So Venus has w/d.
Our combatants, then, are:
Justine HENIN (BEL) Svetlana KUZNETSOVA (RUS) Jelena JANKOVIC (SRB) Ana IVANOVIC (SRB) Serena WILLIAMS (USA) Anna CHAKVETADZE (RUS) Maria SHARAPOVA (RUS) Daniela HANTUCHOVA (ICK)
Alternate: Marion BARTOLI (CAK)

Half the field are coming into this having lost their last opening round! And that isn't even including Chakvetadze! Car crash tournament awaits.

Bartoli is going to win somehow.

Most likely scenario is Maria playing the first match, sucking horribly and only then withdrawing to be replaced by an alternate.
All the injured or spent players will be in Ivanovic's group, all the in-form ones in Jankovic's group.
Did you all loathe Bartoli this much before she beat Juju at Wimbledon? Anyway, it wouldn't be much worse than Schnyder making it to the YEC back in 2005. Marion at least has been to a Slam final.

It's because Bartoli is so not a top player in every way, yet she's ranked as one because of that one shitty tournament in July that fucks everything up. And I hate the current WTA, and feast on whenever it gets embarrassed.
Patty wasn't that bad in '05... she had many runs in Tier 1 & 2's.
Whereas if Bartoli would have lost to someone good in the 4R/QF at Wimbly, she'd be ranked like 18th now, and nobody would care.
We'll have more fun with Bartoli, though... she's defending basically nothing until Wimbly. A few good results, and she could sneak in the top 5. Lolz.

I hate RR. Bring back the 16 p. draw in New York! I see the 2008 Champs will be in doha. How long until either dubai or doha get a fifth slam in March?

I love Marion, too. She's been a lot better post-Wimbledon, relative to what she was pre-Wimbledon, which I didn't expect. Maybe it's just friendly seeding, but she almost never made Tier I/II QFs/SFs, and now she does regularly. Occasionally. Whatever. If she does make it in she has about as good a shot as anyone else, given form. Better, probably. Most of the field are struggling to win games these days

Patty wasn't that bad in '05... she had many runs in Tier 1 & 2's. Patty played a Jankovician schedule in 2005. She did excellenty on the big clay tournaments, but what got her to the YEC was her relentless hogging at the depleted fall indoor season tournaments (cheap wins over the likes of Ivanovic or Pennetta)

True, but indoor whoring is a part of making it every year.
Marion supposedly had nagging injuries early this year, so it's hard to tell how much she really improved. She does have a couple good wins post-Wimbly, I'll give her that. But, she's playing like the ~20 ranked player she is...

But, she's playing like the ~20 ranked player she is... Marion is playing a higher % game now (kind of a fat Bammer, as I've said before), relying more on consistency and less on flashy shotmaking. I believe that, with time, she'll become less upset prone and possibly a legit #10-15 player, but spectacular wins like those at Wimbledon may become less likely as well.

I had assumed this was going to be televised here in the US, but as of now, it doesn't look like it will be. On the other hand, maybe I'll take the week off from Justine-induced nervous terror ... no matter how successful she is, I don't think her longtime fans ever get over the fright of watching her play!

Gee, Serena + JH in one group, and Shriekerbot in the opposite group -- where have I heard THAT before? That Cruel Corporate Clone Shriekapova's "cakewalk draws" tend to work in favour of Ivanovic, and this one will be no exception - that Subhuman Piece of Scum Shriekerbitch will lose her first match and w/d, to be replaced by Marion. Hilarity ensues.

Lolz @ the groups. Why am I not surprised.
Although, it actually works out for Justine in the end... just beat struggling Chak and Jelena who is absolutely hopeless against her. Then, probably Sweta or Ana in the SF, which is easy, ugly win.

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Serena Williams looked at her draw for the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships and was pleased to see top-ranked Justine Henin in her difficult group. Williams has lost three straight matches against Henin since she beat the Belgian star to win the Miami Masters title in April. Henin knocked Williams out of the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open at the quarterfinal stage every time. "I was happy to see that I was in her half, because I feel like it would be fun to play her again and she's the No. 1 player, so it'd be cool," Williams said Sunday. Williams, the only American player in the field, Henin, No. 3 Jelena Jankovic and Russia's Anna Chakvetadze are in the tough yellow group. The top two after round-robin play advance to Saturday's semifinals at the $3 million season-ending tournament. "Everyone out on that list hits pretty hard," the 26-year-old Williams said. "I guess I have to hold it down for USA." The last time she played in the event featuring the season's top eight singles players was in 2004, when she fell to Maria Sharapova in the final. Sharapova became the second player -- after Williams -- to win the event in her debut. Williams, the 2001 winner, is back in the championships after jumping from 140 in the WTA rankings to her current No. 5 this season, picking up her eighth Grand Slam title along the way. "I don't know if I've done well to be here. I feel like I should be here," said Williams, who won the Australian Open in January. "It's just different because I started out the year so low with a lot of people not believing 100 percent in my ability to compete, so for me it was kind of like a great victory for me to qualify." Though Williams hasn't played since retiring from the Zurich Open two weeks ago with a sore thigh, the injury shouldn't be a problem in Madrid. "I'm definitely really fit and really happy," she said. "I was on my way to glory and I ran into a little bad luck." Second-ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova leads the red group, which also features French Open finalist Ana Ivanovic, Sharapova and Daniela Hantuchova. Play begins at the Madrid Arena on Tuesday.

The feature night match is so enthralling. What was that about looks not selling women's tennis.
The OOP seems fixed in that Maria will play one match and then Bartoli begins her reign of terror towards victory. Maybe I'm just hopeful.
