aces, rocket return winners. Tant pis! Now go rest up, Ju.

Yes, 62 in the third to AM. I'm not going to watch the Screecher. Her dress matches the court color, btw.
