Ben Rothenberg @benrothenberg
Remember this name: Croatian Ana Konjuh (who I suspect @bgtennisnation will dub Anaconda) becomes first 14-year old to win Eddie Herr 18s.

1 and 1 over Haas Croatia could be a serious force in women's tennis in a few years' time, with Konjuh and Vekic rising...

I need for them to hurry up and get better and make women's tennis fun again. All the better if one of them is the pampered daughter of a famous sportsman and the other, an angry daughter of a postman.

By the way I saw a picture from this week of Townsend, who just turned pro. And she is, well let's just say, by all appearances, very unfit. REALLY bad. I guess Patrick McEnroe's efforts haven't helped.

Yeah, I saw some too. I don't think anyone disputed that she's awfully unfit. On the other hand, as soon as she got to play some pro events this autumn, she started putting up good results immediately. Plenty of pros started off as unfit teenagers.
But then, she's losing to 14-year-olds in the juniors...

New SRB on the rise? Laslo DJERE (SRB) [10] 6-7(2) 6-2 6-1 That name looks very Hungarian. Maybe we'll have a male Monica Seles. Didn't he win the whole thing in the end?

Konjuh won the whole thing First girl to win Eddie Herr and the Orange Bowl in the same year since, er, Lauren Davis. The only other 14-year-olds to win the Orange Bowl are, er, Larcher de Brito and Vaidisova. I realise that none of those comparisons are very promising

Yeah, Djere did win! Not a bad comeback for the kid after choking in Eddie Herr. But poor Konjuh, fated to be the next MLDB or Vaidisova, oh no! Maybe if she stays away from training in the US she can survive better. Still exciting to have these kids to root for in the coming year.

But why cheering for someone who's already winning all the time... I refuse to do so and I shall be cheering for Aldila Sutjiadi and Lukas Mugevicius.

She's not winning all the time in the pros, though! It's always fun to see a junior imperiously sweep the Hidden World aside. Once they're in the top 100 I can decide whether I'm supporting them for real or not.
Meanwhile, this happened:
During Townsend's doubles final in which she and partner Gabrielle Faith downed the Mexican tandem of Marcela Zacarias and Victoria Rodriguez, 6-4, 7-5 to wrap up her junior career with her sixth elite doubles title of the year, a rude fan loudly heckled the stocky teen about her weight.
Townsend's mother, Shelia, was infuriated and confronted the elderly man before asking tournament director Lew Brewer to step in. Brewer spoke to the fan and had a volunteer monitor the situation.
"Nobody is going to disrespect my daughter like that,'' Shelia Townsend said.
What a twat that fan is.

It's unfortunate, but something players have to get used to. People are dicks, and that's what happens when you go in the public eye.

Sure. I just don't get the mindset of a grown man who'd attend an obscure junior tournament and heckle a teenage girl for being fat.

Horrible!!
I think the screaming rules start now for young kids who turn pro, but it's based on decibels. Hard to tell from the clip if it would make the cut or not.
