I'm for removing ceremonies altogether... I bet most of the players hate them. They're told what to say anyway. I recall Sweta bitching at someone when they first went on camera in 2004, and she did the same this year. It's the same thing every time... thank your coach, thank the fans, thank the sponsors, congratulate your opponent, occasionally congratulate some other player from where the tourney is located, end. Anything more than that leads to awkwardness. Pierce/Chang thanking God for every single in this world. Non-English speakers struggling with the language, and possibly saying something silly (like Justine did at a Dubai final). Or, even Demented's cute 9/11 thing... which the crowd first CHEERED for. Followed by about 15 seconds of silence since CBS just wanted that final to go away forever. And Sweta had to awkwardly follow that.

I used to enjoy Wimbledon ceremony when there was no interview at all. I like the idea of players walking around the court with their trophees, and not hearing them.

Okay. I really think, if I think and go slowly, I can make sense of things.
I didn't see any of the matches. I was working hard on Frday (ass I had hoped for) and tonight I saw Tosh. I lvoe The Tosh. Anyway when I returned I saw Justine had won,. and then people brought sangria to m house and i celebrated in my mind. Frotuynatewly my life was happy prior to the Justine victory, and thus my happiness does not depend upon her. But I am happy because I know she is happy, This is a pivotal victory in her careeer. Because of things that I will better express at some othe point. I also miss posting here and insoite of my determinatioin to avoiud message boards (and I have been steadfastly avoidingn WTA WOdls ) I miss my friend (all 4 of yyou) so I will express thigns here.

But what a spectacular comeback you made! I hope you're not feeling too rough this morning. Or this afternoon, or whenever you get up. And you never need to avoid this board, only wtaworld General Messages for a few weeks every time JH wins a Slam. Or any tournament. Or a match! Ali, I have to say, your job is great. You get to watch tennis on tv at work? Becca needs a job like yours!

I wonder why no one notices that Serena has won no Slams outside Australia since 2002, or Venus outside the UK since 2001, if I'm not mistaken. While the length of time since JH's last non-clay Slam was really harped on.

Okay, 2003. So it's still four years since Serena won a Slam outside Australia. Same length of time that Justine had not won a Slam outside France. But Venus not winning any except Wimby for 6 years? You'd think some commentator would remark on that.

OTOH, when you do keep winning some Slam despite a low ranking, that's always going to be the bigger news than the Slams you DON'T win. It makes sense, but when it comes time for one of those 4-6-year not-won Slams, I think it's worth a mention at least.

"After Wimbledon everyone said it would be difficult for her," Rodriguez said. "But Wimbledon is the best thing to happen to her this year because she came back to reality. She said, 'I'm a human and I'm hurt and sometimes humans fail.' When you expect that and you are No. 1 and everyone thinks you can win and you can't, it's hard to face it. She's very honest with herself. That's the most important quality she has: She knows what she does wrong and right. I said, 'Don't make the same mistake twice'."

Ironically, it's Justine's consistent excellence which means that her failures outside of RG were remarked on. She's been a top favourite for every Slam she's entered for years, and her strike rate has been surprisingly low. She really should have a couple, probably three more non-clay Slams than she does. The infamous AO, last year's USO...they got away from her.
Whereas, because each Williams-won Slam since '03 has been such a fluke out of nowhere, they've gotten the GRAND COMEBACK treatment each time.
