I love these 100Ks. You hope there's an exciting up and coming youngster having a breakthrough week, and then you see that the final was Pauline Parmentier def. Patricia Mayr.

Yes, that's how it almost always happens. Someone new has stepped up in Waterloo, though: QFs:(5)Sharon Fichman (CAN) d. (1)Alison Riske (USA) 63 75 Petra Rampre (SLO) d. (6)Chanel Simmonds (RSA) 60 76(6) (7)Chichi Scholl (USA) d. (wc)Carol Zhao (CAN) 60 63 Julia Boserup (USA) d. (2)Tetiana Luzhanska (UKR) 63 60 SFs:(5)Sharon Fichman (CAN) d. Petra Rampre (SLO) 64 62 Julia Boserup (USA) d. (7)Chichi Scholl (USA) 26 64 63 I guess it was too much to expect Rampre and Hercog to both title in the same week; SLO might explode from the excitement!

I did get to see Petra's match. First time watching her, and she's got great touch at the net, very reliable on smashes, even those she had to hit while standing on the baseline. Big time struggling on that one-handed backhand where Sharon's moonballs proved somehow effective. Petra didn't have enough power to hit through Sharon's defensive play. Sharon was waiting for the errors which came in a landslide from Petra this time. I counted 2 winners for Sharon in the first set and none in the second - she was being a perfect retriever yesterday and even when she got a chance to be agressive she poulled out another moonball to even the point. And as much as I loved watching Sharon in FED-cup doubles match, she disappointed me yesterday. Very obnoxious screaming and overall attitude resembled someone aged 12 or 13. For some unknown reason Sharon was screaming AJDE on the points she won

I've been reading reports of Fichman being an obnoxious, bratty retriever for years now.
Just the idea of a Parmentier/Mayr final is enough to cure insomnia.
Stephanie Vogt, our beloved LIE who once seemed a sure prospect before injury, seems to be on the way back. Made the final in a German 25K. Losing to Molinero in that final isn't a good sign, though.

BAG's ajde sounds a discrete bird song compared to that mix of growling and high-pitched ajdes from Sharon ;D Molinero's sidekick in Europe Maria Irigoyen on the other hand has been struggling lately and fell down towards 300s

LOL. In the QF of the Bucharest 100K this morning, Cadantu blew two MPs against Simo_ona...the second with...wait for it... a DF off an underarm serve Meanwhile it was good to see Halep finally finding an appropriate competitive level for her game in the Hidden World. Also, apparently Ling Zhang (HKG) is being coached by Yayuk Basuki? She just had a good win over Pweeg in the Lexington 50K, hoping she can consolidate her top 200 ranking at least. Elsewhere in that 50K, Oudin lost in the 1R to Chanel Simmonds Second Challenger 1R loss of the year for Whodin

Poor Melanie! I don't feel the glee that most do about her travails. I hate to see these young kids who started out well later floundering so badly. It was only fun for me when it was Pornikova.

I see that the suddenly rampant ChiChi Scholl won the Lexington $50K.
Batchy young Putintseva won a $25K in Turkey, in the final defeating Domachowska, 7-6(6) 6-2.
S.Gronert won a $25K in Wrexham.
Globetrotter Gail Brodsky was in Spain last week, and won the $25K in La Coruna.

An Uzbeki 25K ended like this: (5)Ayu-Fani Damayanti (INA) d. (6)Su-Wei Hsieh (TPE) 63 64 More astonishing to me is that AFD was also the one to eliminate the top seed, France's great hope Caroline Garcia, in the SFs. In straight sets! In a Brazil 25, the victor was Paraguay's great hope, Veronica Cepede Royg. And IRO has found her level, winning a German 25. Top seed Iryna Bremond was the champion (over Coin in the final) in a Spanish 25. Stepping up to the next level, in CZE, Italian(??) qualifier Nastassja Burnett won a 50K. And best of all, Big Akgul reached the final of a 100K in KAZ. (Diatchenko won it.) (Thanks, Alex )

Inside scoop on the origins of Burnett, from an Italian poster at TF: "Nastassja's father is italian while her mother is from Poland with british origins. "However Nasty was born and live in Rome and she is 100% italian!"Still don't see how she gets the name Burnett -- do Italian kids use their mother's surname instead of the father's? Anyway, she's a 1992 kid, so, not an amazing youngster emerging early from the juniors to save the WTA.

No mention of Akgul's run to the Kazakh 100K final?! Probably too late to save her ranking completely over the next few months, but those points were much, much needed.
I find these defensive "she's 100% [Italian/German/British/etc]!!!!" proclamations on kids with immigrant surnames to be thoroughly depressing.

In Portugal, nearly everyone with foreign ancestry will take the chance to use a foreign surname as it sounds fancier.

No mention of Akgul's run to the Kazakh 100K final? A terrible oversight on my part! Was copying results from TF and didn't see this one, and forgot I'd been following on Twitter. But, yes, Akgul finally had a good week after dealing with injuries for much of the year. I hope she can continue her fine run of years ended in the top 100 -- amazingly, this would be her 5th in a row.

Ugh - Robson, Keothavong and Zhang were the three I'd hoped could really hoover up some points this week, and look where they all are. Wozniak had better not be the one to emerge from that, though really she'd be the one I'd bet on.
Maybe Doi can break the top 100 this week? Hopefully Shvedova gets back on track too otherwise it's doubles specialist time for her.

Janie, thanks for the news from Elise. I suspect she will be no match for Gronert, though. I'm not sure what was up with Elise -- she retired from a match in April, then retired in her first match back two months later. So it's nice to see her not only win a match but go three sets without retiring or getting bagelled.
