Safarova and Szavay are way bigger upsets than Dinara, though, rankings be damned.
Crazily, Bachmann's bid to defeat both Rodionovas remains alive, as she has clawed back to 4-5.

Kiefer out. He's half French anyway which is unacceptable of course. Petkovic's knee is kaputt, it seems.

Now 40-0 on Angelika's serve for her to level at 5.
Bartoli looks down and out, serving trailing 2-5.

Yup. Bachmann from 0-5 to 4-5 40-0 and loses 4-6. What a cunt.

lol, Rodionova fought back and closed out the match right there, 7-6 6-4.
Bartoli gone to Arvidsson, 6-7 6-4 6-3. Good.
Srebotnik finally subdues LDL 4-6 6-0 9-7.

Seems Peter Luczak is on the way to earning another round-one win for the Aussies. Luczak ... is that a Queenslander name?

Lucie down 1 & 4 to Castano... geez.
Assuming she does nothing in Paris, too... she'll be back in the 50 range. Ugh.

It's been like that all day with the shitty Aussies on the Show Courts.
Missed a lot of good matches because of it.

CAKE You won't get to the top 5 like this. Lucie with a side order of Terrible loss for Szavay. Let's pretend Australia never happened, before this turns into a proper sophomore slump. Domachowska's always been talented, I've been on her bandwagon since her Challenger days. Thrashing Johansson may not mean much but now CAKE has left the building, she probably has a shot at Arvidsson next. Oh, I remember the stupid Misa fans at the World. I'm so glad she lost.

Even more glad that Sirianni and Guccione are out - boo to locals.
How in the world does Berlocq still have direct entry to Slams??

Berlocq dominates the clay challengers, and gets the occasional good result at like Umag.
Every draw I've ever followed, the poor guy loses 1st round.

LOL. Again, Ljubicic fails to deliver at a Slam. Hopefully Blake, that other optional events whore, will follow him out!

I am going to try to actually fit all my thoughts into one post next time but this is because I've just woken up. Kleybanova - I'd heard she was v talented but apparently comes from a loaded family so wasn't exactly brimming over with motivation, work ethic and so on. She had very impressive Challenger results last year, though, so her Tour breakthrough isn't such a surprise; I don't expect Peng to do much of anything this year, didn't Michael Chang dump her in the off season because she was too lazy?

OK, looking at the draw - Cornet, if she can get by Hanturexia, has a shot at least at the 4R, and I suspect further (unconvinced by Chakvetadze this season). The flipside of that, is that if Ice Cream CAN'T beat Hant...no. I don't want to think about Daniela Hantuchova in a Slam QF again

I don't know why Chang dumped her. Lazy or not, she has an impressive collection of elite scalps, especially for someone who has never been ranked higher than #31. Last year may have gone much better for her if she hadn't sprained her ankle deep in a third set against Jankovic in Berlin, costing her the rest of the clay season, including Paris. All that said, she's not made much of the promise she showed in 2005 and I think time is running thin for her to make her move. But we'll see. Today's loss does not help. VRP d. Vinci 4 and 4. VRP is a former QFist here!

Thrashing Johansson may not mean much but now CAKE has left the building, she probably has a shot at Arvidsson next. Is that the next match for Doma? Well that will be a heated rematch of their Memphis final a couple years ago. I remember following live scores for that one and being really bummed... and then both of them really sucked afterwards. I don't think Marta has ever won a title, so that was a blown opportunity. Now one of them will be in a 3rd round! Just want to say that I watched the first set of Youzhny from yesterday and he won a point with a between-the-legger. Was wonderful. I wanted to stay up for Venus/Yan but I'm too tired so I'll set my tape and go to bed. I've been impressed with ESPN coverage tonight... you know, relatively.

I watched that Memphis final! The last time I got to see both of them. I love both of them, and want Marta/Sofia GS finals now. Did anyone ever say what happened to Marta?

Although if she plays Chakvetadze, she'll definitely lose. I'm not the biggest fan of Daniela or her game, but I do think it would be sad if her last GS QF ever was in 2003. Especially since she made a great comeback last year.

Out of the heat is pretty good for both of them.
I'm not sure if anything specific happened to Marta - just yr common or garden sophomore slump, maybe a minor injury or two mixed in there. She REALLY sucked for a while. I suspect the emergence of Radwanska didn't help her state of mind.

She really did suck, but to me she doesn't have Top 20 potential anyway. At best she could be a Top 30-40 player for the rest of her career, but more likely she'll go through lots of ups and downs.
Screw it, I have enough energy to stay up for Venus.
Question: Can you guys swallow pills? I've never been able to, like at all. And I have to take an antibiotic that says, "Do not chew or crush. Swallow whole." Guess what, I just chewed it. Other types of swallowing, I've got done, but pills are my nemesis.

Wow, Vince fighting back against Stepanek from 6-2, 6-2, 5-2 down! In a 4th. Think Nicole is there?
Mary Joe said they are definitely dating but the marriage license thing was a prank she played on her friends.

Too bad he gets Baghdatis and not Johansson. As a side note, I am SO over Safin as a top player. Go away, away, away. Marcos will probably beat him, but if ever Marat had a shot, it would be in Australia, methinks.

Linetskaya plays for Israel now? Yep. Truly, this is the season of defections from Eastern Europe: Gajdosova from SVK to AUS, Rodionova Sr (but I don't think Rodionova Jr) from RUS to AUS, Linetskaya from RUS to ISR. I thought this sort of thing was only meant to happen in the Cold War era. I am fine with all manner of pills; my mother had a thing for vitamin pills when I was little, I had no choice about it. Safin, Safin, Safin...you used to be my favourite player. I couldn't care less, these days. I'm not sure who my favourites are any more - Henin, probably, on the women's side (the first time ever that my fave hasn't been an insane mental choking headcase). Djokovic on the men's?

So Pee bt Zee. Yan did well though; as well as one would expect against Vee. Venus-Mirza looks great in R3. Unless Pin or Bascinzky mess that up.
