The Rome draw was decimated.
Elena should have no problem with her first 2 matches. Final quali match vs. Nogueira or the Romanian girl could be tough. But, she's still the favorite.

Rome T-a-V qr1:
(3)Elena Bovina (RUS) def (wc)Carolina Orsi (ITA) 6-1 6-2
Good start. Orsi was a perfect opponent for Elena: she's a junior; she's unranked in the pros, playing in just her 4th pro tournament and first one above the 10K Qualy level. She has won one 10K qualy match. But she's a lefty, which makes it a little bit interesting.
I bet she was pretty excited to get those 3 games.

She qualified, winning every match easily. Plays Jovanovic today. We need the wins. Once San Diego comes off, we're back in the depths of the rankings if we don't do something now.

Bovina def. Jovanovic 26 64 76 Good thing her qualy matches were easy so she had the energy to battle this one out. Nice to see her come out on top of one of these nailbiters.

Yay. Although I thought she'd beat Ana easier.
Alla next. Tough one.

This just in from a wtaworld poster; can't confirm it, but I really hope it's correct: EB def AK 26 64 61

It is correct.
Elena plays WC Gabba Dabba Doo in the next round. She defeated Mirjana and Camerin.

Gabba beat MEC? Wow, that's going to be a tough one for Lena, then. Especially since she'll be playing her 5th match in 6 days, and coming off two 3-setters in a row. Her shoulder must be pretty good for her to get through all this.

Well, she was lucky to get that far.
She probably won't have to qualify in Marseille.

Well the qualy draw is out and she's not in it. Bad news is that the player who was listed one spot above her on the Q entry list, good old Alexandra Panova, is the top Q seed, so Elena should have been seeded #2. I don't know how Elena could have leapfrogged over AP and made the MD, but I hope she did it somehow. She's not in Barcelona qualies, either.

Elena did get a WC to the MD. She plays Selima Sfar in the 1R. Memories of when they played every week in Elena's early challenger days. Elena Bovina. Add Oil.

Elena moves up 30 spots to #275 with her QF in Rome.
A couple more good results, and maybe she can get into USO qualies.

The Giant One apparently forgot to add oil. Selima Sfar (TUN) d. (wc)Elena Bovina (RUS) 63 62

Selima has been playing well, but ouch.
I don't know how much longer Elena will keep playing with results like this.

Just to twist the knife, Selima went on to lose in r2.

Is Lena still hurt, or something? She's too good to be struggling like she is. She needs to pick things up this summer, or her ranking is going to tank in August.

I watched her in February, and I'm baffled.
Her serve is weaker, and she doesn't extend similarly to Demented's former bad habit. Her footwork was poor, but I assumed rust. But, it's not like either were ever a strength.
Her groundies are still there, so I'd figure she'd be able to just overpower the scrubs...

Is she still a twig? And by twig I mean Sydney 2004, not her usual waif-like self.
I disagree with you regarding the serve, but I guess we always have on this. I thought when she used it correctly it could be a weapon for her. I wouldn't be concerned with her footwork, except for when coming forward. I think coming into net more could help her game.
I saw her play in San Diego last year. I just recall her being sloppy. But really, I don't understand why she's not established herself back in the top 100 yet...

She looks like she always did. Not twig-like.
Elena only has one effective serve, the slice on both sides, and it's still easily readable.
Net play isn't a percentage play any longer in tennis, unless you have a huge weapon to come in off of. Which is only the backhand, and the weird angles she can hit, neither great for approaching, especially with her 2-hand BH volleys.
I don't know, but time's running out. The Coco win drops from the entry lists by late September. And then it will be really tough for her to rise up the rankings.

Her 3rd quali match was rained out until tomorrow, against Ivanova. So, lots of tennis if we keep winning.

Elena is in the MD, so I assume she beat Ivanova. I can't read Italian, and don't want to go to MinorityWorld during this fortnight of mourning.
She plays Maret Ani in the 1R. This is the type of opponent she should overpower...
