I enjoyed the first set until the final game where Wozzy blanked out. I guess even PoleDanes can crack under pressure. But I don't have it in me to watch her crack more in set 2, so am off to bed. See you at the men's final tomorrow.

lol @ Women's tennis.
I agree with Janie that Kim winning now is far less offensive to me than it would have been 5 years ago. Her fantards on wtaworld all still need to die, though.
As for the men's tournament - pretty sick point from Fed that somebody posted, heh. Aside from that, bleh. Whatever. We basically have a nonfinal now, so far as I my not-having-seen-DP-all-week opinion goes. I will be sleeping and pass on that "fun"; Fed winning number 800 is tolerable if it's not a foregone conclusion.

Kim is going to have an Agassi-esque second career!
In fairness, if she hadn't been injured so often, she'd likely have gotten #2 and even #1 sooner. I like this result, actually. Kim's talent and athleticism are such that one Slam was a major underachievement.
It's really quite amazing how her third tournament back she produced the exact result which was so difficult throughout her first career: beating both Sisters and not choking the title match.

Post by janie on Sept 14, 2009 7:25:57 GMT -5
I think Kim's stellar reappearance is good for women's tennis, because she's playing so well she's raising the bar again, and we all know how pathetically low that bar has been lately. Even Serena, who was playing really well at this event, is going to have to step it up, which is always a good thing. What I want for this sport is the end of the era of players being able to BS their way to Slam titles, and Kim's already helping out there.
Not that I'm going to be rooting for her, though. Except when she plays Serena.
I wonder what this tournament means for those Russians, though. In the absence of a new crop of young talent I assume they'll hang on to their bloated rankings, but the US Open really killed the idea that most of them are going to be winning multiple Slams, or in some cases, even one.
I look forward to a serious overhaul of the top 10, but it's going to take more than just Kim and Woz to accomplish that.

I am not sure I consider Kim's title in and of itself as an indictment of distaff tennis. She was always a slam contender when she was at her peak. And, you know what, I think her game, both technically and mentally, are actually more impressive now than they were pre-baby.

Didn't see a whole Kim match during this tournament, but in the sets I did see, she was a) noticeably sloppier than I remember, but b) despite obvious nerves, managed to control them very effectively at key points which could have turned both the Venus and Wozniacki matches around.

Sjengster, I have to say I am basing this only on her win over Silliams. So it seems to me anyway -- Very crisp hitting, maybe more power, seemed on the defensive less and really did a great job of controlling the centre of the court. I'd be curious to know if she is hitting the ball harder or positioning herself closer to the baseline, or whether it's same old same old. She's certainly no worse.
I admit that if I had seen other matches I might have noticed more sloppiness. But in my book she's always been a sloppy player, in the senst that she played a lot of careless points, or else she would have won more majors. Maybe what I am talking about is a function of stronger nerves.
Anyway, I guess I am saying she's no worse, and arguably better, than she was.

Moonballing. What do I win? Caroline wasn't really Pushniacking for most of the final anyway. I was quite impressed, and could almost like her if she didn't wear so much make up. I was impressed, too. If Sunny's game in that final was what everyone calls pushing, then bring it on; I found it to be a refreshing change from mindless bashing. And I do kind of like her, despite her nickname and the makeup. I like her because she didn't totally cave in from nerves, and she not only played with a game plan but was successful at executing said plan pretty frequently, despite the huge occasion, far huger than she's ever been part of before. So, good for her. What's wrong with having one ASV in the top 10 anyway.

Sunshine is still a pusher because she doesn't try to hit winners, or even set them up. But, she hits with decent pace and always tries to hit deep.
Kim looks the same as she did before. Still a great defender. Ugly FH she'll spray a bunch. Good BH UTL. I don't think she's better, or any worse. Although, maybe a bit slower.
This tournament went very well for her. 4R against Venus and QF against Lee Na were TERRIBLE matches. If Kim plays any in-form player in those, good chance she loses. Then, Serena had a bad serving day... and decent Serena beats Kim 99/100. Then, Pushniacki. I think Kim's level now is Top 5-ish and thus a competitor at slams. Things went right, and she took advantage.

So, good for her. What's wrong with having one ASV in the top 10 anyway. It was the same old shit from Pushniacki. The game of most pushers doesn't come unstuck in high stakes matches because they play mostly on autopilot, so I'm not surprised that her performance was adequate for her own (pedestrian) standards. Kim played shite. She seemed mentally and physically spent, with piss poor shot selection at times, and a constant indecision about which tactics to use. Bottom line I'm angry at Kim for letting Pushniacki look like a legitimate Slam contender. Good that such a good player got rewarded with a second Slam, but that's about it.
