Maybe they just don't want to soil their mouths by speaking barbaric languages.

Janie, I'm not really knocking Cabrera. I like everything about him exoect his inability to speak english and his flicking cigarette butts on mutli million dollar golf courses. I have no idea who he is but that makes me like him. Vamos Cabrera!

Janie, I'm not really knocking Cabrera. I like everything about him except his inability to speak english and his flicking cigarette butts on mutli million dollar golf courses. But at Cabrera's age and having played so many tournaments over the years in english speaking countries he should know how to speak some english by now. Vladamir Guerrero of the Angles still can't speak english after living and playing baseball in North America for over a decade. I mean please, it's ridiculous. First of all, Cabrera has played mostly in Europe. Second, it's very hard for a lot of people to learn a second language as an adult, even when they want to. Not everybody picks up languages easily. Third, I'm sure Cabrera CAN speak *some* English, as well as some bits of many other languages, but not enough to manage in the situations he suddenly and unexpectedly found himself in on Sunday. And I noticed you didn't mention how many languages YOU are fluent in; I can't wait to learn the answer. And I don't mean languages in which you can say "yes, no, thank you"; I mean that you're fluent enough to answer the rapid questions of an interviewer when you're almost out of your mind with elation. Well, cat?

Well, cat? I'm not fluent in any other languages. But I would be If I lived and worked regularly in another country the way athletes do. I would learn to speak the language within a year. Cabrera's inability to speak englsih doesn't taint his major win at this years U.S. Open. But most Argentine tennis players 10 or more years younger than Cabrera speak good english. David Nalbandian is a perfect example of this. It's not a big deal that Cabrera isn't somewhat fluent in english. I just found it a bit odd since he's been around for so long. On a more important note, Tiger Woods wife Elin gave birth to daughter Sam Alexis yesterday. Congratulations to them.

Okay, so if you played an international sport like golf, you'd become fluent in all the languages of all the countries you played in. If you played on the European tour like Cabrera has been doing, you'd become fluent in every European language the Tour goes through? Riiiiiiiiight ....

All these problems would be avoided if everyone spoke Latin. Weirdoes and the more rakish types would be allowed to speak Greek, but that would be it.

All these problems would be avoided if everyone spoke Latin. Weirdoes and the more rakish types would be allowed to speak Greek, but that would be it. Great idea. Too bad the only Latin I know is "Carpe Diem". And this bit from the old Latin Mass which somehow stuck fast in my otherwise leaky memory sieve: "Dominus vobiscum." "Et cum spiritu tuo." I even remember the tune for those lines! If you can call 2 notes a tune. But that wouldn't get me too far in a Latin-speaking world, probably.

Angel Cabrera got a hero's welcome home to Argentina as he rode down the street in a converitble holding the 2007 U.S. Open championship trophy aloft for all to see. I saw a clip of this on television this morning. It was a nice moment.

Hardly any USians really believe that there are French-speaking cities in North America, Brinyi. I think it's regarded as some kind of quaint Canadian myth.

US Open women's edition is shaping up to be a good one! Right now, there are 4 players tied for the lead: Pressel, Kerr, Ochoa, and Angela Park. I'm rooting for Lorena to win her first major today .... These players are still wrapping up their 3rd rounds. Creamer is about 8 strokes back, which is fine with me, and Gulbis is currently tied with Sorenstam, 10 strokes back.

Cristie Kerr won. Yay. Janie probably doesn't like her because she turned into a Barbie. Nothing will beat Cristie's first win, though. With the glass dildo trophy.

I don't mind the golf Barbies, though I admit Kerr and Gulbis sometimes look like the same person to me. I was definitely rooting for Ochoa, because I love her, but it was great to see Kerr stay strong through the end like that. But I felt bad for Ochoa and Pressl, coming up short. And when will Annika get back into things?

Eww, Gulbis, no. She defines boring Barbie girl. They do look alike, though... but Cristie is still hotter. At 30. I wanted Lorena to finally win a big tournament, but I'm also very pleased with Cristie winning. I love how she changed from a sorta pudgy uber-bitch to what she is now.
I assume Annika is still struggling with the neck injury she had. Also, it always seems like she's yapping about what she's doing outside of golf these days... not that I blame her, she has nothing left to prove.

ha, yeah Gulbis seems like a real bubble-head, but I don't dislike her, I think because she really does love playing golf, and works hard on improving her game. Her Dad has pushed her into doing the calendars and whatnot, and she's very willing, but she's way more excited about working on her game than she is on being golf's Queen Barbie. And she's very friendly and natural with the gallery, not snooty like Creamer (so says my brother who's seen them both play in person a couple times). But her golf game just isn't up to snuff. But I didn't know Kerr used to be pudgy! Now I'm extra glad she won.

The Open starts tomorrow. Eldrick probably isn't winning due to his knee injury, so you haters can have your ephereal potlatch.
And Annika is retiring this year. That was a depressing week where she and Justine hung 'em up. At least Annika is finishing the year out, though.

But we have Ochoa to root for, and she's a small person with a huge game just like Justine, so I'm okay with Annika leaving. Am glad she'll play all year, though; I hope she can snag some good titles still and remind people how dominant she was.
I wish Ernie Els would win this US Open. But unfortunately I believe Tiger can win, knee or no knee.

But, they're all small in the women's game except for Laura Davies, and a couple of the hoss Swedes. And once they hit 35, they all get extremely large behinds.
Lorena is big compared to all the Asian girls starting to rise now.

Luke Donald and Camilo are still kinda in it, but that's all.
Adam Scott predictably blowing early at the 24123423th major in a row. Next comes the pointless good round to finish like 5th, and further boost his ranking like he's Tommy Muster.

Luke Donald and Camilo are still kinda in it, but that's all. LUKE I also think you're right about Villegas. One of the Latinos has a hell of a body. Adam Scott buys his points at the supermarket! Appleby is still winning. He is hot in a weather-beaten way. And his wife is dead. I want him to win. And this Oliver Wilson character? Me likey. English golfers are so hot! English everything else, not so much.

I hate the way everyone (okay, my brother) is constantly trying to get my hopes up by completely dismissing Tiger's chances in some major for this reason or that. Who gives a shit if Tiger has surgery, loses a leg, an arm, his wife and child, all his golf clubs, and his eyesight, he'd still win. And yet people act so surprised time after time, year after year -- OMG, HOW DID HE DO THAT?? ASTONISHINGLY, HE OVERCAME THE ODDS; I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!! These people are fans, but not believers, while I am a hater but a (glum) believer -- YES, YOU IDIOTS, TIGER CAN INDEED MANAGE TO WIN!! ... end of rant. for now.
