Oh, you mean like this? I will happily change the title if anyone has a good suggestion.

Yes, something like that! Far be it from me to be a pedant, but it's "Monégasque".

Far be it from me to be a pedant, but it's "Monégasque". Ah! Thanks! That is the trouble with Google; you can always find listings with misspellings in them. At least you could tell what I meant! This, from after today's match, is worrisome: "Henin-Hardenne said her physical condition was improving all the time but that she was still not fully recovered.
" 'Sometimes I have my ups and downs, but I don't know if that's the pressure and stress of competition or the virus,' she said."

still fragile and prone to cycles of fatigue -- doesn't know whether to blame the illness or the sport she's in -- I don't like the sound of this at all.
I guess the good thing is that she's not trying to deny to herself that she's still not fully healthy, even after one whole year, and even after Kim's return in a blaze of glory, which must goad Justine's competitive spirit. It would be so easy to brush off any ongoing health problems, pretend that everything's great and keep forging ahead bullheadedly, and I admire that she's not falling into that trap. She's got good, careful people around her.
I almost hate to say it, but has anyone suggested to her that she might want to contact Michelle Akers? She'd be a good one to talk to.

It's amazing to see that Justine apparently served a 122 MPH bomb today , but I don't think it's great that she lost the 2nd set to Shuai Peng! But Shuai despite sounding like a Hidden Worlder, is not; she is in the top 50 now, so JHH gets a few bonus points. But I wish we could see a trend that she is starting to find her rhythm out there! Not yet, I fear.

MATCH REPORT (from Justine's web site):
13/04/2005:
Justine faced the Chinese player Peng today, after a tough first round on Monday. It was a beautiful [?] but yet again a difficult match with Justine as the winner: 6-2 4-6 6-4.
Justine started off strongly and immediately broke through Peng’s serve. She soon took a 3-1 lead. Justine’s serve went much better, and she was able to limit the direct faults. Peng came closer in the sixth game, but had to give up her own serve which costed her the set. Justine played good tennis, often came to the net and clearly served better than in her previous match.
The second set followed a similar pattern as Justine broke immediately. A rebreak from her Chinese opponent followed quickly. Both players played very well until 2-2. After that, Justine seized power and took a 4-2 lead. There was a serve percentage of 56% at that time, which was particulary good. Justine put much variation in her game and made some beautiful points. She committed 4 double faults but also hit 5 aces.
The Chinese seemed to go all out after that. She won her own serve game easily and broke for the second time through Justine’s serve. A small loss of concentration made Justine trail behind for the first time in this match. Peng took a 5-4 lead, Justine’s serve game was crucial to maintain the set. But Peng also stole the last serve game from the Belgian. A small setback on her own serve and a return which didn’t go that well, made her play the third and deceisive set.
This set was clearly very important for both players. Peng offered a lot of resistance and Justine soon fell into arrears again. The Chinese held out until 3-3. After that, the Belgian player headed for the third round. She broke once more through Peng’s serve and served for the set.
Final score: 6-2 4-6 6-4.

I think they meant to say: "There was a serve percentage of 56% at that time, which was particulary good for our Justine, who has never understood the dimensions of the serving box very well!"

It seems that versus Peng she should have won easily again but fell victim to "la crispation", after leading 6-2 4-2, and had a "terrible passage à vide" losing 5 games in a row.

what's a passage a vide? Like a trip through emptiness? Anyway she's taken the first set against Our Iveta 62. She is almost due for her crispation attack ... I await it "crisp"ly ...

Un passage à vide is that period in the match when one starts to blow. A lull? Hmm, I think it just went from 6-2 5-1 to 6-2 5-3.

Yay! Well, Justine (who had 10 aces! ) did serve for the match at 5-0 in the 2nd, apparently, so she did have a momentary passage à vide, but I think I can live with the kind that lasts only from 5-0 to 6-3. So nice to see she's getting that serve working. It would be so cool if she would out-ace #1 Lindsay tomorrow! (and win, too!) Rest up, Juju! Tell P-Y you have a headache tonight!

Slightly Strange English version match report from JHH web site ( is Besanova the English translation of Benesova??)
14/04/2005:
Justine played her fourth round match today against the Tsjech Iveta Besanova, WTA 51. The match and a ticket to the quarterfinals went to the Belgian in two sets: 6-2 6-3.
Justine started very good at the beginning of the first set. She won the first game on love. After that she kept on serving great. In the 4th game she could break through Besanova’s serve and confirmed this break by keeping her own serve (she hit an ace at 117MPH). At this time in the set, Justine already had a 4-1 lead. The 7th game was a difficult one, where Besanova had a few chances to break but Justine kept on fighting and with two aces and just one double fault, she kept her serve. The last game was just a formality to win the set with a 6-2 score.
Justine started off great in the second set where she won the first game and she immediately broke through the serve of her opponent. Her serve went very good and she played beautiful tennis. She often came to the net and played very aggressively to put the pressure on Besanova. There was no one who could stop her any more. [what, "no one"? Did anyone think of calling SHAQ?] She quickly moved ahead to a 4-0 lead. Besanova could just look and try to keep up with the Belgian’s tennis. [Insert 3 games somehow won by the "just looking" Besanova here]. A last great service game gave her a ticket to the quarterfinals. Besanova was never a match today!

ALLEZ! JUSTINE IS OOZING CONFIDENCE, FOR SURE!
regarding playing Lindsay:
"It's going to be another level, for sure," Henin-Hardenne said.
"I think it's going to be a tough mission and especially because the surface is very fast and I know that Lindsay loves to hit winners from anywhere off the court.
"I'll have to play my best tennis, and I don't know if I'm ready for this. We'll see."

Justine's site: English (or its near equivalent) not avail. yet:
Charleston: Justine en demi
15/04/2005:

kewl:
Henin-Hardenne was delighted to have progressed so far in only her second tournament since returning to the tour.
"My physical shape was a bit of a question before coming to the States, but mentally I'm feeling a little bit stronger, and physically I feel my problems are past," she said.

Which beats the hell out of a passage à vide. ;D Yes, by a mile! But she had the odd passage à vide today, too. I taped it & am halfway through watching it. Golovin should be interesting! I was surprised she beat Petrova; that was another impressive win for Bare Butt. She'll be yet another type of opponent for JHH -- she's had a heck of a lot of variety in her opponents this week, hasn't she -- and good match practice for Juju either way (or so I will tell myself if she loses!)

I didn't realize P-Y is not with Justine in Charleston. I guess he stayed home in Monaco to buy curtains and furniture for their new digs, or to go to the funeral today.

Ti-Rich's match was on tv? I am so out of touch! 1. Justine played mostly a defensive game, stationed approximately 10,000 feet (3,000 metres to you ) behind the baseline. However, since Lindsay's bombing groundstrokes hit the baseline constantly, whaddarya gonna do? 2. Her 2nd serve was sadly ineffective, especially early on. 3. Her first serve % started out terrible but improved. She did hit a few great ones. 4. She was up a break in the first set when Lindsay took a much-needed injury break. Lindsay came back playing very aggressively; Justine was effectively thrown off her game. 5. After a very tough first game, which she held on to win, Justine went up 2 breaks in the 2nd, then she slipped on a slippery line and fell down. She got up shaking her wrist a bit, and I think she was shaken a bit in general as her game went off the rails, right when it seemed like Lindsay would probably just let the set go. Despite herself, Lindsay ran off the next 2 games, then Justine gathered her composure and served it out. Observations: Justine has one huge arm and one little one. She looked really happy to still be in the tournament. She did not wear a black armband or even a sad expression on her face for the monarch of her land whose funeral was today. Pam commented that Justine was looking over at Carlos constantly, even more than she used to do. She felt that Justine needs Carlos' support more than ever in her fragile comeback state.

Important: Justine said she's been recovering well after her matches. This is exactly what was NOT happening all last year for her ... crossing my fingers it keeps on going this way ... eventually, the goal would be that she feels better after a long match or tournament than before it.
