No. They need to (i) play and (ii) win more. That's not true anymore. Tournaments played: Ivanovic 16 Jankovic 22 Serena 15 Kuznetsova 18 Sharapova 13 Safina 21 Venus 13 Then everyone else is over 20. So, playing more wouldn't really help to avoid this. The problem is that Venus Ebone Starr Williams sucks outside of Wimbledon.

Actual lead question from Wertheim mailbag:
I heard you talking on television about Venus and Serena playing each other so early in the tournament. You stated that the draws could not be rigged. My question is, Why not? Simply putting them on other sides of the draw would not give either an unfair advantage. It would just mean they wouldn't meet until the final, which would be better for the whole sport. -- Monty, Toronto
GNNNGHHHHHHHH. I can deal with idiots who know nothing asking the question, but why it's actually being given the time of day by a professional tennis journalist I have no idea.
Also, since when did people enjoy their terrible matches.

That is the kind of thing Dawn Marie would propose. If women's tennis is so weak, then how come REAL TOP 4 SEED VENUS WILLIAMS, who has played a reasonably full schedule, can't be ranked there on her own merit, even holding a Slam title?

With Queen Masha and Mighty Justine missing, Venus Williams and Serena Williams should be co number one seeds, in my opinion. No one knows who Ana Ivanovic or Jelena Jankovic ARE in New York City or the United States, do they? Plus, it would make much more sense from a marketing point of view, for the Women's Tennis Association WTA tour.

the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour* Holding a Sony Ericsson cell phone made by Sony Ericsson who sponsors the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. - Every poor girl forced to be on the WTA Tour whatever weekly show. I really hate women's tennis. And now for something completely different, says sonyericssonwtatour.com (http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/1/newsroom/stories/?ContentID=2514). What do you think of the Tour's main sponsors?
Alizé Cornet: "I have a very good cell phone from Sony Ericsson. I still live with my parents so I don't need any appliances, but my brother has a new flat and has Whirlpool, and it's a very good brand. When I move out I'll get them too!"
Katarina Srebotnik: "All my life I had Ericsson phones, and when it became Sony Ericsson I switched to Sony Ericsson. It's my favorite phone company. I'm very excited it's the title sponsor for the Tour. Whirlpool is also a great sponsor."
Ai Sugiyama: "Sony Ericsson is the biggest sponsor in women's sports. We're getting much better things than we used to, like prize money. It's not a huge jump each year but it's gradually getting higher and higher. I think we're up 40% from what we got in 2004, which is great. We have to appreciate what we have right now; it's incredible compared to what we got when Billie Jean started it all. But this is a job, and we have to take it seriously. We have to work for the sponsors and the Tour as well, like doing interviews and appearances when they need us. All of us - the players, the Tour, the sponsors, the fans - have to work together and continue to make our sport a success."
Patty Schnyder: "I have Sony Ericsson phones, which is really cool. I also have a Whirlpool microwave. I think the Tour has some great sponsors."
Edina Gallovits: "I use Sony Ericsson phones. The camera phone is awesome. I don't have any Whirlpool stuff but when I get a house I'll give them a call."
Vera Zvonareva: "I have a nice washing machine and dryer from Whirlpool back in Moscow. I really like them! My Sony Ericsson phones are great, too."
Dominika Cibulkova: "Sony Ericsson gives us phones, two per year actually. I use mine all the time. It's perfect!"
Jelena Jankovic: "Our sponsors are great. I use a lot of their products, especially Sony Ericsson phones. I have lots of them. It's great technology, great designs. I have a washing machine and dryer from Whirlpool and they work really well."
Elena Dementieva: "I use Sony Ericsson phones and really like it. We get a lot of them, brand new ones. It's always fun to have something new."To be fair, some of the other questions are mildly entertaining.

LOLZ at the washing machine plugs.
Yep, RKJ! She's so cute. I was actually going over Jankovic's career results, and I saw the College Park '03 Challenger in there, which is the first time I had seen her. That's also where I discovered Liouda Skavronskgiant, RKJ, Angie Haynes and her crazy father (tried to get me to write about them for the UMCP paper), Sarah Taylor (who was the top seed and someone I had COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN), and Doo Wah Ditty.
Brought back memories of a couple of people who disappeared too: the ridiculously awesome zaftig ginger kid Lauren Kalvaria (ran everything down to hilariously beat Haynes) I knew left the Tour. But what happened to Gaby Lastra? She had a fine 2003, culminating in qualifiying for the US Open! She got blown out by Coetzer -- and that's the last match she played...

www.usopen.org/en_US/news/articles/2008-09-02/200809021220405496347.htmlMurray – Del Potro: Bad Blood? Tuesday, September 2, 2008 By Neil Schlecht In a promotional bit before the start of the US Open, boxing promoter Don King staged a pugilistic-styled “Grapple in the Apple” weigh-in of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Perhaps those two mild-mannered players weren’t the best choice for the event. Wednesday afternoon’s matchup of sixth-seeded Scot Andy Murray, 21, and the 19-year-old Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, who’s riding a 23-match win streak, comes against the backdrop of a supposed feud that has piqued interest in an already anticipated encounter. Del Potro and Murray, 16 months apart, have known each other since junior days, but it was their May match in Rome earlier this year that has the two of them, and others privy to their playing history, talking. In a testy match, Del Potro allegedly launched a ball at the feisty Murray’s head. At a changeover at 5-4 in the second set, the two engaged in sideline trash-talking that the umpire tried in vain to extinguish. The sit-down squabble began with Murray complaining about the attempted beaning, to which Del Potro retorted, somewhat elliptically: “You and your mother, the same always.” That set Murray off, incensed that the Argentine would dare invoke his mum: “If you ever speak about my mum again!” The umpire pleaded with both players “to save it ‘til later.” “That is unacceptable!” cried Murray. Del Potro sat stoically, staring straight ahead. Murray was asked whether there was some unfinished business between the two in his press conference, after defeating Stanislas Wawrinka to advance to the match against the 6-foot-6 Del Potro. “I haven't spoken to him since, so whether there is or not, for me it's another tennis match,” said Murray. “When you get on the court you've got to put your emotions aside and get the job done. "I've known him since we were really young," continued Murray. "I wasn't great friends with him before. I don't need to be friends with him now." Murray won that first and only bout in a TKO. After Murray split sets with the big Argentine, Del Potro was forced to retire with an injury. Looking forward to today's showdown, Murray said, “Whether I like Del Potro or not really doesn't make any difference. When you get on the tennis court it's another match, and you've got to win.” For the curious, there’s charming YouTube video evidence of the incident (complete with amusing Eurosport commentators advocating for a throwdown then and there): www.youtube.com/watch?v=muM-UQc_TnkRound 2 between these two combatants – technically the quarterfinals – is coming up Wednesday on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Be there!
