Heh, Bolt jogging through the finish line AGAIN. It's kind of his thing now, you'd miss it even if he set a WR instead.

Bolt is the single most annoying thing ever competing in sport.

Excited for Botswana! (silver in 800) Have they won Olympic medals before? I see this is their only one this year.

This is their first ever! They also won a turd medal at these Olympics previously, in women's 400 m.

Montsho sadly only placed 4th, so it really is BOT's first Olympic medal. Meh, I can't read.

Botswana! I remember being disappointed by their turd medal so nice that this happened.

What is turd medal?? Anyway, very exciting for Botswana! Finally got a look at the decathletes today, and it's over. Lots of nice-looking guys in that event.

Turd medal = 4th, the worst placement at the Olympics.
I think I made it up but Grarliner will probably eventually take credit.

Oh. Thanks for explaining it's a Cult thing. I thought maybe it was a well-known term worldwide that only I didn't know!
There's a Molitor competing in women's javelin! I wonder if she's kin to Melanie and daughter? Though she's German, not Swiss.

I like Mr. Bolt! The Carl Lewis days were so joyless in comparison.

Montenegro has also secured their first medal in history, as their handball women reach the final. God owes me one there!

Yes, Cyprus, a silver medal in sailing.
Sailing is probably the only Olympic sport I've never seen a second of. I have literally no idea what they do there. Other that they sail.

Goooo Cyprus! I have never watched a minute of Olympic sailing, either. Nor basketball or soccer. I can't believe there's going to be golf in the next Olympics; I won't be watching a second of that, either.

I came come and was told that Latvia has a gold medal now! in BMX! I joined 'my-country-has-a-medal' Cult's club!
And apparently we won Bronze in Beach Volleyball yesterday? Damn, I'm laaate to the party.

Congrats, Lady! Even though I have no idea what BMX is! My region's big moment is coming up in an hour. A girl from Elmira, NY is running in the 5000m final. Everyone must root for her! Molly Huddle is her excellent name.

I went again last night! To the athletics. Even more amazing feeling being in the stadium. Funny to see all the events smushed up against each other, the opposite of the TV experience. I ended up sitting next to basically my dream athlete - a ridiculously hott German rower, very tall with cheekbones for days and also really nice and chatty when I asked him if he was an athlete (you could tell he wasn't just a coach). Turns out it's his fourth Olympics and he won a bronze in Sydney. This is him on the left: www.flickr.com/photos/rowing4themasses/668592997/ Basically our legs brushed up against each others' for two hours last night Anyway the other stuff: - Pole vault - this is a great spectator sport IRL, you swiftly lose track of the competition but everyone really gets into cheering the vaulters over the bar and going nuts when they succeed, which happens fairly rarely given the format - the bulk of the event is people on their 2nd and 3rd goes trying heights they can't do. As we know by now there are endless ways for pole vaulters to fail but the cruellest that I saw last night was when this one guy went over the bar and landed on the cushion with the bar still in place - he raised his arms in triumph and THEN THE BAR FELL OFF! Big screen replayed the close-up of his face morphing from elation to agony about a thousand times. - Hammer - is the opposite, because the hammer is too small to see (and we had pretty good mid-level seats). The remote-controlled mini Minis that buzzed around retrieving hammers were the CUTEST things ever though. - Women's 4x400 relay heats - fairly uneventful, #teamgb qualified hurrah, Christine Ohuruogu is awesome. Loved how the applause surged around the stadium following the runners, you felt the wave of noise coming towards you as the runners rounded the bend. - Men's 4x100 relay heats - I'm sure I was paying attention but I only realised the British team was DQed this morning. Maybe too busy booing Gatlin. Boooooooo. - Women's 5000m - SO EXCITING! Because GBR runner Julia Bleasdale is a friend of a friend, ie my closest personal connection to the Games. She came through each lap in about 4th or 5th position, I think, until the last one where all the Ethiopians and Kenyans overtook her and she finished 8th. Janie tweeted me to cheer for Molly Huddle - my loyalties were already elsewhere but Huddle didn't finish last, anyway. Was there a personal connection there Janie? Anyway Defar, the Ethiopian who won, had an awesome emotional lower-lip-trembling podium moment later, so that was great. - Women's 4x100 relay. USA world record, great to see in person, bit sad that VCB will walk away sans any kind of gold, very sad for the Trinidad & Tobago team when their second runner pulled up injured. (The anchor runner looks so confused in these situations, like she just stands there going, er, are we gonna finish guys, then just shrugs and walks off having come out here for nothing.) - Women's 1500m - I feel awful for having unknowingly cheered on a drug cheat to victory There's a big Turkish community round here so I cheered on the Turks for kinda home reasons, and Alptekin indeed won. Didn't realise she was a doper Raw emotion as one of the USA runners fell at the end of the third lap (a few metres beyond the finishing line) - dunno what was wrong with her but she stayed on the track on her knees weeping for the rest of the race. Bit awkward when everyone else finished and she was still there - Men's 4x400 relay - OMG such an exciting race! The way the Bahamian anchor overtook the USian one, I was screaming myself hoarse cheering for him to overtake and then he DID! Gold for Bahamas! In my excitement I completely forgot to pay attention to GBR getting the turd medal by a tenth of a second, whoops

What fun! That stadium looks so huge!! No wonder you couldn't see the hammer! I'm mad I turned off the tv before the exciting men's 4x400.
No, I have no personal connection to Molly Huddle; she's just a local hero up here (not from my Bitter Cold Tiny Town, of course, but from the nearby Big City of Elmira, NY). My sister who lived up here for over 30 years used to follow Molly's career in the local news ever since she was a high school track star, but her own kids never raced against her since NY schools don't compete against Pa. schools. But there were at least 3 articles in the paper yesterday about Molly; she's a very big deal up here, maybe second only to the Watkins Glen NASCAR race in sports. Apparently she even holds the US record in the 5000m. I was so glad she didn't come in last!

If you think tennis shrieks are awful, try watching taekwondo. You'd think Azza and Shazza were playing somewhere in the background.

Ha, no thanks! I am also not going to watch any race-walking! Just hoping I'll remember to turn on the men's high diving final this afternoon. Even though it makes me queasy just seeing them standing, especially on their hands, so high up there.
