Very fun match to watch today! Nice to reaffirm that not ALL the teenagers are Maria clones -- BB's got a much more interesting game. I thought she was the better player for the first third or so of the match, but after she lost the tiebreak, her level dropped. Justine lost concentration and blew the start of the 2nd set, but after she leveled at 2-all, she always looked the better player to me, even when TG fought back to level the match again. Nice to see Justine starting to have more moments like the old days, getting herself out of tough spots. Seems the fight and the determination is intact, and that is great to see.

Janie!!! I agree that Bare butt is more interesting than most teens. She kind of reminds me of hingis, very accurate shots, deep with good placement and if you notice she doesnt really try to do too much with any shot - its quite natural. She also anticipates well like hingis did. But I dont see her breaking into being a major contender for slams or for the top 5 b/c she just doesnt any big weapons - her serve is a major liability too.
I'm so happy for Juju! Back in a Tier 1 final in her 2nd tourney! And whats great is she is playing at like 70% of her best and still pulling through these tough matches. Thats a great sign!
I'm sad that Wacky Patty lost to Dementia! But a good week for her.

AWWWWWW!!! What a great pic! Tough, though riveting, match to watch, but the rhythm of the match was very similar to most "post-viral JHH" matches: the intermittently great play, the lapses, the recoveries, the chokes -- and of course that much-loved stage, the clear-eyed "going-beyond-the-choke to clinch the win" stage. Don't know how she does it; she is really, really amazing. She is such a champion deep down in her bones. Well done, kid! Interesting JHH side note: at wtaworld, Greenout's been pointing out that JHH publicity is tending a lot more toward the positive than before, since she signed with SFX. They are making sure that good stories, like her charity award at the FCC, are getting out there, and the media is picking up on this novel angle. So MAYBE, just maybe, this year we won't see only hostile or grudging articles toward our girl; that would be a real treat!

Oh don't worry, she will be raked over the coals the next time she raises her hand. Then we will be happy again.

I noticed Jon Wertheim practically brushed off Justine's big win -- huge contrast to his reaction when his girl Saint Kim won IW in her 2nd event back -- over the years I've gotten the impression he just doesn't care for JHH despite SFX's best efforts. Too bad because I am one of those few who like Jon and his column! But we've all got our blind spots. I am bidding on a couple of JHH-signed articles in the FCC charity auction -- the auctions end pretty soon, I wish someone would outbid me! I just wanted to drive up the price! Poor Alicia Molik, there was not one bid on her autographed pic, opening bid 5 bucks! That's pretty bad.

Okay, I ended up winning the signed baseball hat. Becca, next time you see me at a tournament, wearing my Tennis Week t-shirt and a white cap with a bue star on it, check closely and you will see Justine's initials on it! Because i can't see storing it away like some holy grail; I plan to wear it and soak in Justine's champion vibes (oops, forgot, she signed the cap just as she was getting sick -- oh well!)

Justine was fun to watch this weekend...the moments when she knuckled down and did it like she used to pleased her so much. Fingers crossed she builds and builds on it to RG....I love Dementieva matches anyway, she's so full of grit and joy, and once the serve, hers is in the square is as game as most. TG is coming along, nice game, her anticipation is suberb, and a few times freaked Justine out

she is getting bubblier and chattier I know! She seems to be really excited and happy, doesn't she? I guess after what she's been through, just getting up in the morning and feeling great instead of awful must be a real thrill for her. All the rest is just gravy ... same goes for Kim, too. But it sounds like she was a little bitter about the way she and Kim were basically written off last year. And she's right. They were hardly mentioned, as if their great careers were just flukes; like they were mere place-holders during the Williams sisters' injury layoffs, completely forgetting that Justine actually beat pre-injury Serena at RG 2003 and that Venus played in AO 2004. Good for her to bring that up, and to include Kim in her sentiments. I guess I just plain like EVERYTHING about this interview!

from sport.iafrica.com:Henin-Hardenne labours in Warsaw Posted Thu, 28 Apr 2005 Justine Henin-Hardenne was tested by Venezuelan Maria Vento-Kabchi before earning a 6-3, 7-5 victory and a place in the quarterfinals of the Warsaw women's WTA tournament on Thursday. Playing in dull and uncomfortably cool conditions, the Belgian found it difficult to establish her superiority over an experienced and competent opponent, who often hit the ball deep and struck some fine cross-court angles to keep Henin-Hardenne from settling into a rhythm. Although Henin-Hardenne took a 4-1 lead in the first set, she rarely looked comfortable and struggled to find any consistency on the heavy clay surface. The Belgian had the opportunity to consolidate winning the first set when she held a point to lead 3-1 in the second, but Vento-Kabchi continued to trouble her with an aggressive baseline game. The unseeded Belgian had to wait until the 11th game and a break for 6-5 on her third break point to gain the upper hand, but Vento-Kabchi still held three break points to take the set to a tiebreak before an ace and a service winner clinched victory. "It was very tough conditions," said Henin-Hardenne. "It was very difficult to hit the ball hard and be aggressive. It was very slow and was raining just a little bit, and it's not easy to play in these conditions. I'm happy I won in two sets. "She's a very good player. I know she can be dangerous, especially in these kind of conditions because you have to be aggressive when you play her. I lost my concentration for sure in the second set, but I just kept a good attitude, I kept fighting and finally I came through with very good serves at the end of the match.

"DOUBLE SET POINT for HENIN, serving at 40-15... the Belgian hits an first delivery down the middle that is unreturned by Ivanovic for a 6-4 FIRST SET in 37 minutes! Ivanovic hit 11 winners and 20 unforced errors to Henin's six and 11!"

JHH is such a cheater, she must have thrown a second ball in the court!

"FOURTH TIME! Henin does it! BREAKING as Ivanovic nets a backhand drive down the line off a short rally... the Belgian pumps her fist as she walks to her chair, the crowd let out a groan! No the highest standard of matches on the WTA Tour this season! HENIN leads 6-5!"
"Henin hits her sixth double fault of the match for 30-30, but hits a deep unreturned first serve moments later for 40- 30 MATCH POINT... long first rally with Ivanovic in control... Henin does well to scramble back and Ivanovic hits a forehand winner that clips the tramline! Living dnagerously! DEUCE!"
"IVANOVIC WASTES HER BREAK POINT! Hitting a forehand down the line long of the baseline with Henin on her knees unable to scramble any more balls up! DEUCE!"
