Clijsters, Henin-Hardenne to lead Belgium in Fed Cup Reuters
Kim Clisters and Justine Henin-Hardenne boosted Belgium's chances of winning a second Fed Cup title when they were named in the squad on Wednesday for the semifinal against a weakened United States.
The Americans will be hoping Jamea Jackson can reproduce the heroics that helped them knock out Germany 3-2 in the previous round because sisters Venus and Serena Williams as well as Lindsay Davenport are unavailable for the tie.
Jackson won both her singles matches in her competition debut in the first round to lead the United States into the last four.
World No. 2 Clijsters and third-ranked Henin-Hardenne helped Belgium win their maiden title in the team competition in 2001.
They will host the Americans on an indoor hard court in Ostend, Belgium, from July 15 to 16.
World No. 27 Anabel Medina Garrigues will spearhead the Spanish team when it hosts Italy in the other semifinal in Zaragoza. Francesca Schiavone will lead the Italian challenge.
The winners of the two ties will contest the final in September.

It's funny, yet true.
How many of us thought the US had a chance in hell of winning in Germany.

Yeah, but they have no chance in Belgium, as opposed to, like, the 1 win out of the 100 that they happened to get last time in Germany.

All it would take is Kim or Justine pulling out before or during their 1st match, and the US looks pretty good. Odds of that happening aren't too bad.

I think it's crazy if Justine does play. 2 wks RG, 1 wk off, 1 wk Eastbourne, now Wimby? It's too much.
Though if she loses today, she should play.

Henin-Hardenne withdraws from Belgian team to face U.S. July 12, 2006
BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Wimbledon runner-up Justine Henin-Hardenne has withdrawn from Belgium's team for this weekend's Fed Cup semifinal against the United States.
Team captain Carl Maes said Wednesday that Henin-Hardenne was exhausted after her three-set loss to Amelie Mauresmo in Saturday's final.
"Justine doesn't feel the freshness that will be required in her attacking game to be on court," according to a statement on her Web site, adding she would attend the matches to support the team.
The best-of-five series will take place this weekend at Ostend on an indoor hard court. The U.S. team consists of Jill Craybas, Jamea Jackson, Vania King and Mashona Washington. The winner will face Italy or Spain in the Sept. 16-17 Fed Cup final.
After the Wimbledon final loss, the third-ranked Henin-Hardenne said she might pull out. Leslie Butkiewicz will replace Henin-Hardenne, who has played five tournaments in six weeks.
The Belgian team features second-ranked Kim Clijsters, plus Kirsten Flipkens and Caroline Maes. Belgium's only Fed Cup championship came in 2001, the last year Henin-Hardenne and Clijsters both were on the team

I was gonna root for the USA even if Justine did play. As long as the USA has no williams on the team, they get my support

Flipkens comes through for Belgium Despite losing the first set Kirsten Flipkens held her nerve against USA's No. 1 Jill Craybas to come through in three sets and earn her country its first point in their World Group Semifinal tie. Flipkens stormed to a 4-1 lead in the third set but lost the following two games. Flipkens held on and was able to break Craybas' serve at 4-5 to secure victory. The final score 57 62 64 in two hours and 18 minutes. Jackson leading Clijsters 6-4

Flavia Pennetta was Italy' s heroine as they reached the final of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas for the first time in their history. The Italian No. 2 defeated Lourdes Dominguez-Lino 62 64 to score her second singles victory of the weekend in the semifinal tie against Spain in Zaragoza. Earlier Anabel Medina Garrigues has kept alive Spanish hopes by defeating Italian No. 1 Francesca Schiavone 62 62 in just 61 minutes. The final doubles rubber was cancelled due to extreme heat.
