Well that was quick. JaJa's shots have hardly any potency these days. And when even Roby Vinci can clobber returns off your serving, you have big problems. The bh dtl is consistent and can have good depth but isn't hit as hard as before and the other groundstrokes are often fluffed up because she's out of position due to inadequate footwork or reduced footspeed. Ma$ha served well.

Masha hasn't rolled over and died

And then, the third set happened. Still a good effort from Masha. She can only gain from this match, having managed a set this time.

Until 4-6, 2-3, I kept thinking, why are all the usual trigger points for a comeback coming and...going? And then, that one came and never stopped coming. Always fun to watch Ma$ha humiliated, and winning a set actually made it even better - Serena plays at a lackadaisical 20% for half the match and Ma$ha still can't win.

That reminded me of Lindsay's rollover routine at the AO back in '05.

Did Masha collapse, got shown up, or both?

Serena went into beatdown mode.
Did you guys see the stats for her win over A-Rad? 40 winners/21 UEs. We are very lucky she didn't win Australia.

Anyway, congrats to Serena for winning her hometown tournament, with extra kudos for taking out the Face of the WTA. At least Ma$ha can take comfort in the fact that, humiliating bagel notwithstanding, she is still top dog on the WTA site home page.

But it is better than 0 and 1, 4 and 3, 1 and 3, 3 and 1, 1 and 1, 1 and 2, and all the other smackdowns Serena has handed out over the years. At least she knows that there is some sort of combination of celestial events under which she can win a set of tennis from Serena.

I turned to the final on TV hoping basketball was on and screamed.

She eventually scored a win in Doha. (See: Chris & Martina below) I don't think so. I'd love to see a list of all the players who have won a set from Serena and not gained a danged thing from it. Fair point. Look at Martina and Chris. Martina won 13 straight at one point, completing destroying Chris on many occasions. But Chris kept getting closer ('84 US Open final) and eventually she scored a win again. This is most certainly better than 6-0, 6-1.

I'm more interested in whether Aga will ever get a win over Serena than if Ma$ha will ever do it again.

I'd like her to. I would put money on Aga beating her before Maria does, actually.
I think that Maria's serve is as good as I've seen it in some time. Now that she's more confident with it, she has at least some chance against Serena.

Not confident enough. Was it one or two crucial DFs that she committed in the game that ended up being the tipping point?

I feel like Maria will choke like a dog if she comes very close to beating Serena. But then I "knew" she would never win RG, so probably she'll beat her every time from now on. It's an ominous sign that reporters and Serena herself are proclaiming MS's massively improved movement. It's one thing for fawning MS fan Chris Evert to say those things, but when it starts to be universally commented upon, I guess it must be true this time. Can't say for myself since I only saw the last game of the final, and movement didn't really come into it by that point.
