Day 10.

Post by Calico on Sept 3, 2008 23:07:41 GMT -5
Fish leads 5-2 in the first set and has 9 aces in only 4 service games. And Fish won't wilt in the heat and humidity of New York weather during a tough night match like he would in a tough daytime match played in oppresive heat. It's hard to believe Fish is playing this well. But he is. Nadal needs to step it up to win this match. Fish won't just make mistakes and give it to him.

A thoroughly repulsive first set. I have to go to work disgusted now I was wondering where you were. Nadal leads the second set 3-0 and he is looking like himself again. The only thing that can stop him in this match is huge serving and outstanding net play by Fish.

Nadal won the second set 6-1 and I'm going to bed. It will be interesting to find out if Fish can recapture his first set form.

A little scratchy there at the end, but at least Nadal has a set to play with.

Is Fish a good guy? Do you have an anecdote to provide for this? I have no reason to think bad of him as a person, I just prefer him not to be on court beating people that I like.
Nadal losing to Murray is way less horrible than losing to Fish would have been.

Some guy yelled "MARDEEEE" during one of Rafa's second service motions in the last couple of games. The point could have easily been played out, but Mardy stopped the point immediately and allowed the point to start over, and didn't contest the decision to give Rafa the first serve. Moreover, he looked chastened, and this also allowed security to escort the moron out and not further disrupt the match.

He was probably doing that more because it distracted him, and less because he's a good sport. But yeah, that was a good thing to do. The first time I saw Fish play was years ago, and I couldn't get over what a whiney bitch he was being. Has he improved in that regard?

I didn't watch the whole thing, but he seemed okay. He got down on himself fairly quickly, but no tantrums I saw.
And yes, I'm sure 2500 people bitching out some doofus during the point would have been troublesome for both players.

Spanish posters on MTF say that Nadal has now clinched the year end number 1. Not sure if this is true, and even if it isn't, it's only a matter of time... but still. Yay.

So, the Nadal/Fish joust went exactly as we all that it would, except the cat.
Nadal over Murray, I think. It'll be interesting to see what kind of game plan Murray comes up with, though.

With Nadal, it seems really natural to talk about his potential threats, and players who could beat him, before the tournament starts. Then you get to the match itself and you just can't see how it could happen in actual real life. As in the JesusFed years, the five-set format really helps...you can imagine Nadal blowing for a set, or an opponent being on fire for a set, maybe even two. Three, not so much.
