Ah, those were the days! Someone revived an old thread on wtaworld's Russian Roulette forum. Posters were asked to name their top 10 favorite Russians, in order. Here is my post from Sept. 22, 2002: "Well it's not cast in stone, but at this very moment .... 1- Elena Bovina 2 - Anastasia Myskina 3 - Lina Krasnoroutskaya 4 - Nadya Petrova 5- Vera Douchevina 6 - Vera Zvonareva 7- Sveta Kuznetsova 8 - Elena Likhotseva 9 - Elena Dementieva 10- Maria Kirilenko, Maria Sharapova, Anna Bastrikova tied"My list would be different now, but at least EB had ONE big fan in 2002!

Elena does not like bandwagon fans.

Well in 2002 there was no bandwagon. And there is no bandwagon now, so I guess she's happy. But I will never, ever forget that EB was the one to break the Russian title-less curse. And that was amazing.

Aww, heck, I guess I'll root for her again, then. Remind me I said so, in case I forget. Let's aim for EB @ the YECs in 2006. I can't imagine trying to concentrate long enough to think of 10 favorite Russians now, though. ED >Sveta > EL would be 1 2 3, then I draw a blank. So I will give EB that 4th spot; why not? Go Giant Barbie!

Time to revive the non-sulking thread for the True Queen of Russian tennis! Watch her slash her way through 50K qualies this week!

But can she halt the thunderous return of the Sesilator?
Doubt it.

No, probably not. Not at this point, anyway; she's not serving well enough right now. Give her a couple months.
And Sesil has been moving WAY into the court to return serve -- I hope that won't rattle our giant. She should try to get Sesil up to the net; a wtaworld poster who attended yesterday's matches said Sesil's volleys were awful.
Again she gets the 10AM match! I hope Sesil hates getting up in the morning.

16 64 57 Oh well. That was a lot better of a battle than I expected. Hope she doesn't pull out of the Redding 25K qualies next week.

Ouch! I just learned she was up 5-3 in the 3rd. Oh, well. She was also down 0-2 in the 3rd, and fought back to 5-3. That sounds slightly better.

Tough loss for Elena. I hope she has the desire to keep going on in her comeback. If it has to be expensive to be a tennis player even on the challenger circuit. I hope Elena has some money put away because her road back to the WTA Tour could be an expensive one.

Elena has made millions, and her family was well off before that. She's fine.

$1,812,449 in oncourt winnings, to be exact. And that's not counting this week's haul! ;D

Elena has made millions, and her family was well off before that. She's fine. Thanks for the info. I forgot that Elena has money and was from money. If that's the case then that means she's making a comeback because she misses and loves tennis and not because of the money.

Hope she doesn't pull out of the Redding 25K qualies next week. Sorry, I made a mistake. Redding is not next week; it's the week after that. Elena has signed up for that and for the Hammond, La. 25K the week after.

Elena IS Russian. It's always about the money.
Let's hope Elena gets a better draw in the 25k qualies (and plays them, of course...)

The only potentially dangerous one in Elena's section of the Redding q draw is Chan. I'd love to see her finish off eternally-hopeless Tiya in 40 minutes or less; that would be a great start to the week. PLEASE qualify, Elena!
Chin-Wei Chan TPE (3) v. Erika Clarke-Magana MEX Tadeja Majeric SLO v. Anna Fitzpatrick GBR (9) Yurika Sema JPN (4) v. Kim-Anh Nguyen USA (WC) Tiya Rolle USA (WC) v. Elena Bovina RUS (10)

Erika Clarke got married? If I recall from Alx, she's the really chubby Mexicana.
Elena needs a long run, or to win one of these challengers. Get that ranking up. She's not fit enough to play a lot of matches.

It's tough in 25Ks. You've got to qualify just to get 1 ranking point. So then you play MD round 1, and that's already your 4th match -- that's okay for the likes of Pandzic, but it's tough for girls who get out of shape, or who aren't super-motivated. On the other hand, if Elena needs to expend a lot of energy beating the likes of the Lesser Rolle and Yurika Sema, then she's got worse problems than I want to think about. She really has to roll through those 2 matches and save her energy to make her charge. She's also signed up for Hammond and Pelham the following 2 weeks. If she really shows up for all 3 of these, we'll have to throw a big party for her. But if she misses one because she's tired from winning the previous one, that'd be okay, too.

There's only 2 quali matches here, but still. And she won't win them easily. If she couldn't beat Gibbs easily, she'll go 3 with Sema just to be snotty.

(10)Elena Bovina (RUS) d. (wc)Tiya Rolle (USA) 76[8] 63 Oh, Elena! Oh, well. I'm disappointed she had to work that hard to take care of Tiya, but at least she got through in 2 sets. I was mistaken about Yurika; I looked her up and she's better than I realized. OTOH, she didn't play great yesterday, either, barely squeaking by Nguyen in a 3rd set tb. Given EB's current form, I'd have to say this next match is a toss-up.

Bleh... the poor scores this year, and hideous loss to Alexis Gordon, are not promising. Even in the Ukraine tourney last year, she was still crushing these scrubs.
