I'm pretty sure Pova just lost it there for a minute. She almost always maintains that dignified exterior, but today for whatever reason, probably due to the pressure of her sad record against SW rather than Serena's inane comments about her BF, she just snapped, and revealed that she's full of the same junior high school spite as the rest of 'em.
What if Serena had outed a relationship Pova was quietly indulging in, can you imagine? Remember, Serena has never admitted she's in a romantic relationship with PM, and if he's still not divorced, she's kept it quiet for a good reason. Pova blurting it out to the assembled media reminds me of Kobe saying to the cops after being charged with rape, "I should have just paid the girl to keep quiet, like Shaq always does." Oops.

I haven't been to TF for years basically, but visited to read the comments after Serena's interview. The way most Serena fans defended and agreed with Serena on everything made sure I won't come back there for a while. It's like that with the fans of all the top players. Only the Serena fans still bring Henin into every conversation, though. But, yeah, reading GM over there is like walking around a high school cafeteria and sitting down at the different tables of mean teens endlessly and repetitively badmouthing the teens at the other tables. You could really go nuts if you tried to make sense of what passes for their thought processes. I love TF for the challenger and junior forums, and especially for Meelis who posts all the ITF draws. But GM is and always has been insane.

I thought those comments couldn't have been about Sharapova because that interview was done months ago when Masha wasn't saying anything about being in a relationship (it may not have even existed then).
GM's the same it's always been. It's like a reality show out there, people blow up over perceived slights in ambiguous comments if they come from players they don't like and then defend abhorrent things when it's their favourite doing them. To be fair, I'd be more of a dick too if my favourite player was that successful and crazy.

Thanks to Ali, and the fact that none of it makes sense, I'm starting to believe that the "lives/sleeps/breathes tennis" person and the "starts every interview with how much in love she is/cool kids parties" person might be two different people, and the latter might not even be a tennis player or athlete.

If Serena has an IQ above 80 (hmmmm) she could make Ma$ha look stupid and totally make up some BS (or even tell the truth) by either denying the whole thing or saying it was definitely not about her. Or something. “As for myself, or whether [the comment] was about somebody else, nothing personal..." Masha attacked her whether the comment was for her or anyone else - she didn't think it was Serena's business to comment on someone else' personal life (although we all know it was about Maria). Also, I agree with Lady. Can someone beat both of these women (along with Azza & Radwanska)? Thanks.

Sadly, but typically, many articles connected the two separate comments into one long quote, so it's understandable that a lot of us got that bit wrong. So yeah, thanks for clarifying that, Ali. Do you guys agree about the heavy irony in Ma$ha saying that she "didn't think it was Serena's business to comment on someone else' personal life" -- and then going on to make the most excruciatingly personal and scathing revelation/dig about Serena's relationship? That's the part where I think she just lost it and let her usually-hidden bitterness poured out. And probably felt like a fool afterward. Count me in on Lady's "hope they both get beaten" bandwagon But let's face it; a lot of us, maybe everyone here except Ali, have been riding on that hopeless bandwagon for years.

I loathe the entire Top 4 - I prefer the useless ones like Na and Kvitova, sadly. Masha is the least of all evils from that group of four, but now that she has 4 Slams she must be stopped. We can't allow her to be Hingis' equal, hence rooting for Serena to add more Slams. But Serena's mentally ill, so it's quite a quandry.

There was the possibility that Serena was talking about Azza/Redfoo.
But I agree, unlikely as it seemed I don't think Ma$ha would have reacted this strongly - and with the dig about Mouratoglou being married with kids - if she didn't know it was about her. Weird, I always assumed Serena/Grisha was a coupling that only existed in TFers' imaginations.
Gotta roll my eyes at THIS being the story though, this is just standard issue high school drama. Neither are wrong or right. Serena still needs to be dragged hard by the media and the fans for her rape comments (and non-apology). Lady is right, her fans ardently defending her on that was depressing.
Interestingly, some of the harshest criticism of Serena on that subject that I've read has come from the African-American media. A lot of "we were rooting for you, how could you say that" going around. She's lost a lot of fans.

No doubt she continued to blame false reporting for her published statement, but whatever she said, they're fine with her now. So I think a lot of the fans who were upset with her callousness will be back, too. "The tennis star, in England preparing for Wimbledon, spoke to the victim, her mother and a family lawyer for about 30 minutes Wednesday, the lawyer said."For her TF fans to defend her original comments is insane, but par for the course at TF. In my opinion, almost all elite athletes are selfish jerks, isolated from the real world to an unreal extent. Even most of the ones I root for, I can't stand.

Ben Rothenberg @benrothenberg 16m Serena says she talked to Maria at the player party Thursday to apologize. Not clear that apology was accepted, though.
Ben Rothenberg @benrothenberg 21m "I definitely like to keep my personal life personal." Serena declining to comment on Sharapova's comments. #Wimbledon
Ben Rothenberg @benrothenberg 15m Serena says she's been spoiled by "professionalism" of tennis media, which she implied was missing from Rolling Stone article
Neil Harman @neilharmantimes 10m Serena would love to play Maria Sharapova in Wimbledon final. 'I think everybody would like to see that."
Beyond The Baseline @si_BTBaseline 2m Serena says she apologized to Maria at the WTA Player Party last week and that Sharapova "shouldn't have been brought into" the article.
Steve Tignor @stevetignor 3m Serena puts her best foot, face, words forward today. Says she apologized to Maria; at the time, believed apology was accepted.

She apologized because Sharapova's name was brought up, it's not confirmation she was talking about her. More ambiguity and question marks.
And apologies not accepted, I guess.

If Serena hadn't brought whathisface into it, Sharapova wouldn't have said anything. Lurve makes people dumb.
Anyway, Sharapova has the slight upper hand in here, in that she hasn't said things quite as dumb as Serena has lately. However, these are still two grown women bickering at one another through the press. Lame.

I read something about Stephanek on TF last night, but then I stopped reading it because I remembered where I was. Something about getting a divorce and now being with another WTA player? AMAZING. It's like theses people all knew that my TV shows had ended and that I'd dearly need this.

tennis.si.com/2013/06/23/serena-says-she-apologized-to-sharapova-steubenville-victim/?sct=tn_t2_a3“I made it a point to reach out to Maria, as well, because she was inadvertently brought into the situation by assumptions made by the reporter,” Williams said. “I said, ‘Look, I want to personally apologize to you if you are offended by being brought into my situation. I want to take this moment to just pour myself, be open, say I’m very sorry for this whole situation.’ “I have the most respect for Maria on and off the court. That’s another reason why, being a woman, I wanted to reach out to her and say, ‘Look, this is this, this is this, sorry.’”

So now it's devolved to the usual PR boilerplate non-apologies and casting doubts on reporters. Good thing Serena's actually listening to her publicist now.

Haha, that bit actually fits with a tweet I saw yesterday from a showbiz journalist saying that she was surprised Sharapova lashed out in the presser because she'd seen Maria and Serena in deep conversation at the player party. I'm guessing Serena rambled on and Maria was like, whatever.

Why do TF moderators think that moderating = closing threads? Such lazy moderation. Delete offensive posts and warn users, don't kill the conversation.

Verticalscope have hundreds of forums. Mods and admins work for free, and you don't need to be a programming genius to manage a vBulletin messageboard. Basically their only cost is servers, so they must make tons of cash.
