www.tennis.com/pro-game/2013/06/serena-apologized-sharapova-party-thursday/48033/#.Uc3JD_mB-uKA source in the Sharapova camp confirmed that Serena did apologize, but said she didn't recall whom she was talking about during the interview, which could have been the reason why Sharapova decided to still criticize Serena two days later. Williams added that she does tend to stand behind what she says, but added that she’s “the first person to apologize. I'm the first person to reach out to individuals and people if I feel that something may have hurt them or something may have been misconstrued.”

Serena will have to choke a linesperson to create drama now.

So, Ma$ha has hired Jimmy Connors as her new coach. Perfect match! Like the old Kobe-Phil Jackson team, finally a tennis pair I hate almost equally. Though to be honest, JC is one of the few athletes I really loathe, while I merely can't stand MS. But maybe he can teach her to scream COME ON even louder, and with more body english.

I thought it was a running gag that Jimmy was a terrible coach after the Roddick debacle. Well, whatever. It's not like her game can change much.

I'm just going to put this here... Maria Sharapova, the richest female athlete in the world, is planning the most audacious move of her career — changing her surname to Sugarpova for the two-week duration of the US Open, in honour of her line of sweets.
The 26-year-old Russian, a former world No 1, has asked about a “quickie” name-change through the Supreme Court of Florida, where she has a base, and would revert to Sharapova after the tournament. It is understood also that the striking emblem of Sugarpova candy, a pair of red lips will feature somewhere on her attire during the final grand slam of the year.

Certainly that can't be true? It's rather worrying if it is. She has been acting weird lately but this would take it to a whole new level.

If Sharapova went Amanda Bynes, or even just a quarter of the way in that direction, it would make all four of those slams worth it.

She's obviously trolling as there is no way the Supreme Court would allow a 2 week name change. She would have to apply for a name change, and then apply again for another name change.
I have to admit, it's quality trolling. Media are talking about it.

So, not happening...too difficult, she says, but I assume just a marketing ploy she never intended to follow through on. Which begs the question, did they trick a (foolish) Neil Harman into thinking she was serious, or was he in on it? The ONLY reason the story had a shred of credibility was because it came from him.

It's hilarious how the journalist uncritically reported the story, without any hint of research or skepticism.
A story like this belongs to TMZ until there is any evidence it could realistically happen.

Gosh, that could have been gross. I posted a snide comment in Shoutbox at work about De Screamo defeating Sugarpova, but it failed. Whatever.
Good marketing.

By way of background, Sharapova is constantly on the lookout for ways to sublimate her essence into product form, and last year branched into high-end glucose retail with the launch of Sugarpova – a range of sweets with names she says reflect her various personality traits. "Sporty", "Quirky", "Flirty", "Sassy" and "Chic" are expected to be joined next year by "Acquisitive".

That was my reaction, I was actually sure that it was a joke on twitter. Was it in any way serious? OMG, even if Maria never thought of going through with this, it's just embarrassing.

I still can't work out whether it was a success. I assume she never planned to actually do it because that would have been ludicrous and tacky. On the one hand, the reaction of most people, tennis fans and non-tennis fans alike, has been mockery. On the other, millions more people are aware of her nasty sweets than a week ago and in the internet age mockery dies down really quickly.

That's right. It was just a marketing ploy and it worked very well, because sports shows, etc were giving her ludicrously expensive treats free advertising by naming her brand name on their shows over and over again. Makes me puke when pretend "news" items like this get the intended result the way this little plot did, because news agencies pick it up and either take or pretend to take it seriously.
Ma$ha has become a strange person this year, though. Between the bizarre hiring/firing of Connors, the deliberately nasty remarks about Serena at Wimbledon, and now this, it's like she's entering puberty or something. It's actually kind of interesting to watch. But please lose early.

I can't believe there is a market for overpriced candies. You would think the only reason people eat that crap is because candies are generally cheap.

It's about time issues with Ma$ha started showing. She didn't have a childhood. Her dad was a super authoritarian dick. And she hates all the attention she gets.
