Sharapova Backed Sochi Bid Triumphs
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala - The Russian city of Sochi was chosen as the host for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games on Wednesday afternoon at the 2007 IOC Session in Guatemala. The decision was announced by IOC President Jacques Rogge and it will have brought a smile to the face of one of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's brightest stars. World No.2 Maria Sharapova was an ambassador for the successful bid and on a day when the 20-year-old saw her Wimbledon dreams ended for another year by Venus Williams, the decision will certainly have raised her spirits.
Reigning US Open champion, Sharapova, spent several of the early years of her life in Sochi and was understandably delighted by the outcome of the IOC members vote. "I'm very excited that Sochi won the Olympic bid yesterday," Sharapova said, "it was an honor for me to be a small part of it. I can't wait for the world to meet this amazing city and I look forward to seeing it from a spectator's perspective, as I have no real talent in winter sports!"
At a news conference after the announcement was made, Rogge also gave his ringing endorsement to the decision. "Sochi presented a strong and visionary project," Rogge said, "and I have every confidence that the city will host an excellent Winter Games in 2014."
Sochi is situated on the Black Sea coast and in the voting process beat off the challenges of South Korean city Pyeongchang and the Austrian bid, Salzburg. In the final vote in Guatemala Sochi received 51 votes, just four more than closest rival Pyeongchang - Salzburg was eliminated in the first round of voting. The 2014 Games will be the first time the Winter Olympics and Paralympic have been held in Russia and the announcement prompted wild celebrations in Sochi's central square, where fireworks were let off before a jubilant crowd who partied well into the night.
Sharapova, a United Nations Goodwill ambassador, lent her support to the bid two months ago along with a plethora of other Russian sports stars, including recent Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year and Olympic Champion pole vaulter, Yelena Isinbayeva; Sochi-born Olympic gold medalist and former world number one ranked men's tennis star, Yevgeny Kafelnikov and reigning Davis Cup tennis champions, Nikolay Davydenko, Marat Safin, Dimitry Tursunov, Mikhail Youzhny and Evgeny Korolev.
Maria Sharapova. A United Nations Goodwill ambassador. At 20.

Sochi '14 sounds like fun. I will go to that after I go to South Africa '10, Vancouver '10 (maybe), and London '12. Then I will die broke.

Sharapova Pulls Out Russian star Maria Sharapova has pulled out of this weekend's Fed Cup semi-final against the USA. The world number two, who has yet to make her debut in the team competition, has a shoulder injury and has been told to rest for 10 days by doctors. Sharapova has been struggling with the problem for much of the current season and bowed out of Wimbledon at the last-16 stage last week. She told her official website: "All the scans and tests show improvement in my shoulder but I still have a tremendous amount of swelling in the area. "Since having another cortisone shot in 2007 is not an option for me, I need to monitor my shoulder at all times. "The good news is that Russia still has an amazing team and I believe they will still have a very good chance to win the match." Elena Vesnina replaces Sharapova in the squad - and further changes may be afoot. *gasp* Maria Sharapova will not play for that country with a bunch of Russian players against her home country? I am aghast.

That the Russian state would spend that type of money on the Olympics ... I just think they should have other, more urgent, priorities. Same as I do about Vancouver.

Why is Mal allowed to have random capital letters in his name. Because he's hot. Oh, and I'm reviving this thread because I heart M. Sharapova. April 16, 2008 Maria Sharapova © Nike Maria's Training Tips To most people Maria Sharapova has it all - she's one of the best talents in women's tennis with moviestar looks, a massive legion of fans and a glamorous lifestyle. But it's something that Maria doesn't have that is the focus of Nike's latest ad campaign featuring the Russian, who turns 21-years-old on Saturday. "Maria Sharapova - Training To Win Paris" is a section on the Nike Training Web site which outlines Sharapova's fitness regime as she prepares to win the only Grand Slam title she has yet to win, Roland Garros. In this unique insight into her training, Sharapova takes us through the exercises which aim to add greater strength, quickness, stamina, flexibility and versatility to her already phenomenal game. "I know that I'm not the quickest tennis player, but I do know that I compensate for that by being quick with my reactions," explains Sharapova on the Web site. "The quicker I know where to be, the quicker I'll get there."

It will be interesting to see how she handles the pressure of needing to win Roland Garros to complete the rare career grand slam.

Oh, we're back to looking like crap. Bleach blonde only works if you have good skin and a good tan, Masharka. You have neither. Sharapova reaches compromise with WTA over photo shoot By ANDREW DAMPF – 3 hours ago ROME (AP) — Maria Sharapova reached a compromise with the WTA Tour and completed a promotional photo shoot before the Italian Open began Monday. The second-ranked Russian was opposed to the shoot because she does not like distractions before tournaments, and claimed the WTA threatened to fine her more than $300,000 if she refused. Sunday's photo shoot to build publicity for the tour championships was reduced to 90 minutes from several hours, Sharapova said. "I was riding around in a car for an hour talking — pretending like I'm talking on the phone," Sharapova said. "The timing compromise was still pretty difficult since it's before a very big event for all of us. Considering the time reduction, it definitely makes that a lot easier than going into a four- or five-hour shoot with hair and makeup, which adds another hour." Sharapova launched her protest on her Web site two weeks ago, and asked for fans' opinions. "I've obviously made my point," she said. "I wanted to let my fans know that I didn't feel like people were listening to me. I think it's in the best interest of the tour." After a first-round bye, Sharapova will play either Dominika Cibulkova or Gisela Dulko at the clay-court warmup for the French Open. "When I set foot in Rome, my priority is to play tennis," Sharapova said. "I already did the talking, and now it's time to play tennis." Sharapova is playing her first tournament in Europe this year. She won a clay-court event in Amelia Island last month, then lost to Serena Williams in the quarterfinals in Charleston a week later. In August, Sharapova plans to play at the Olympics for the first time. "I'm absolutely thrilled," Sharapova said of the Beijing Games. "It's been a dream of mine since I was a very young girl, from watching it in the middle of the night on TV, and waking up and watching the opening ceremony, to following all the athletes and waiting until Russia would walk out. "It's quite hard to believe that sometimes your dreams can turn to reality. In a few months they will, so that's quite exciting." Sharapova also wants to play for Russia in the Fed Cup final against Spain in September. "If I'm healthy, I'm definitely going to be playing," she said. Sharapova won two matches to help Russia beat Israel in the quarterfinals in February, but was left off the team that beat the United States in the semifinals.

Maria put the WTA Tour in their place and I like that. Her focus during tournaments is on tennis and not photo shoots.

:barf: Sharapova To Take Over No.1 Ranking ST PETERSBURG, FL, USA – With the announcement of her immediate retirement from professional tennis, and at her request, World No.1 Justine Henin will be removed from the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Rankings. As such, the next rankings – to be released on Monday, May 19 – will see the current No.2, Russian Maria Sharapova, assume the top spot for the fourth time in her career. Henin, currently in her 117th non-consecutive week and fourth stint in the top spot, is the sixth longest reigning No.1 since the inception of computer singles rankings in November 1975. The 25-year-old announced her decision to retire at a press conference in her native Belgium on Wednesday. This coming Monday will see Sharapova commence her 15th career week at No.1, having first ascended to the top ranking on August 22, 2005. After a one-week spell at No.1 she regained the position two weeks later from Lindsay Davenport, where she remained for six weeks. Sharapova was also No.1 for seven weeks from January to March 2007. After an injury-plagued latter half of 2007, Sharapova made a major resurgence at last November's Sony Ericsson Championships in Madrid, Spain, where she made it all the way to the final before narrowly losing to Henin, 57 75 63. That form has continued into 2008, so far compiling an impressive 24-2 win-loss record, winning her third career Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open, defeating No.1 Henin 64 60 in the quarterfinals, No.4 Jelena Jankovic 63 61 in the semifinals and No.3 Ana Ivanovic 75 63 in the final. She has also won titles at the Tier I Qatar Total Open in Doha and Tier II Bausch & Lomb Championships in Amelia Island, FL. Sharapova, 21, is the first Russian and one of only 16 women to have held the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour World No.1 Singles Ranking, as is shown below: PLAYER (total weeks at No.1 and first date at No.1): Steffi Graf (377 weeks : 17 August 1987) Martina Navratilova (332 weeks : 10 July 1978) Chris Evert (260 weeks : 3 November 1975) Martina Hingis (209 weeks : 31 March 1997) Monica Seles (178 weeks : 11 March 1991) Justine Henin (117 weeks : 20 October 2003) Lindsay Davenport (98 weeks : 12 October 1998) Serena Williams (57 weeks : 8 July 2002) Amélie Mauresmo (39 weeks : 13 September 2004) Tracy Austin (21 weeks : 7 April 1980) Kim Clijsters (19 weeks : 11 August 2003) Jennifer Capriati (17 weeks : 15 October 2001) Maria Sharapova (15 weeks* : 22 August 2005) Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario (12 weeks : 6 February 1995) Venus Williams (11 weeks : 25 February 2002) Evonne Goolagong (2 weeks : 26 April 1976)

Amazing how her skin looks so much better from the same press conference. I didn't know atptour.com hired photoshop specialists. They don't. On a serious note I'm beginning to wonder if Maria has lost her zest for competition with the way she has folded in her last 3 grand slam losses. I think the more this happens the less chance Maria has of recovering from it and becoming an elite tennis champion again. Sharapova may already be past her peak in tennis as a tennis player and as a competitor.

Yeah, she looks quite nice there. An outfit that doesn't make her shoulders look as broad is possible is a rare find on her. She should try more of them.
That is to say, she often fails epically in the quest to dress for her figure, but has succeeded here.
But... what's with the gaudy ring? Ew.

Like Becca says, Nike did some incredible work hiding her shoulders.

In other fluff news, Maria Sharapova (in Lanvin) unveils the new Canon PowerShot Diamond Collection at Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport on Wednesday in New York City. At the event, Maria unveiled five diamond-studded Canon PowerShot SD 1100 IS Digital ELPH cameras, with an estimated value of about $12,000 each. On Thursday, August 21, you can visit the Canon Center Court at South Street Seaport, NYC, where you can pose with Maria Sharapova for pictures. I actually like the dress, including the 80s sleeve bit.
