Oh god, I watched the all-Sema QF in Kofu and it was crazy. There was no sisterly love, just plain rude behavior from Erika and a very unprofessional tank by Yurika in the last 2 games of the third set. The last point of the match Yurika dictated the point with some crazy half-assed low-percentage shots and when Erika just barely managed to hit a defensive lob that landed right behind the net, all Yurika would have to do was to smash it in the open court but instead let it bounce twice and went straight to the umpire, shaked hands and went to the chairs. None of the girls even tried to meet at the net to shake hands - just straight to the umpire, ignoring one another. Erika acted like a total brat, screaming loudly throughout the match and on the most horrible UEs by Yurika, who was visually upset by her sister's antics. Erika won 60 46 63 It was great trashy fun. Amazing. If the Williams finals had been like this no one would have ever complained. Why on earth would Yurika do that at the end? She was competing hard enough to win a set, she wasn't that far down and you'd think that given the hostility she wouldn't want to hand little sis a win.

It's an enigma! Women's tennis could sure use more enigmas. Please get good, Sema sisters!

Wow! Talk about a long drought after having a top player. Brazil rarely has players even in the top 250 on the distaff side, and that's been going on forever. They went from Maria Bueno to being in danger of getting passed by Armenia? Poor Guga/BuenoLand.

That's largely because Brazil still lags behind with girls playing sports. They don't even support their soccer girls well.

Why on earth would Yurika do that at the end? She was competing hard enough to win a set, she wasn't that far down and you'd think that given the hostility she wouldn't want to hand little sis a win. At 3-3 in the third she got broken and lost the next 8 points. Most of them were purposely netted returns on Erika's service. On her own service game she hit 2 ugly DFs, missed by a mile and a wild forehand in the back fence. To me it looked as if she was crying, wiping her eyes. Also, she was probably just angry and frustrated and wanted to leave the court as soon as possible. That last point Yurika was hitting groundstrokes from the middle of the court while already on the way to the umpire. And that final way short slice lob landed just a metre away from her, but she just left it there. It looked so bizzare. Funny thing is that they usually play doubles together. I suppose they function better when standing on the same side of the court.

Ha! Apparently so! As for Brazil, I guess the teenaged girls are too busy getting started on their plastic surgery to be interested in sports. But you're right, a sports culture for women is probably not supported enough. I keep thinking that all it would take would be ONE elite female player to liven up the sport in all of Latin America. They desperately need another Sabatini and the best they can do is an occasional Jorgi Cravero who, as soon as she nears the top 100, immediately falls like a stone.

Chang Kai-Chen won the Kofu $50k Was it two years ago at this time she was beating the World No 1? She has been so bad since. Maybe this is the start of a revival. Good to see she beat Minella, who seems to attract a Hidden World version of "Makiri"-esque pretty-girl fanboy at TennisForum.

It didn't seem like the first Sabatini livened up the sport down there. What age did she come to the states, anyway?

Good to see she beat Minella, who seems to attract a Hidden World version of "Makiri"-esque pretty-girl fanboy at TennisForum. Understandable as she is outstandingly pretty though. And at least she actually looks like a fully grown woman, unlike Kirilenko, who still looks like a 12 y.o.. Minella suffered a lot from injuries back in 2006-2007; since then, she's actually closer to the "limited but hard working" end of the talent spectrum. And she was never ranked high enough to acquire any diva antics. Interesting first time matchup in the 1R of the Troy 50K: Micaela Carolina vs Tamaryn Hendler. Hendler seemed to be sort of Nick B.'s backup project when Micaela Carolina was his biggest prospect. Yet back then they never played against each other at any level of competition. Their careers took divergent paths, Micaela Carolina screeching her way to the top 100 before tailspinning, Hendler mostly treading water. Odd that they'll finally get to play each other when it's Hendler who is (sort of - mostly cheap points from weak Asian 25Ks) on the rise.

Restless Julia! In the Indon $25K final, Iryna BREMOND (FRA) (1) defeated Ayu-Fani DAMAYANTI (INA) (4) 6-2 6-3 . Nice tournament for AFD though, as she routined Hendler very impressively. Victoria Duval reached the semis of a $10K in Virginia, but lost to the eventual champ, 17yo WC Danielle Rose COLLINS. Collins has done well in USTA jr events and is a Nick B girl.

Grace Min beating Thundah would be fun! Good luck to Chi Chi. Kiki Bertens knocked off top seed Pous to advance to the Joue-les-Tours quarters. Janie fave Akgul the Giant is also in the last 8. Restless Julia's globetrotting finally caught up with her. 1st Round, St.Cugat $25K Tereza MRDEZA (CRO) defeated Julia COHEN (USA) (4) 6-4 4-1 Retired Bianca Botto has reached the semis there after a 6-4 6-3 upset win over Candle Head.

Go Thunder! Did Bovine beat Lepchenko? (She totally should.) No, she shouldn't, and she didn't, because she is a Shadow of Her Former Self. Her former self would have won. The current edition won 7 games from the very confident Kansas City champion (last week), which, these days, is not bad for Elbo the 50K qualifier.

This indoor hard season was her huge point grab from last year when she was practically unbeatable. Which is why her ranking is currently DYING.

The Q draw in Limoges is pretty strong - but the most notable change in that draw is that our New Caledonian hope Anaeve Pain is now playing under the French flag. I know New Caledonia belongs to France, but ever since juniors Pain has been recognized as (CAL). Her name in the draw now doesn't look exotic enough for me to keep cheering for her.
