Is there a team epee event the SK girl can try for? I know there is team foil...

But how are we supposed to feel sympathy for her without first watching a human interest piece about how her dad had to sell kimchee for 20 years off the roadside in Busan to buy her first sword? #NBClogic

The Korean fencer is now getting all the press and the headlines. Even here in Slovenia where people know NOTHING about fencing. The Ukraine's gold winner is barely mentioned.

If you all find the pictures heartbreaking, imagine how raw and disturbing it was watching it unfold live She's getting headlines here too even though fencing is an obscure sport that no one understands. I'm glad about that, anyway. The more I read the more it seems clear she was actually wronged. Also, a few details seem to be confused...she didn't stage a sit-in protest as a few outlets are reporting, the weird archaic rules of fencing required that she remain on the piste for the duration of the long-winded appeal (which itself required a cash deposit to be found?!).

Also, I was so impressed with how Shin picked herself up and contested the bronze play-off so well having been an emotional wreck minutes earlier - the commentators couldn't believe she could come out so soon. From my perspective of knowing nothing about sport, it looked like she jumped out to an early lead through pure desperation, but her opponent was just more level-headed and composed to last the whole match.

Sorry but I don't really give a damn, neither about the medal nor about the poor South Korean. The whole affair is caused by some of the dumbest rules in all of sports. Anyone who decides to compete under this nonsense should know what he/she might be in for.

NOOOOOOOOO Afanasyeva
Why must 75% of sporting events I watch culminate in Russian women crying!
She was SO GREAT until the VERY LAST MOVE

SLOperstar Urska Zolnir in the Judo final. Won all 4 matches with ippon. Went on to beat a Golden Flower in the final and became Slovenia's first female Gold winner at the Olympics ever. Now we're leading the always entertaining Balkan medal race ahead of Ednaland, I think.

One of my friends is a Slovenian producer who used to be a national judo champion - she was going mad about Urska on Twitter today

Actually you might know her name Boreas? She was a TV presenter and actress when she lived in Slovenia too, no idea how well known but her name is Maya Medvesek.

Was wondering where has she been hiding all those years since being part of an ensemble cast in one of the most popular TV series in SLO - "Vrtickarji"(rougly translated as "allotment holders"). She played a hot, quirky redhead there. Has completely disappeared since then. I wanted to post a photo of hers here, just to make sure it's her, but maybe not. She's not really a public person anymore. Had no idea she used to compete in judo, though.

Or maybe she is a public person. "Maya" Medvesek comes up with far more photos than "Maja". So yeah, bottom line, I remember watching her in a TV series from about 10 years ago, maybe even more.

Why must 75% of sporting events I watch culminate in Russian women crying! The crying didn't make much sense really, they weren't beating the Americans even with the perfect floor routines. I desperately wanted the Romanians to medal, and they did! Catalina Ponor is possibly my favourite athlete in these Olympics and she was sublime on beam today. Now, repeat that in the individual finals.

In borrowing glory from foreign athletes news, we got a lot of coverage of Missy Franklin yesterday, usually starting wit the statement that she is a Canadian citizen as well. Today in Haaretz I got to read a whole bunch of articles about Jewish star Aly Raisman leading the Americans to gold in the gymnastics.

I think you're safe, not sure they've ever won an Olympic medal.

No, it would be nice actually if they won a medal. They had a judoka from Kosovo who had an outside chance of medalling and I kinda cheered for her a bit, but she failed. It would be nice to win more medals than Croatia. And I don't want Montenegrin women's handball team to medal because they stole our players.

Men in judo are the hottest species of the Olympics. The bathrobe spoils all the fun, though. This is completely correct. But it wasn't unknown for me having dated a judoka previously. ;D But the sport is otherwise unwatchable though. I'm watching a Russian-Serbian judoka in action against a Cuban and what the hell, it reminds me of when I used to fight with my sister when we were little kids.

Internecine Balkan rivalries And intense jealousy of Edna for that casually dropped dating titbit. GBR finally got our first gold medal in the rowing

So far away from the heart of the whole Balkan fun I don't even know what country is supposed to dislike the other. With us it's easy, the one that borders is the one we dislike. All the rest we're fine with. You should still comfortably win the Ex-Yugo medal count with Djokovic and doubles, team sports, etc.

Judo is fun when the competitors actually try to win by using throwing or floor techniques. Our gold winner won 3 of her matches with armlock one with ippon and the final with Waz-ari. Unlike some French judoka who got to the bronze medal with one win by DQ and 3 wins by judges' decision when there was a tie at 0-0.

Judo is one of the hardest sports to know what's going on if you're unfamiliar with it. Four badminton pairs DQed for tanking/attempting to tank their QFs So...what happens to the badminton draw now? Both SFs walkovers? Who gets bronze? Play-off between losing QFists? I really can't imagine this situation happening in tennis...

I really can't imagine this situation happening in tennis... It is a bizarre case because with everyone tanking, you might end up with the opponent you tried to avoid anyway. Apparently, in the match where both teams tried to lose, they both ended up in the half opposite to the other Chinese team, which lost against the Danes!?!? When the teams from the same group end up in the same half, what's the point of tanking? What a mess. Some sports have really ridiculous rules. That's the advantage of high-profile sports like tennis - they are more professional and have more public attention so stupid rule changes are pretty quickly abandoned. The obscure sports lack the experience to do it properly lol.
