Oh you guys! You're terrible with updating what's going on! So I was sitting there in the cinema, watching livescores, and this 6-6 in the 1st has been lasting forever. I realize that no tie-break can be THAT epic, so I'm coming here. Off course I learned immediately that Rafa was CHEATING!! poor Pony with his medical break, and then he was so evil and won the freaking set! I'm happy about that off course. Then could barely figure out that despite Rafa's continued CHEATING!! through his fake injury, St. Pony wins the 2nd! Unfortunately it's time for Del Pony to get injured, so I expected the same level of outrage being lavelled at him! After all he was on the break of retiring as far as I understood and then continued winning amazing points? And now I see Rafa won the 3rd, so YAY! And I'd be totally Ok with JMDP winning this one, because he is my 2nd fave right now, but I know he would lose crappily to Murray after that, so Murray would crap his way into another final when he will lose again crappily by winning 5 games in total against Djoko/Fed. We've seen it all before. (Off course Rafa can lose crappily against Murray as well, but at least there's a chance he won't. )

Oh, and my belated happiness on Venus also losing today. That's the only "upset" that I was pretty confident about for today. I know Tzveti can beat her again, since it's nothing new! I love the same scoreline as last year! Now we only need Sharapova to lose! And it'll be perfect like RG!

That Pony's forehand! I'm still so happy to see him back! Rafa, please hold now and then once again!

Rafa held for 5-3, hitting a bunch of winners! Something that I like to see!

Rafa wins 6-4 in the 4th! Wow, how much taller JMDP is!
Rafa's hair is very unfortunately looking in this tourny.

That was a good match for Rafa and Delpo. Rafa survived his first real test, whereas Delpo has now streched Nole and Rafa to four sets in Slams. Maybe he starts winning some of these in a year or so?

I did notice the hair, though. Anyway, I'm too lazy to go back - did everybody complain when Pony bounced back from a CAREERENDINGINJURY midmatch to play fairly decently, or is it only a problem with Rafa does it? Huzzah, winning.

I think he'll start winning them at US Open or maybe even at one of the lead-up tournies with 2 out of 3. At the US Open Nole & Rafa may up their level slightly, but DelPo is looking good even now.

Yeah, I think it's clear now that Delpo's level is at least The Real No 5.

JMDP. Ah well, an acceptable scoreline and things look great for the USO. (barring career-ending injury)

Stat that I hadn't realised until today but that is totally unsurprising: Number of Wozniacki's top 10 wins at Slams, ever: 2

[...]Bartoli, 26, came into this fortnight on a roll, having won her first career title on grass at Eastbourne and reached her first ever semi-final at Roland Garros. At No.9 her ranking is already equal to its career best, and will improve further next Monday. STOP. That isn't even CLOSE to being correct. A loss to Lisicki and a Kvitova title (neither outlandish) keeps her there. I didn't even KNOW what a privilege log was before today.

Seriously, my favorite/most stroke-inducing thing about Wimbledon is when British people who don't follow the sport 50 weeks out of the year become experts.

The sad thing is that Alexandra Willis isn't even one of those, she's a full-time tennis hack

Probably even British full-time tennis hacks don't follow SEWTA outside the slam finals.

The other sad thing about the Alexandra Willis sentence is that she would only have needed to follow SEWTA since last week to get it right.

I know first-hand that many tennis writers out there are total hacks. The general rule in sports writing is that it's who you blow, not what you know.

Also, with sports writing for mainstream publications you really don't get much leeway to say what needs to be said. Your job depends on access to players, because that's what a newspaper's readership cares about, not technical analysis or rankings nerdery or detailed match reports. You need to get exclusive interviews that can run at the right time.
And there's much less incentive for top players to consent to interviews if they don't feel like it...or if the hack in question has pissed them off. It's not like they're a pop star who has to do the promo rounds to sell their new album.
It's funny seeing the journalists kiss players' asses on Twitter.

Pironkova also beat Venus at the 2006 Australian Open, yet somehow she clearly didn't make much of an impression on Mom.
"I don't even remember her playing her before. They said she lost to her here a year ago," Price said. "I didn't remember the girl. I'll remember her this time."
"It's kind of inexplicable why I manage to play some of my worst tennis against her," Venus said. "It's not like I'm intimidated at all by anybody on tour."
"She should always play like this, and she would be in the top five, at minimum," Serena said. "It's like, 'Wow, where is this player throughout the rest of the year?'"

Serena said that about CAKE, and...she's right.
I'm OK with Oracene saying these things because she's so obviously long-suffering and doesn't have the slightest interest in the game, and is only dragged around the globe and forced to watch it because of her daughters.
Hey Venus, if you really think it's inexplicable then, you know, that's exactly why you keep losing to her. Maybe you should ask literally everyone else on tour for tips, they all seem to have figured Tsveti's oddball game out pretty well.

It's not that which is the issue. The issue is that Rafa hurt himself on one point in the 6-5 game but continued playing. Then, upon losing the game (where he had setpoint to close the set), he walked to chair for the trainer. At 6-6. When there isn't a changeover. It should have been tough luck for him and he could see the trainer at the end of the set. When Del Potro fell, he saw the trainer immediately. He didn't hop up, play a few more points, and then walk to the chair. I'm not saying Rafa's injury was fake, no. I just don't think he should have been able to call the trainer at that moment. As far as I know, it's against the rules.

Or you think the rules say you're not allowed to call for the trainer if, for example, you fell, then played another point, but feel like the pain is too much, but it doesn't matter because you stood up and "continued"? How could they write this in the rule book? And didn't Safin call for an injury time-out for a blister when he was down a match point? A match he won later IIRC.

Did he? If it wasn't your favorite player, would you still think the above? You can call for the trainer any time. Receiving treatment outside of the changeovers is rare, it usually requires some sort of visible injury like the fall Del Potro took. Prove me wrong if you like - I'm not positively sure the rule book says you can't do that. I have a suspicion that the umpire allowed Rafa to do something that he probably would not have allowed most other players to do. I think he got some star treatment but that isn't uncommon or exclusive to him.
