I was thinking the same thing about Kerr's outfit. Hey chunky US women golfer's: Before you come out on the course, LOOK IN THE MIRROR!!! Front AND back! Stop wearing cute little form-fitting tops unless you've got a nice slim form, because they make you look awful. Kerr would not look so bad in something a little looser, and without those tiny, tight sleevelets accentuating her chunky arms.
Anyway, it was a fun finish with that cool-looking Ji birdie-ing the final hole, in defiance of the day's Choke-the-most theme. Johnny Miller turned out to be right: one player would hit a birdie on one of the last couple of holes, and that player would win.
Speaking of Miller, I never cared for him as Mr. Mormon Golfer, but he's a fantastic commentator. One good thing the LPGA has going for this tournament, at least.

One of my students told me that if the Korean lady golfers were "more beautiful, like Sharapova" that women's golf would be just dandy, but that she didn't think Korean women were that beautiful. I disagreed, pointing out that female golfers are generally less attractive than tennis players; that it had little to do with how attractive Korean women were in general, golf just tends to attract the uglies. She eventually came around to my way of thinking.
That said, I don't think Ji Eun Hee is an ugger.

For all the Korean women on tour, one of my classes was able to name just one of them. Anybody want to guess?

One more thought - golf is ridiculously expensive here. Very few of my students actually play golf. There are places were you can play simulated golf, similar to a video game, but to play a round on a real course costs anywhere from an eighth to a quarter of my pay check. I don't even know a single Korean woman who plays golf, and my students claim that they don't either. It's still very much a sport for wealthy men here. It confuses me that so many Korean women make it professionally. One of my students suggested that most of those who do came from rich parents and were educated in the USA. I have no idea if that's true, though I doubt that English would be such an issue if it were.

For all the Korean women on tour, one of my classes was able to name just one of them. Anybody want to guess? Se Ri Pak? Grace Park? I think Grace P. is beautiful, by the way. There are just as many cute Koreans on the tour as cute anyone-elses -- in other words, not a lot, but some. Some, like Grace, did attend a US university, but no, the ones who don't speak any English aside from "Thank you," like Eun Hee Ji yesterday, couldn't have been educated here, unless they attended a Korean school, hid out in some all-Korean ghetto the entire time, and never turned on a tv.

It's not that most of the Koreans are ugly, this Ji certainly isn't. But, put some effort into your appearance, especially for the biggest day in your sport's season. Like it or not, sports is a business.

Moving to America so that you can hang out with Koreans, eat Korean food, and go to Korean private schools is a very Korean thing to do. It's possible.
It was Se Ri Park they named, or however it is she spells her name in English.

Yeah, Se Ri Pak was the pioneer for the mysterious Korean golfing hordes.
Maybe they all come from a wealthy region of Korea far away from Busan?

TV coverage here made it sound like Se Ri was the biggest sports star ever in Korea. Lies.

I don't know who their biggest sports star is. Probably a baseball player. Maybe that guy who plays for Manchester United. Or Yu Na Kim.

So Michelle Wie finally won a tournament this weekend! I just learned this now. Good for her. And great for the LPGA; might help them get sponsors next year instead of having to go bankrupt.
I still miss Annika, though. At least, when I think about women's golf, which is about 30 minutes per year, I miss Annika.

Wie winning a November tournament in Mexico probably won't change anything. But, good to see her career is getting back on track.

Retired at 28? Hmm.
The LPGA should move to Coria.

:"Earlier this year Ochoa said she planned on playing four more seasons but would retire when it came time to start a family."
Hmm, I think she's preggers.
The ever-worsening nightmare that the LPGA is caught in makes the WTA look almost healthy. The LPGA would kill for a Wozniacki right now!

The LPGA has a good, young, cute USian with Paula Creamer. And Wie is still around although her star has faded. They're in better shape concerning star power than tennis, especially if the Williams ever go away. There just isn't a market for women's golf here. Tennis has the advantage of exposing both sexes at slams and scheduling important matches at specific times. Women's golf must always compete with the men's game outside of the rare like US Open week when the men are playing the Quad Podunk Open. They can't win.

This is Petr's girl, yes? sports.yahoo.com/golf/pga/news;_ylt=AhCRshUYWVlezMm_xr4Y64kogsUF?slug=ap-uswomensamateurCHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Danielle Kang’s 4-foot putt on the next-to-last hole in the U.S. Women’s Amateur on Sunday gave her a 2 and 1 match-play victory against Jessica Korda.
Kang had led deep into the second round during the final at Charlotte Country Club. But she conceded the lead when she ran into bunker trouble on the 30th hole. Korda took the lead for the first time when her third shot reached within a foot and Kang’s fourth shot stuck in the rough.
Kang squared the match three holes later with a 5-foot par putt. She retook the lead on the 34th hole, when she converted for par and Korda missed a putt from at least 10 feet.
Kang and Korda, each 17, were vying for their first U.S. Amateur title. Sunday marked the third straight match in which Kang, the women’s amateur medalist a year ago, fended off a rally during the final three holes.

(I'm a little late in seeing this post.) Meanwhile, the LPGA's latest #1 player is this kid from Taiwan: www.lpga.com/content_1.aspx?pid=27330&mid=2Never heard of her. But I might start following golf more now that I've got this better tv to watch it on, and then maybe I'll hear about any young Lendls, Kordas, or Samprases coming along the pike.

Good news for the struggling LPGA: 5 of the top 6 finishers, including the champion, in the first major of 2011 were USians.
Bad news: Wie and Pressel both looked so bad yesterday that they set back the sport 10 years. Yet they both ended in the top 6! What does that say for the quality of the product right now. Still, Stacy Lewis had guts and game yesterday, and so the final pairing was mighty fun to watch.

Further bad news: The final round was on at like 8pm on Golf Channel, so nobody watched it. It says a lot that none of the big networks bother showing a major on a dead Sunday like this one.
Also, Yani Tseng and Jiyai Shin battling for #1 is the worst nightmare the LPGA could imagine. And they're both 22.

What, that great Miami men's final was on and you call it a "dead Sunday"? And baseball season just started! And the women's hoops final 4 was on last night. Which unfortunately I forgot all about. I know; it's terrible they can't even get network coverage for their majors any more. The result was hard to find on sports web sites today, because if it's not on a network, it must not be important. I think Tseng will be an okay #1; she speaks English pretty well now and is likeable, happy to talk to fans, etc. I've never even heard of Shin, but this is the first weekend, maybe ever, that I stuck with a women's golf tournament, for all its 4 days. At least on and off.
